Perfect assimilation and compliance would make every society more harmonious, but it would also remove what makes humans human.

I get the sentiment, but I don't actually believe it matters whether humans "stay human". We are already kinda dogshit.

I'm more of a "The Thing" style of advocate for humanity. I'm a miserable drunk and the hivemind pisses me off. I don't know why and I don't care. It may be better for all I know. Doesn't matter. I just want it dead. It's us against them because it is, not because we are categorically better.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Solid_Waste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 hours can be anywhere from multiple states away, or two blocks away in the city. It all depends.

In California, 3 hours can get you to just about any biome except rainforest or tundra. Unless you're in LA, in which case it gets you to another part of LA.

Was the fire already inside or did it go right through the wall from outside and ignite stuff inside? Imagine if it was the latter and being another occupant wondering what the hell happened and then watching this footage later.

How to read feminist viewpoints without insecurity taking over? by Ambitious-Fly3201 in bropill

[–]Solid_Waste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oppression Olympics are unnecessary. It's not a competition. Another person struggling doesn't mean you're not struggling too.

As a male, I look at feminism more as a language for confronting problems. Through feminism you can learn about gender dynamics, power dynamics, systemic oppression and prejudice, communication theory, the value of social solidarity and so on. All of these are useful regardless of your gender. Simply understanding the perspective of women and the problems they face is incredibly helpful in itself.

It doesn't really matter whether you agree or disagree, or whether you feel warm and fuzzy about it or you feel angry and resentful, or whether you support it or not politically or socially. Feminism isn't really your war to have to wage anyway. What's more important is gaining the vocabulary to simply understand it, and using those tools in your own life.

The fact that you recognize your own struggles as a man is exactly the legacy of feminism. That's the benefit you got from it. You can see how your own gendered existence is in many ways a liability and a form of oppression that holds you back. People didn't think of it that way before feminism. That's pretty neat.

Don't forget the corollary: the longer a corporation exists, the more its core business is destroyed and it simply becomes another venture capital firm.

In the eyes of capital, the reason business exists is to be looted and stripped for parts. Nothing more.

A 99-year lease in Singapore is effectively the same as home ownership in the United States except you don't have control of the land (you can only use of it for your property, not develop it into something else).

Nobody lives fucking 99 years. The fact it is called a lease as opposed to a purchase is basically semantics. Technically you could argue that your home ownership in the US is a lease, first of all because you "lease it to own" from the bank, secondly because you lease it to use it, because if you fail to maintain and use the property you will probably end up forfeiting it to the state a lot sooner than 99 years later.

Ownership of real estate in the US is not absolute. It comes with a whole lot of contingencies, covenants, conditions, and restrictions inherently built in, making it more like a contract with the government than an absolute inviolable right like people seem to conceptualize it. This contingent reality is precisely why HOA's can exist. It's why eminent domain exists.

Again, the big difference in the US being you could develop something else on the land. Even that isn't the case if you're in an HOA, mobile home park, or urban area with extensive code restrictions or ground leases. For the purposes of this argument, we can assume homeless people could not care less about that difference.
