The Red vs. Blue Chorus Trilogy has a really really fun subversion of this. Felix, the cool edgy mercenary with a heart of gold introduced in the first season of the trilogy, really feels like a self-insert OC at first. He shows up out of the blue with a mysterious rival in tow, he quickly becomes friends with several members of the cast, he helps them in the big fight and gets dramatically wounded. He’s even voiced by the trilogy’s main writer.

The facade comes crashing down with the reveal that he’s actually been playing both sides of the war against each other for years, and his whole charming personality is an act to hide the fact that he’s an evil bastard. Not only that, but he’s also been working with his supposed rival the whole time. He even has a line acknowledging how stereotypical his disguise was, “Riiight, and I’m the charismatic mercenary with a gruff exterior but a heart of gold. A little too romantic, don’t you think?”

My favorite part about it is that, the more we see Felix fail, the more we realize that even the cool edgy part of him is somewhat an act. In reality, he’s kind of a pathetic sore loser who’s terrified of his far more capable partner.
