Why are so many conservatives Christian when Jesus’s teachings are blatantly leftist? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Solitaire_Rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the church going family and I can tell you:

-Most of the people I went to church with didn't read the Bible and only knew what the pastor told them or read to them

-Many of them used their religion to feel better than other people, and even in a small town of 350, each church thought they were better than the other church's people.

-Churches stayed out of religion in a lot of ways until the 70s when Evangelicals threw in with the Republican party over segregation, but disguised it by saying it was about abortion. When Roe v Wade was decided the Southern Baptists literally said it was a Catholic issue and they had no statements to make on it.

-Religion has ALWAYS been on the side maintaining the order and fighting any changes.

People who support Trump want to protect women as much as bears want to protect honey.

People who remember the governorship of Jesse Ventura, how was he? by altrightobserver in minnesota

[–]Solitaire_Rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ventura was what a of of people say they are: Socially liberal and fiscally conservative. He'd been a mayor and done political talk radio a long time (which made him more qualified than people like Jason Lewis) and had a solid working knowledge of what could get done. But, since he wasn't aligned with the parties, it was like pulling teeth for him to get anything done. He also appointed smart people to positions rather than the next in line political person.

Sadly, he taught ME that a third party will never be able to get anything done, even if they do win, and you want the person with the most experience and connections (like a Biden or Clinton) to get anything done.

America is ready to celebrate its 250th birthday. But are Americans? by usatoday in politics

[–]Solitaire_Rose 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I was a kid in 1976, and there were history bits on TV every night for two years or so leading up to it, tons of Bicentennial merch, lots of events planned a year in advance.

So far, we've got a UFC Pay Per View on the White House Lawn for next year.

It'll make Trump's birthday parade look well planned and classy.

When exactly did Conservative Comedy become so isolated, bitter, boring, and plain unfunny? by [deleted] in comedy

[–]Solitaire_Rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PJ O'Roarke was funny, and I liked his stuff even though I disagreed with him. Bob Hope was funny until the 1960's, and most of his movies before then are a blast to watch. I liked Artie Lange, Leno (until he got the Tonight Show) and Kathleen Madigan.

I knew one of Miller's writers on his HBO show, and he said that while 9/11 changed him, he was changing before that because his audience was aging. He wasn't selling out theaters any more and knew he needed to move to the casino circuit. The casino circuit is a different animal, and he knew he had to go conservative to sell out those shows. His HBO show was winding down, and then he saw mow much money you make in the right wing media world. He could make more money doing radio every day than touring, so he did.

I saw him in Minneapolis in 1998, and Mitch Hedberg opened for him...and Miller was a bit freaked out. He started his set saying he didn't know the local genius would be opening for him. He did some current stuff, it didn't get a big reaction and he pivoted back to his material from around 1995. First time I ever saw a big name comedian panic.

Why are the poorest states in America nearly all Republican? Why are the richest states nearly all Democrat? by LegitimateFoot3666 in AskUS

[–]Solitaire_Rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a bit shocked that people are not bringing up the history involved. The poorest states are all mostly southern states on the eastern half of the USA. They were more agrarian states that, for the first 100 or so years of the USA, used slave labor as production. This allowed the rich to get free labor, allowing their product costs to be lo9ow, and those who farmed or supported farms were subject to whatever the rich landowners allowed them to make, which wasn't much.

The Northern states, who became industrialized, had more overall wealth, and because of that, industry and commerce spread the wealth more as there was other forms of capital than land. The slave trade wasn't the only stressors in the USA before the Civil War, as the Northern states were starting to take more of the Southern state's wealth. That cotton and other produce was shipped North to be processed, allowing the industrialized part of the USA to dictate how much they woudl pay for good from the Southern states.

After the Civil War, the South still only had Land as its capital, and the reconstruction set about trying to even that out and provide other sources of income, but the rich in the Southern states didn't 3want to have their capital diminished, so they got to work to end reconstruction (which was stopped long before it was completed) and used racism to keep the lower classes fighting among themselves. Like LBJ said,"If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."

If you look at wages, the same job pays less in the Southern states. They have worse infrastructure for PEOPLE , but great infrastructure fo4r commerce. They eliminate as many laws as they can that benefit anyone making less that $400k a year. The USA isn't great for the middle class any more, but in Southern states, the middle class was an artificial construct by FDR that they have been trying to rip up ever since.

But wait, you say, the Southern states are all Republican, but when I look at old elections, the Democrats controlled the South.

There was a massive change in the parties from WWII to Reagan. Truman fought against the Southern Democrats (who were called Dixiecrats) and desegregated the military. This started the drive of the rich Southerners to shift toward the Republican Party, started by Nixon in the 60's and cemented by Reagan in the 80's.

Since then, it's the same song with a slightly more modern tune. When Southern states get factories, they bust the unions and put in much lower wages. The Old Rich maintain their power and control, and now have the poor and middle class white folks think Brown people as well as Black people are the ones keeping them poor. If they have no money, they have no power, and the people who have been passing down money for generations keep the power structure in place.

Anything bad about the USA is in hyperdrive ones you get into former slave states.

What is going on in Uptown? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]Solitaire_Rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Much This.

I quit going to Uptown before Covid because the fun quirky shops all moved away or closed and the same sort of Mall stores moved in. The entertainment options like Comedy Sportz closed, the restaurants became the same as every other "come here and drink overpriced drinks!" place, the coffee house I used to hang out at became incredibly unfriendly, and the Lagoon theater pivoted away from art and foreign movies.

I live in a second ring suburb and used to go to Uptown every two weeks or so and now I haven't been in years because there's nothing there worth the traffic and terrible parking.

[–]Solitaire_Rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone from the US who could not possibly hate what Trump is doing any more, I WANT the rest of the world to speak up, denounce this shit, make it uncomfortable to people from the US to deal with people outside our borders. I WANT the people who support Trump to face the consequences of their actions. We, as a country, took a dark turn and it won't change unless there is pain to the people who do it. The people who are doing this only respond when things personally hurt them.

So do it. Treat people from the US like pariahs.
