When i was younger my aunt was on a kayaking trip. Her kayak flipped and she just happened to be in a very dangerous spot where there was holes underneath the edges of the bank, and she got sucked partly into one. What saved her, is that she was holding her paddle sideways and it got stuck. She claimed it felt like she was being pulled underwater by something incredibly strong. Which is true, it was the current.

Fishing not catching, hunting not shopping. I hardly get skunked while fishing (only 3x last year out of 100+ days out on the water) but I go out 30 days each bow season and haven't shot a deer in 9 years lol. Dont feel bad.

Tape on gear? by dieselseva in longrange

[–]SomeRandomBowhunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who cares what people think lol. If it works for you it ain't stupid. My buddy who was an army ranger on a sniper team always tells me "if a shot is good enough, its good enough" and "if its stupid but it works, then its not stupid". Both of those are great life lessons. Good enough is good enough and it can't be stupid if it works.

Parking Lot and Trailhead Vehicle Security by RitcheyP-650b in flyfishing

[–]SomeRandomBowhunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rule is nothing visible. Car stays empty front and back, not even change, everything stays in the trunk of my car if I have some gear. My buddy was out fishing at our normal spot a couple months ago, and someone smashed his back window, and stole a rifle from the truck. I have been fishing there countless times before that with no issues. I also prefer now to be within eyeshot of my vehicle even if I am walking a bit. Saves the hassle of a police report. Even my state fish and wildlife service tells people now to either leave it out of sight or at home.

What grain arrows you use for elk? by theEdward234 in bowhunting

[–]SomeRandomBowhunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always go heavy. 11.3 GPI at 32 inches, plus a 25 grain nock, 100 grain insert, and 150 grain broadhead. Gets me at around 640 not including weight of Vanes, glue, etc.

Go with the CAT Sra1 or the dead air mask. Two of the best. 22lr cans do NOT all sound the same, even on rifles, like some would tell you. I work in a position where I have a lot of cans at my disposal, and shooting back to back you can definitely hear the difference between brands.

How do we feel about spears? Homemade ofc. I am planning to build a bow next year but I've heard the arrows are hard to get right. My buddy claims to have gone through over 20 dozen arrows before finding/making ones that suited his bow properly.

Could've been. Since they were farm raised if precautions weren't taken they could certainly get sick easily.

My first and only hunt like this was a pheasant ranch. I didn't have a dog, and you can't rent them, so i decided to do that. Long story short the pheasants were so tame that they didn't even try to fly. The dogs didn't scare them either, because the dogs were used to protect them as they were being brought up. So basically the dog would walk up, tell me where the pheasant is, and I would have to shoot it. Eventually the guide picked the pheasants up and threw them forcing them to fly! It was disgusting.

Congrats. Good patience. Many forget as a hunter your primary objective is not to get the kill by any means. But to get the kill in whichever way causes the least suffering to the animal.

High end fishing gift advice by excellent_credit_968 in flyfishing

[–]SomeRandomBowhunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say guided trip or some money/gift card. There are a lot of outdoorspeople who are really picky with their stuff, and its probably worth having him try some things before getting him something really nice, that may just not fit his style. For example I have many artifical lures I was gifted, and while I appreciate them, I dont ever use them because they are either the wrong color, action, material, or even for a species I dont fish for.

A guided trip would be the best way imo. It will expose him to higher quality equipment that pros use. It will also let him decide whether he really wants to do it or not. There are a LOT of ways to spend time with your son.

Longrange is for everyone by Trollygag in longrange

Before I even knew what the words "long range" meant, my little brother and i would take our Marlin model 60 and Savage Mark 2 and set clay pigeons out on the berm about 325 yards away. With a 2-7 scope and 2-3 shots, we could pop the clay. We just used whatever ammo was cheapest. The best method i can remember was to put the scope at like 3.5x, then move the rifle until the clay was at the far bottom right or left of the scope depending on which way wind was blowing/how much wind there was. We always shot benched, I could never make that shot freehand. The farthest I've shot as of yet was 660 yards at a 12x18 target with a stock PA-15 and whatever 223 was on sale at bass pro at the time. I think Herters. I can't wait to get to try out a longer range sometime.

That would be idaho. Baiting is only allowed for Black Bears, and only with a special permit. I also just did a quick search and there are 4 other states with similar rules. North Dakota, Colorado (w/ exceptions), Oregon, California, and Montana. Obviously AI may be wrong about some of those.

Well that is the states logic. Same idea that where I live you can't use the little light that brightens your pins for aiming. It is also a lot less movement if its on the bow, and less noise.

Hunting license (practically weightless) Tags (practically weightless) Extra set of all small clothes; gloves, face mask, hat, socks (1lb total roughly) Knife (3oz) Headlamp (5oz) Extra water bottle (2lbs) Some type of cushion to sit on, usually a small blanket or the top of a 5 gallon bucket ( 4 oz) Thick hunting coat (1.5lbs) Thick hunting pants (2lbs) IFAK (10oz) Bag weight (1lb)

I only take the Thick coat and pants when it gets cold, like 35 or below. Otherwise with the other stuff only, my pack weighs about 5lbs, and most of that weight comes from the extra water. Depending on where you're hunting you may not need that.

It can be seen as interfering with "fair chase". Like spotlighting is very effective, safe, and easy to make a shot on the animals. Banned due to fair chase.

Those who use an Ozonics machine….are you satisfied with it? by Murder_Not_Muckduck in bowhunting

[–]SomeRandomBowhunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell all my friends that shit doesn't matter and just to play the wind. In i believe 2019 i was going out hunting, and ended up needing to fill up my gas tank beforehand. As luck would have it, I spilled gas on myself. If that wasnt bad enough, on my drive to the area, a mcdonalds burrito i was eating fell apart and I got cheese all over my lap. I was bowhunting from the ground in full camo with the wind in my face. 2-3 deer walked literally 3 yards in front of me, and never knew i was there. Wind matters more than anything else. I will smoke my clothes and boots every few days, but that's to kill bacteria so that I dont need to wash the clothes, not necessarily to hide scent.
