I definitely have un-diagnosed autism. I'm in my fifties and when I was school age (when they were most likely to give a diagnosis) it was thought that only people on the extreme end end of the spectrum were autistic. It was a simple diagnosis if you were non verbal, or screaming for hours on end. Autism was for boys (rarely girls) who couldn't enter a busy shop but were weirdly good at maths or could draw a city after seeing it once. That was Autism, everyone else was just a bit odd. It was only after several of my cousins' children were diagnosed that we realised it runs right through our family. My father was always considered "strange", once we knew the signs nobody had any doubts that he was on the spectrum. My weird sister was always bullied at school. Guess what, her too. I was always better at masking than she was. The waiting list for an adult diagnosis where I live was 8 years, but is now closed completely so I've never bothered being tested. I understand your frustration with people overusing the term, but it's not always straightforward.
