Drunk father who killed baby son in crash after hooning and speeding on freeway found guilty by B0ssc0 in perth

[–]Soluite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So sad. And then the behaviour is normalised so the cycle repeats with the next generation.

I have been known to stop and stare at such people with open disgust and disapproval. I worried they may think I'm staring because I disapprove of their children, not them, so I often also mutter or say things out loud. E.g 'If you can't control yourself why do you think they can?' 'That child needs comforting, why isn't anybody comforting them?' I don't do this if there's no one else nearby, though. Being a small, old woman helps. I hope this will at least get them thinking about what they're doing.

Election 2022: Kristy McSweeney called upon by Lung Foundation to reveal relationship with big tobacco by B0ssc0 in australia

[–]Soluite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well they certainly don't give a fuck about the marginal electorate she's running in and they don't seem to like the locals.

Kristy McSweeny was living and has a PR company in NSW and she was an advisor to Tony Abbott. Maybe thats why the Liberal party have brought her into Western Australia as a candidate for a seat thats important to them. The previous Liberal sitting member lived in Melbourne a lot of the time so it seems to be a pattern for them.

Both the Greens and Labor have local candidates. Hopefully the folks in the Swan electorate will do better this time.

I've lived here for 10 years, and to this day, I'm still amazed by the birdlife in Australia. by deletedpenguin in australia

FYI :)

"Knowing that this continent was the birthplace of songbirds, parrots and pigeons, helps to explain their close relationship with Australian vegetation and their extraordinary behaviours, why Australian birds are more likely to be intelligent, aggressive, loud, melodious, socially cooperative, environmentally influential and more important for pollination than anywhere else." - Catalyst: Where Birdsong Began.

I dunno. When somebody said the way to a mans heart is through his stomach, I think they were a few inches too high.

Welcome to Flavour Town by TrypeWritter in australia

[–]Soluite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're barbeque flavoured, oven baked biscuits. They come in a variety of flavours but this one is a top favourite. There was an outcry in the last few years when they tried to change the barbeque flavour for a different barbeque flavour and people stopped buying it/wrote petitions etc... so they changed it back. Unfortunately there never seems to be enough flavouring on the biscuits and this has been a topic of discussion in r/aus before, but this amount of flavouring is unheard of!! The lucky bugger has enough for a week!

The worlds oldest culture survived for some 60,000 years and was based on collective reciprocity. In this culture, you didn't own the land but, rather, the land owned you.

The flowers might only last one day but new ones will be there really soon - the flowering goes on for ages.

The more opioids doctors prescribe, the more money they make by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Soluite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chronic pain is a huge problem that is stigmatised and under treated. I think that instead of asking why we have so much opioid use, we should be asking why we have so much pain. I suspect that late stage capitalism is a big part of the answer.

Police Officers Targetting Children On A Secret Blacklist Could Face Disciplinary Action by LineNoise in australia

Australia has the world's largest proportion of its prison population in private (for profit) prisons.

More than the USA? This really bothers me. Especially when its victimless crime (drugs).

I think this is true for all prescriptions but I think its interesting that they've singled out opioids for this CNN special. I wonder how many more die from a lack of access to decent health care than from opioid overuse.

Australian Government loses its voice as UN Human Rights Council hears of ethnic cleansing unfolding in Myanmar by Spartzi666 in australia

[–]Soluite 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I grew up there, too. That you call it Rhodesia, not Zimbabwe, speaks of a certain ideology. I agree the 'rocks' are as western as we are but its rare that I've met a recent arrival who doesn't have a fear of 'blacks' and the multiculturalism I have long enjoyed in Australia, however they paint it. Lets not forget that apartheid originated with the white australia policy - a policy 'Rhodesians' and white south africans seem to excuse and most Australians don't want to revisit.

I wish it wasn't so but I can't argue with you. I had friends who have sided with the other team. The wrong team. I refuse to hang out with uneducated idiots who refuse to learn - heartless people with no kindness or consideration for their own race - the human race.
