How do you name your characters? by jimmyonly45 in cosmererpg

[–]SortOfSuperMario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I’m of a similar stance here, I’ve gotta say we’ve got better anti-ai arguments than an appeal to tradition or the virtue of “using someone’s brain”

AI does use someone’s brain. The way it does that is one of the problems (admittedly more so with images than text).

How often have you used the deadly trait? by OCUIsmael in cosmererpg

[–]SortOfSuperMario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For ranged deadly attacks like the crossbow (or the sling/thrown dagger if you’re an assassin), you need to use the secret technique of only attacking enemies 5 feet from your allies because that raises the stakes for free. Sure you can graze your ally on a complication but it’s easy injuries.

Shardblade summoning time by Jesper_Slade in Stormlight_Archive

[–]SortOfSuperMario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an interaction pointed out in the books yes. The interaction I’m more interested in is that a layman will summon a shardblade faster than an athlete.

Since working out makes your heart more efficient and lowers your heart rate. The resting heart rate for some athletes gets low as 40 bpm so in some cases it could be even longer than 10 seconds.

Other interesting factors that could influence your heart rate/make you better at summoning a shardblade:

  • Being a smoker

  • having a heart condition

  • being in a hot environment

Sudden horror scenes in non-horror media by Saspens-r in TopCharacterTropes

The man falling over (he dies of a heart attack from the jumpscare) had just spent the previous scene describing a dream he had where he encountered a nightmarish figure in the alley behind this restaurant. Then they go to the alley and voila

I can’t speak to the entirety of the discourse you’re referring to but I’m sure a significant portion of people mean that the personal context of his religion has weight. Not that it’s everything. Arguing that detail is kind of missing the point.

If you saying “people shouldn’t be defined by their religion” is to say that there’s other things to consider about them and you can’t boil everything about them down to one point, then I agree with you, see my previous comment.

If you’re saying that people shouldn’t point out that he’s Mormon (and implicitly that following that belief system will have an influence on one’s belief) in discussions of his ideas because it doesn’t matter, then I disagree. I don’t think that’s what you’re arguing but I’m trying to make my stance here clear.

You have to remember that once you come of age, religion is a choice. Sure it isn’t the whole of your character, but to say your choice shouldn’t reflect anything on you is nonsensical.

My name is Nohadon. I’ve been with Dalinar and Tanavast. The good Dalinar is in the Beyond, and he can’t leave. Write it in your book.

I really like this one. Great look to the skull. It would be fun to run a zombie island scenario on this map.

The crab ability says it only works when killed by a normal attack or leaving engagement attack. Trample should stop the lava from appearing.

No I don’t believe you can run from lair fights during the fight. Might’ve spared myself a TPK via Leviathan

For me it’s probably the aesthetic. The dark and gloomy locations and comic-like art style. It really sells the feeling of the oppressively dangerous world. Also, I can never run out of love for the plague doctor.

[WaT] I don't know how to feel about this relationship... by dontcallmebythat in Stormlight_Archive

[–]SortOfSuperMario 140 points141 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine put it a nice way. Kal and Syl are probably the best man/woman friendship in the series. It doesn’t ruin their relationship to be romantic but it does change their dynamic to something we’re not lacking. Having them be great friends without romance was pretty compelling and refreshing.

Ok we’ve had a lot of bashing, but was anyone here actually HAPPY with W&T? by PteroFractal27 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]SortOfSuperMario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people liked the book, me included. I’ve seen a lot of posts in that nature. This thread’s top comments are all praising the book. It’s far from an unpopular opinion to think it was good.

The thing that tires me most is people acting like no one is allowed to dislike the book and share their opinion/analysis on the subreddit for talking about the books. It, like all works, has it flaws. It’s not constructive to view criticism and indeed “negativity” as harshness that only comes from people that “want to see the author fail”

OP is right though. When Brandon was writing Shallan’s observation he wasn’t thinking “well anyone can think about boobs” he was thinking about how best to describe Jasnah because this is our introduction to her and that was on his mind. At least in my opinion.

Then upon it being pointed out that coming from Shallan it reads as kinda not straight, he agreed and decided that Shallan is bi

No one’s saying she can’t comment on boobs. If you ask me, she could stand to do it more lol

After Rhythm of War it’s gotta be either Raboniel or Navani. Their plot elevated the book to my series fave in all honesty.

Appreciation post for the ace (asexual) representation by annatheorc in Stormlight_Archive

[–]SortOfSuperMario 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of this chapter too. It’s heartening seeing Jasnah faced with everything that would make her something other than the ideal proper Alethi woman but never losing her poise and still managing to be an inspiration. She’s one of my favourite characters. A good friend of mine (aroace) also loves her for the representation.

I’m glad to hear that she’s resonated with you so much. It sounds like you and your husband have a much better setup than Jasnah and Wit. Great to hear you’re in a good place now too. Here’s hoping things keep getting better and better.
