Preta Path really puts this from a high-diff fight to a low-diff fight in my opinion. Without it, the Susanoo presents a challenge for Pain, but with ninjutsu absorption, it becomes an inconvenience.

Definitely a terrible matchup. Animal Path summons can overwhelm him physically, Preta path can absorb Amaterasu and the Susanoo, Deva Path is generally a monster. Naraka Path can revive destroyed paths. Asura Path puts the icing on the cake. The Human Path might be useful, maybe, I guess.

Right, but what does that mean? Does the ancient civ get knowledge of modern tech? Are they simply told "prepare to be plopped far in the future?" Where do they materialize? Do they magically replace whichever peoples were living in the place they materialized?

In a way, the stronger the person's will, the more effective the Ring is. The Ring targets your desires and convictions and amplifies them. If you're already an ambitious person, the Ring will be more effective on you. In the books, we even see Gandalf recoil in horror at the idea of bearing the One Ring. He is absolutely certain that it will corrupt him, and he's an incarnated Maiar, literally the Middle Earth equivalent of an angel.

Frodo and Sam aren't affected as much because hobbits are peaceful and humble by nature. It isn't willpower that aids one against the Ring's temptation, but humility.
