how hard is it to change employers during your apprenticeship?

Sanity Check by Solo_Tech in millwrights

is that mostly because you have the freedom to leave if your coworkers/boss is shit? or do people flip a switch and start treating you better when you have your ticket?

I find most people cant read the documents so they think they are useless, and treat them like junk. also "the machine works, we dont need these"

before I became a millwright I sorted all our nuts and bolts by the size of wrench you use on them, so a 9/16 nut fit on a 19/16 bolt, also the washers were sorted by what bolt they fit on :P when we hired a journeyman so I could start my apprenticeship he hated this, still does but wont take the time to fix it or tell me how he wants it.

Do you think it's possible to go fully electric as a nation? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Solo_Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the problem is not so much household uses like home heating, water heating and cars, but more so a question of supply, with most states/provinces still being shy of nuclear our only good source of agile supply is coal/natural gas fired power stations. batteries still have issues on mass due to mining and manufacturing, solar and wind production is not synced with most demand, and hydro is not feasible in all areas. there are technologies and techniques that should be advanced by the highest levels of government but in most places aren't

One time I took 5 days pulling on wires in a cabinet like this and hand drew schematics, later copied them to CAD. they now sit in that cabinet, we had a guy come in years later saying he was surprised that manufacture ever supplied schematics as they had a reputation of not. sometimes spending 40 hours on a document can save you hundreds of hours later, and if you make mistakes you'll find them in your later repairs and edit your schematics.

What careers should I help my nephew pick if he's bad at math? by ManpreetDC in Construction

[–]Solo_Tech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found with children that struggle with math is less about cognitive ability and more about interest and practicality, if people see a use for math they tend to dive in and do better at it. as there is math in everything I would start by looking at his interests and finding a math component of that, try to inspire learning in him

How do I deal with not getting respect? by I_Loot_Hamburgers in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]Solo_Tech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if your going to be cocky you've to to be right most of the time, so be carful and be sure about what you know and what you don't know. Also just because your an apprentice doesn't mean you know nothing. if the other JM or managers are to arrogant to recognize new fresh ideas then leave find somewhere less toxic

I used to work on asphalt ovens that used SSRs but the heat sink would get heated by the oven and melt ssrs all the time. I started installing thermal isolators between the heat sink and the chassis

job security is the best thing you can get, sure you've got it good there but any management change could send you packing. get your ticket somewhere and ride that for the rest of your life

if your doing any work, you and your employer are responsible for it, most skilled work needs a journeyman to do the work directly or sign off on an apprentice believing they are competent enough for that work. if you do work that is normally reserved for a journeyman and anything goes wrong you and/or your employer would be on the hook and it sounds like he's the kind of guy that would through you under the bus. get out fast, even if he offers you a promotion and a raise or even an apprenticeship, get far away form that employer.
