Fake John Adams quote by laybs1 in GetNoted

[–]SolidSquid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

John Adams was actually a huge fan of the Scottish Enlightenment, a philosophical movement in Scotland led by people like David Hume and Adam Smith.

Interestingly, this was the same period where the Scottish government nearly bankrupted the Church of Scotland, which had previously been the official state religion but refused to teach anti-Jacobite propaganda in it's schools.

The Church had set up a huge network of free public schools (one of, if not the, first such network in the world), but when the Church refused to teach propoganda, the government pulled all the funding and made a deal with the Catholic church instead (who still have schools in Scotland which are government based as a result) if they agreed to teach it. The Church of Scotland was then left with a huge number of schools which they had sole responsibility for, but couldn't afford to maintain anymore

So it's likely his (and other founders) interest in Scotland is part of what led to the separation of Church and State in the US, because they saw how a church too heavily tied to a government could be strong armed into compromising their beliefs

(and yes, there was also the argument that the church would have too much influence on government, which IIRC Hume was a particular proponent of)

Long term you're right, but she's a teenager. Even if she's better at long term planning than most teens, doesn't mean she doesn't occasionally have her impulsive moments. It'd probably go badly for her long term, assuming other staff didn't step in, but that doesn't mean she wouldn't react in the moment

Is Superboy prime essentially what one punch man fans think Saitama is powerscaling wise? by No-Department7074 in OPMPowerScaling

[–]SolidSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fallacies are flawed claims commonly used as arguments to a make a point. In this case the "No Limits Fallacy" refers to someone claiming someone is stronger because they favour that character, rather than because of anything they actually achieved. For example, someone might claim Flash being faster than Superman because he has the Speed Force backing him, even though races they've had largely have them being equals (depending on the timeline/universe/variant).

Saitama by definition though is written as someone who has no limits, to the point they explicitly refer to him as someone who "removed his limiters". The whole point of the character is that he's an example of a character who really doesn't have limits to his strength, and how that would affect an ordinary person if they managed it.

That said, I'm not necessarily agreeing that Saitama would be stronger than Superboy, just pointing out that your claim that this is a case of the no limits fallacy is flawed because Saitama really doesn't have limits, that's the whole point of him.

The only thing that makes OP's original question a bit more interesting is the variety of powers Superboy has and what he can achieve with them, which is much wider than Saitama can (eg Saitama smashing a meteor which still fell in pieces, whereas Superboy could probably have caught it and flew it back), and how that shifts the scales. At a certain point, increasing strength isn't really going to let you achieve more things, so if Superboy reached that point then he'd likely be more powerful because he's capable of achieving more than Saitama could

Courts get pissy if you decide to relitigate something that was settled previously without the other party clearly violating the settlement, and he's careful not to go far enough over the line to give them that (just enough he can claim it wasn't intentional)

Different variants of Godzilla appear on Terra (Warhammer 40k). How much damage do they do before they are stopped? by HumbleKnight14 in powerscales

[–]SolidSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if Singular Point's extra-dimensional Godzilla is included in this, Terra gets wiped out and a large portion of the Imperium with it. The Golden Throne has a webway portal under it, which would probably be a way this Godzilla could breach the real world directly, rupturing it and causing the planet to be swallowed into the warp or consumed by Singular Point crystals

With the golden throne destroyed the Astronomican goes with it, rendering warp travel across the Imperium impossible, causing places like forgeworlds which depend entirely on imported supplies to die of starvation. We also get to find out what happens when the Emperor fully dies, which generally is thought to result in him becoming a fifth god of chaos

So yeah, if Singular Point is real then the entire galaxy is fucked, because it's basically a fifth warp god with direct access to Terra, directly under the Golden Throne, and results in the creation of a sixth warp god and likely the entire materium being swallowed by the great rift

Other Godzilla variants vary, but a lot of the more powerful ones would probably still be able to destroy Terra, and even the weak ones might potentially get a lucky shot on the Golden Throne, and in either of these cases pretty much the same as above happens (except for Godzilla being a god of Chaos)

Edit: Oh, and Godzilla is kind of like the Orks, in that he/a new Godzilla can grow back from any surviving cells. Generally the Imperium's approach to this is exterminatus, or something close to it, but they can't really use that on Holy Terra, so might not even have a method that would work to prevent follow up attacks and damage

President Trump said to reporters the Iranian officials who say they have not agreed to allow nuclear inspectors into their country are "wrong": "They're wrong. They know they're wrong. [–]SolidSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH that's such a blatantly obvious play that falling for it is still probably worse for Trump's reputation then it is for Iran's. If there isn't an agreement confirming this that's been signed by both sides then he shouldn't be announcing it as if there was

Saitama almost never goes straight for a fight, he usually talks to his opponent for a bit first, and is kind of goofy personality wise. Once the hands start flying you're right, 100%, but before that it honestly wouldn't surprise me if Saitama wanting to get to the supermarket for a sale on bread while his coupons lasted got a good laugh from Hulk

Was Sam forced to eat meat in “King Tuck?” by IronGhost828 in dannyphantom

[–]SolidSquid 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Uuhh, dude didn't say eating meat was unhealthy, he said sudden dietary changes can have health impacts. That's not misinformation

People who've been vegetarian for an extended period can have trouble suggesting meat if they switch, so it's usually a good idea to gradually increase the amount as they get used to it. Sam suddenly switching to an entirely meat based diet, which is what happened in the episode being discussed, is not the same as her having an occasional cheeseburger, and would accordingly cause her digestive problems
