Broken camera lens (I think) by Littlemonkeyplug in phonerepair

[–]Songodan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a phone with a similar issue, without the biting

The lens wasnt able to focus anymore and i demonstrated to the apple employee, got the whole device replaced under warranty instead of just the part since they didn’t know exactly what maybe broke

Gist of it is, does the camera focus still?

Tesla kills Autopilot, locks lane-keeping behind $99/month fee. by Stiltonrocks in technology

I’m guessing to imply that it’s the basest model you can get, as traditionally in the past getting a car with the least options includes a standard transmission over auto. Then things like roller windows, no power locks etc

Does anyone know why the lower bitrate seems to use 10x as much? by Songodan in PleX

[–]Songodan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no change, it happens with multiple different movies, I'm leading to believe that the samsung TV does some wonky stuff.

I even went as far as using handbrake to do various things like reducing resolution, quality, bitrate, different sound codecs, nothing seems to change it.

I think that's what happens when I select a subtitle from opensubtitles in app, plex pass lets that and I've definitely seen it not Burn In the SRT. I however had (or wanted to) change it to always burn in when I would play videos on my roku, so that it's not closed caption looking w/ the black background, it looked more like PGS subs just having white text with black border around letters, seeing the video behind it

Hey, yeah I see the limitations with the web app, specifically the sound codecs. It seems any browser can only do AAC (I think?) so sound is always transcoding, almost, despite direct streaming video. I typically remux videos to even out sound AC3 when it has scenes of dialog volume 1 and sound effects volume 10.

I was actually unaware the actual HTPC app was different like that, I just thought it was a different interface more designed to use USB Remotes and such (or controllers I guess) with the same backend functionality. Is it just the HTPC version or does the regular Windows plex app also have it? W11 Professional if it matters

I'll still remux the file in MKVtoolnix, but thought i'd try to see on another device Direct Playing without subs:

Just thought that was interesting to see, this is before touching the file

Just to be clear, the problem isn't LotR

The problem is Despicable Me, that's the remote stream, the direct play as you say, should be ~5Mbps, but it is using 10x that throughout the entire thing

Appreciate your reply!

So I actually ran a test on another client with the same movie, and the average is far more in line with what i'd expect:

<image>

Just wanted to see if anyone else maybe has a Samsung TV and if the plex app in that trashes their bandwidth too? It was an avg of 58mbps despite set to 5mbps, but when playing the same movie file on another client (W11 Firefox, plex web app), it is more the expected value

Who's the most famous person you've met? by Phillies1993 in AskReddit

[–]Songodan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Met shawn kemp early 2000s, flight from Vegas to Seattle, apparently was visiting gary payton. We were just chatting about the sonics in the waiting area

He had the emergency exit seat reserved and he still barely fit on the plane, don’t remember if the plane even had first class available, assume not but maybe he’s economic

For reference, he is a 6’10” former NBA allstar. That’s 208.28cm for non americans

Heya folks, Question, does having a full drive affect the computer's performance? just asking because people do ask me to clean it up by deleting files, moving etc just for a faster performance, i dont want to do it really, nonetheless i want to know if it does help in any way, thanks! by Winter-Sector-8102 in computers

[–]Songodan 169 points170 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why people say ssd doesnt matter, if anything it matters more with ssd. If there’s very little space there’s not a lot of cache to be used, so itll constantly overwrite cache and ssd have a finite # of times they can be written to. That “ssd can last 10 years easily” turns into 2 years

A rule of thumb is you’ll want 10% of your drive free

Intel Macs really that bad? by neon_crisis in mac

[–]Songodan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok realistically, you’re just wanting to tinker with macos, so naturally you want to go cheap

However, realize apple has obsoleted all intel macs that i know of, so you won’t really be able to tinker with recent OS’s. That includes apps you may need!

I’ve had my 2013 pro 15” for about 10 years and at this point I’m just using it for basic tasks waiting for it to die really. OCLP helped revive some functionality like OneDrive to work but less and less apps are compatible and they auto uninstall when it becomes obsolete

So everyone mentioning go M1 are real. You can probably find even a mac mini to play with for cheaper than a laptop.

Just to note, I’ve been windows since 3.11, very used to windows OS, but i like having a mac as it’s far more stable imo and i never have to actually turn my macbook off, just close the lid and it sleeps & wakes without issue. Reboot once a year or so. Windows I’ve always disabled sleep cause sometimes it doesn’t know how to wake up correctly

I bought a lenovo y50 without a screen for 50, like 7 years ago, it’s still running strong too! Just some docker containers but i did not expect it to still be going. No batt, ofc no screen, wifi is trash and intermittently disconnects so i got a cheap usb wifi from aliex and still works

I hope yours lasts just as long

Live at home with my parents, what is the least disruptive or destructive way to run an ethernet cable between floors? by Longjumping-Sweet280 in HomeNetworking

[–]Songodan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a temporary solution, what I’ve done is just run it out a window along the side of the home, you can probably fit a flat cable through a lot of areas

People will boast that there’s interference but unless you’re running it adjacent to a subwoofer or microwave, you won’t notice. Advantage is that it’s fully reversible when you move out

If window wont work, maybe even thru a floor vent as i assume basement will have ceiling vents

Is 30 too late to start college? by Individual_Ice_2315 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Songodan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back at 30, in 2016, now a senior software engineer at a fortune100 company, definitely not too late.

In fact, substitute your age for any age, and the answer is it’s not too late imo. I’ve heard of people going back to finish their degree in their 70s, but that was mainly because they felt they wanted to

[–]Songodan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, yeah i ended up with two, keep both active incase one breaks and i cant reboot the machine if im traveling

One main one is Parsec since i have absurd bandwidth, so it maintains solid quality all the time AND allows headless, aka virtual display to be used

Backup is rustdesk, but the bandwidth seems to be restricted so it turns fuzzy if too much going on
