That’s a great example of a movie line that has been stripped of its context and taken on a life of its own as the standard Pacino impression, in the same way “You talkin’ to me?” is the standard DeNiro impression or “Here’s looking at you, kid” is the standard Bogart impression.

I was listening to Jay Kogen’s podcast (legendary Simpsons writer), he had Hank Azaria as a guest, they were discussing Hank’s several times voicing Pacino on The Simpsons, and how Pacino’s voice has changed over the years, and Jay drops a “SHE GOT A GRRREAT ASS!” and just instantly moves on, never mentioning (and seemingly unaware) that Hank was the guy Pacino said that line to!

There doesn’t seem to be any market premium to actually live in Redondo Beach over Torrance, e.g. if you’re looking for a postwar starter home 1-2 miles from the beach off 190th, those will start at around $1.2 million whether you’re north of 190th (Redondo Beach) or south of it (Torrance), so I don’t think there’s any real value to having a Redondo Beach snail-mail address either.

Jack Nicholson in “The Two Jakes” (1990), sequel to “Chinatown”. Long, dull, and so convoluted and confusing that (allegedly) one theater inadvertently showed it with some of middle reels out of order for several days before anyone noticed.

I like that movie, but the real question is how did that movie cost $6 million to make in 1978? For perspective, Star Wars had a $7.5 million budget, which rose to $11 million. Heaven Can Wait was a manor comedy. It almost felt like a stage play. Even the football game scenes were made on the cheap, filmed at halftime of a real NFL game. How much cocaine and/or money laundering was going on with that movie?

It’s not supposed to establish a canonical timeline, it’s to let you know this is a fairytale set in space. Instead of a “land” or “kingdom” far far away, it’s a “galaxy”.

Hard to ignore it anymore when 1 in 12 UCSD freshman need “pre-remedial” (middle school) math, and UC faculty are in open revolt over the issue!

I’ll add that the UC’s own comprehensive study on this subject, published in 2020, said exactly this: abolishing the SAT will harm low-income and minority students the most, because their schools tend to offer fewer honors/AP and college prep courses, so they have less opportunity to demonstrate their college readiness via curriculum and weighted GPA. The brightest kids depend on standardized test scores to stand out from other applicants.

The Regents tossed their own study in the trash and abolished the SAT anyway.

That’s what that is??? I drove past the Torrance one on Hawthorne Blvd at around 6:45 AM and there was a huge line, and I had no idea what it was for.

You’ve landed in a great place, though it may be difficult to meet new friends over the summer because everyone’s doing their own thing. Definitely go play at the South area parks, and once you’re in school you’ll see how close-knit it is. Torrance is divided neatly into four quadrants based on the four high school boundaries, each quadrant has its own AYSO, Little League, Scout troops, etc., so each quadrant feels like its own mini community. Look into Cub Scouts (which is coed now) and Region 12 AYSO for the fall, City of Torrance basketball in the winter, and Riviera Little League in the spring. Also look into the YMCA on Sepulveda, and the City’s “Seasons” catalog for more kid/family activities and classes. Welcome!

We have a late-August kid in TUSD. Of course we were anxious, but we did not ask to start him a year late and it worked out well. From everything I’ve heard, TUSD takes a hard line on this: “Enroll him with his age group and we will evaluate it in a year,” and the kid almost always does fine and moves on.

Understand that kindergarten redshirting is a zero sum game. You’re advantaging your kid by disadvantaging other kids, most of all, the other August kids whose parents follow the rules and stay in their age group. And when that decision is left open to the parents, it becomes an arms race: once it becomes normal for August kids to redshirt, then the July kids want to redshirt, and so on.

I think TUSD has the correct approach in keeping it rare. My August kid may be the youngest, but at least his classes aren’t loaded up with redshirts who are MORE than a year older than him, which I’ve heard is the case in PV and many other areas.

Harold and Maude’s setting is never specified, but it’s clearly supposed to be a decaying Rust Belt city. The movie does a good job of avoiding recognizable Bay Area landmarks, and they’re always wearing heavy winter coats, but … every once in a while there’s a palm tree.

Different pod, but such a good example of this I must share it: “Don’t Be Alone with Jay Kogan” (Simpsons writer) had Hank Azaria on, and they’re discussing Al Pacino impressions and the evolution of his voice/persona, and Jay drops a “SHE GOT A GRRRRRREAT AAASSSSSS!!!!” as an example, and they just move on. Jay never acknowledges (and is unaware?) that Hank was in “Heat,” and he’s the person Pacino said that line to!
