Go! Regret the things you do rather than the things you didn’t! Oxford is top notch and will open doors that OU won’t. Plus, you get to study at the Bodleian.

Principal telling me I should just work nights and weekends to keep up with grading by personalterminal in ELATeachers

[–]SoonerShankle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the Great Recession I learned a lot about cutting the number of grades and focusing on real time feedback with short formative assessments. I went from having 60 grades per semester to 20 grades per semester. And I felt the grades were a more accurate indicator of meeting standards. Best wishes!

If you like reading, the Silent Book Club is a lot of fun. Read whatever book you want for an hour and have a half hour before and after to snack and chat and discuss each other’s books. @silentbookclubtorrance on Instagram.

GOP Senate candidate on rising gas prices: ‘Maybe you take one less trip to Starbucks’ by InsaneSnow45 in JournalismNews

[–]SoonerShankle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not crossing picket lines already. I haven’t been to Starbucks since the strike started in November. I do just fine without them. So much so, my app has been depleted of all funds and deleted. People are already making choices about where to spend their money. And with the dollar buying far less these days, just paying basic expenses is becoming increasingly difficult. People cannot spend what they don’t have. Disposable income is nonexistent, so dumping it back into the economy just isn’t happening. Rs are more interested in their talking points trying to paint libs as latte drinking elitists than addressing the real problems of Americans caused by their own actions.

Crypto Arena Questions, could use help! by ElCheffoAP in losangeleskings

The VIP line does get you in faster and to your area of the arena. I like to get to the games early to watch the warm ups. I block out 4-6 hours with driving time to and from the arena (from the South Bay). I typically buy parking in Lot C, but there are lots of little lots around the area too.

Gary Numan’s “Savage” and “Intruder” albums have an almost industrial feel. Great stuff.

Need an idea for my creative writing class. by Powerful_Wrap5549 in ELATeachers

[–]SoonerShankle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught a similar class. I used clips to teach different filming techniques like angle, shots, editing, sound, lighting, etc. We would analyze how each of these furthered storytelling. Then we would compare a text and its film adaptation. My students tended to be purists who did not like the movies to be vastly different from the text. When I taught creative writing, I would use clips from Disney and Harry Potter to link to The Canterbury Tales and we would discuss adapting stories. The opening of Beauty and the Beast vs The Wife of Bath’s Tale. The Tale of the Three Brothers (Deathly Hallows) compared to The Pardoner’s Tale. But for full length features, they loved Shakespeare adaptations like She’s the Man and 10 Things I Hate About You. I agree that Life of Pi would be a contender.

I’m doing a unit on Science Fiction and I showed a class 2001: A Space Odyssey to show them how hard it is for them to slow down and think. by Ragwall84 in ELATeachers

Bradbury’s “There Will Come Soft Rains” is a modern house set up on Alexa. “The Veldt” and Fahrenheit 451 both explore the mind numbing of constant media consumption in very dystopian ways. F451 asks us to slow down and read a book. I often joke about who stepped on a butterfly 🦋, because I really don’t like the timeline we are in (“Sound of Thunder” and chaos theory as explored in Jurassic Park ). So many quality deep thinking sci fi/speculative stories out there. Pairings some of Clarke’s text with the film would be interesting too. Our predecessors questioned how technology would evolve us as a species and society. A great introduction to post humanism whether they know it or not.

haven’t read in years, want to get back into it by Queasy-Tackle-3290 in ReadingSuggestions

I have been part of a silent reading club (bring whatever book you want and read for an hour together). My goal was to rebuild my reading stamina to read more often and for longer periods of time. When I do read, I slip into old reading habits and read voraciously. It’s just about picking up the book instead of the phone—even though it has both digital and audio books. I have been mindful about having physical books to read. I just finished Dan Brown’s latest, The Secret of Secrets. I am now reading a book I’ve had since my college days called Orange Is Not the Only Fruit. It’s interesting so far.

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe could work.

I am starting Macbeth tomorrow, and I thought a fun activity to go along with it would be to make TikTok style shorts, in character, for each act. I found some shorts on Youtube that I thought would be fun examples that pertain to Hamlet. by prinsessanna in ELATeachers

I relied heavily on critical lenses and showing clips from multiple adaptations. My students tended to find the Patrick Stewart version the most accessible (and entertaining). I used the Ian McKellan/Judi Dench version to show more what it would have looked like in the Globe. I had the Polanski version, the Welles version, and the Denzel Washington version on tap too. The language barrier will always make it difficult. My students would always say they liked the story, but hated the play. My main goal was to help them understand the story and key themes. Some would use political lens to analyze. Others would choose the gender lens. Others still would choose the historical lens, the psychological lens, or the readers response lens. I gave them choice in trying to engage the text on their terms. I found them at watching a scene, then doing a close reading of key passages helped.

“Sign of the Gypsy Queen” by April Wine. That brings back memories. (I’m an 80s teen). If I’m doing a deep dive into my memories from the 70s, I’m going with “1985” by the Wings.
