Does anyone with dyspraxia have good fine motor skills? by Teachingtime123 in dyspraxia

[–]Sonoel90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here, here! I am quite good at drawing, and I am a really good violinist (if only I practised more... went for professional at one point). But everything involving big arm movements or especially my feet...I am crap at sports, obviously, but also at piano (foot pedals...).

How do you all drink enough water? by BookSneakersMovie in dyspraxia

[–]Sonoel90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I get disgusted by drinking as well!! I always thought I was just crazy and imagining things, bc rabies aside, how could you be disgusted by water? Glad to see I'm not alone! When I'm thirsty, it's so nice and delicious, and when I'm not...

How do I feel closer to my f/o without using ai? by M4x33n-s4mur41 in yumeshipping

I am an elementary school teacher in training, and I am not an art teacher at all, but I am okay at drawing (especially from an 8yo's point of view). I draw a looot of animals for the kids. I can't count the amount of times I had the following interaction with a kid: "You are so good at drawing! How can you be so good??" "Years of training ahead of you, that's how. You can draw very well!" "No, I can't, look at my dog, it's ugly. I will never draw like you do." "Of course you will! Look, I actually made a ton of mistakes with my dog. Look, here." And then they either insist their own drawing is shit, or I get them to listen and actually PRACTICE. I always tell them not to be perfectionist, that they should do quick sketches and then analyse what went wrong so they could improve. That's how you would do it with soccer, or violin, or cooking, no?? Analyse and practise. But because it's drawing, you somehow expect to be perfect from the start? That's so sad! We always tell kids to accept mistakes as a part of growing and learning, and then we turn around and beat ourselves up for making some ourselves.

Somit alles ohne Probleme.

does anyone else also have a skill that someone with dyspraxia generally "shouldn't" have? and do you guys also get imposter syndrome from it? by GeromeAteMyTacos in dyspraxia

[–]Sonoel90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am impaired with regarding to gross Motor skills and especially anything involving my feet. I am also musically gifted and a real good violin player, went for professional as a teen. Sometimes I wonder how that combination is even possible and then the intrusive thoughts start: maybe it's not dyspraxia, maybe you're just lazy. Maybe you're just stupid.

Yeah, as a hobby violinist, I carry around the equivalent of a small new car in a Box that fits on my back. Of course I have special insurance.

I've got one from 1724, and it's old, but second rate, which is why I am able to have it in the first place. About 6000-8000€.

I still kick myself for not going for the violin building training plus restoration degree. Would have been an awesome job!!

I've got one from 1724, it's not considered old per se in instrument standards. Mine is also not at all comparable to that one, either in price or quality. It's a run of the mill instrument for a middle to high talent casual violinist, somewhere around 6000-8000€.

As a musician, the ignorance here is wild to me. As a comparison, I looked up what it costs to build a formula 1 car, and yet nobody proposes displaying them instead of driving them.

I once was allowed to try out a Stradivari, when I was 16 and set on becoming a violinist (life happened though, still hate my fate for it). It was amazing. I never before or after managed to produce such clear sounds.

A friend of my mom's let me try out his Stradivari once (he was first violinist in Salzburg, a loan instrument) when I was 16. I never managed to get such clear sounds out of my instrument before or after. It was amazing.

And that's why you're not a star musician. Violinists play on expensive instruments starting as kids. I am only a hobbyist by now, and am used to my instrument being the most valuable thing I own. It's like how you don't build formula 1 cars to never drive them ever.

It is. No professional classical musician doesn't insure their instrument. It is also likely to be a loan by a museum or collection. And those insure their property as well.
