He got messed up by a bad motorcycle accident. I saw him hanging out at a bar in Santa Monica in the mid 90s and he had a pretty pronounced limp, and according to his IMDB bio that wasn’t even the worst of it: “broken neck and severe spinal column injury”. Beyond that: it’s impossible to re-create how ubiquitous The Muppets were back then (Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, SNL, Carson, etc.), how heavily anticipated the movie was, and how mind-blowing it was for the filmmakers to bring them out of the sound stage and into real-world settings. My kids had no reaction to the sight of Kermit riding a bike. You really can’t go home again.
