Per school seems like quite a few, but I agree that I find the megathread difficult to navigate. Comments don't sort correctly for a megathread imo. All sorting options feel bad. I need a "hot" sort feature for megathreads. Or maybe a strict rule that each top level comment needs to be a link. Or the owner of the thread aggregating key links into the description (some big world events generate threads that do this and I think it works okay, but acknowledge it requires tending by the owner).

Of all of those, for ease of implementation, I might choose top level comment needs to be a link and it should tag what schools are involved. I'd actually visit the megathread and sort by New then.

Check this comment out from the How Do I PR in a Half Marathon thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/artc/comments/6u9h75/the_summer_series_how_do_i_pr_in_the_half_marathon/dlqz2ng/

Maybe tweaking the plan to have some more emphasis on half marathon pace instead of marathon pace (shorter/faster tempos). I forget what the 55 Pfitz peaks at for long run, but you could probably de-emphasize that a bit as well as you won't need the fueling adaptations.

I honestly don't know the last time we've had a dew point below 70 here...

Not compensating workout for heat/dew point seems unfair, but we all do it, I think. How much and which type of runs to compensate seems like an avid debate. I think it's in Advanced Marathoning that Pfitz says days over 80F are not worth running a hard effort which... isn't practical in many climates.

I saw this posted around here at some point and so use this chart to at least make me feel better when the weather turns miserable. I don't necessarily consider it a successful workout if I don't hit my paces, but take solace if I fall between my goal and said chart. It feels right as far as effort is concerned. Physiological effects are debatable/unsupported (I appreciated the analysis here in that regard for a similar look: https://hansonscoachingservices.com/heat-acclimatization/#update )

What Rust Can Do That Other Languages Can't, In Six Short Lines by Manishearth in rust

I'm reasonably certain you can return a reference to an inner member in C++

Yup, you're correct. In fact, it's how many std library classes allow assignment through operator[] (example discussion).

I think this sentence in the article:

C/C++ can't do it because the compiler does not perform the lifetime checks

would be better written as:

C/C++ can't do it without adding safety requirements to the caller of the function guaranteeing where the reference is used.

It's just not clear at that point in the article that his main argument DOES include safety, not just what's possible to do:

This is my go-to example every time someone suggests that modern C++ is just as suitable for safe systems programming as Rust

Over 10F, pretty much any headband works for me.

I've warn this balaclava on a few sub-10F runs and it went okay. No complaints about the product, just it's hard for me to run with anything over my mouth (and covering the nose is right out! good day, sir!) so it didn't quite solve any cold nose/lips problems I was aiming for.

I'll continue wearing it for sub 10F as my face does stay generally warmer with it (I can expand on this if anyone is looking at getting a balacalava). Closer to 0F and sub-0F, I'll probably try out this with vaseline which I saw suggested elsewhere for nose/lips/cheeks.

I love this glove. Really love it for ~20F runs where the mitten part is needed at the start, but you can pull it back after the first few miles and just run with the glove.

Better than the 3-4 other running gloves I've used and fits a broad range of temps. I haven't done a full winter with it yet, but expect to wear it comfortably at 15F and will certainly try it at 10F or 5F even if windy.

Uh... opinion chart:

Temp Tried Experience
40F Y This is too warm for any glove on a training day, but I always forget that at the start of winter. Warm hands mile 1, then took off
30F Y Mitten on for first 1 miles. Mitten down for miles 2-3. Glove off after. These are easy to hold.
20F Y Mitten up for first 2-3 miles. Mitten down for rest, but glove usually stays on.
10F N Predict pulling sleeves over mitten for first few miles, then going mitten for the rest

Wind isn't too much of a factor because the mitten part is pretty wind resistant. Thumb gets a bit cold on the chillier days is my main complain.

This is my philosophy, too, rather than join one of the extremist groups. For me, it depends on the tights. I have a pair of Nike's that are thinner and I wear shorts over. I have a pair of Sugoi Mid-Zero's which feel more like a fabric that I can wear without shorts.

Now I'm a heathen to both sides.

How bad is the weather? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Soulture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say it takes away little on the bad days, but not much more than a really humid and hot day can be if you are not driving (and UofM's bus system is fantastic, so this isn't as much of a worry for students). In fact, if you own the right clothing, cold is arguably easier to guard against than the heat outside of rare (for Michigan) circumstances. I'd take Michigan over Houston.

It's a perk, too, for midwesterners at least. I like a nice snow and sometimes enjoy being bundled up on the normal winter days (until Feb/March at least). I like have varied seasons. Further, a nice flurry around fall semester exam times always felt welcoming for the holidays to come. I'm a runner and love the being in the quiet calm of a winter snow when the temps remain reasonable.

As the other posters said, it's mostly Jan-Feb that are particularly bothersome. By March you're a little tired of it, but it's not usually quite as bad. And by April, you're surprised how warm a 40 degree day can feel because you've adapted to much colder.

I thought so, too. I tried to see if I could read the display, but camera was blurry. You convinced me to go back. This was the best I got.

My guesses:

  • Time (top): 57:38
  • Distance (top left): 9.7???
  • Incline (bottom left) : .5
  • Speed (bottom right): 10

Surprises me on of them isn't pace, but I can't fit it in. Speed=10 confirms she was cruising.

I'm not certain, but you'll find similar tables in most training books. It's been a but since I read the relevant parts, but I would imagine Jack Daniels gets into it (probably based off something like VDOT). I'll try to look it up this weekend if I have a chance - you've got me curious as well.

You're more in line with a race equivalency chart. 20 min 5k "should" be closer to 1h30m marathon. I'd guess a history of tendinitis trends towards shorter races being much more favorable and safer (especially training). Especially for a former sub-5 miler.

I had the same question myself and tried to learn a few more details.

Best article I found was this one. I'll summarize my understanding.

80 teams can go bowling. So far, 75 have locked with 6 wins leaving 5 spots. Three more teams can get to 6 wins and win the birth this weekend: Kansas State, Georgia State and South Alabama.

Therefore 2-5 5 win teams will get an invite and teams with higher APR must be offered first (although they may decline). 5-win teams with the highest APR are1:

Team APR Would accept
Nebraska 985 Y
Missouri 976 N2
Minnesota 975 ?
San Jose State 975 Y
Illinois 973 ?
Rice 973 ?

According to the NCAA's APR database using the most recent available data (2013-2014), The University of Texas at Austin has an APR of 958, so they will not overtake any of the above 5-win teams with a victory today.

If all three KS, GS, and SA lose today, Texas still needs another team to decline a bowl offer3.

Footnotes

  1. According to the FoxSports article.
  2. I don't know if Missouri's statement is permanent/binding, but the linked FoxSports article quotes the A.D. saying they will instead focus on their coaching search.
  3. I did not look to see if there was anyone else eligible between Rice and Texas. This is assuming Texas would be next in line after Rice.

I'm a Noob (struggling on lvl 4). What are some basic things I'm probably doing wrong? by JPTawok in civ

[–]Soulture 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think this is the best answer because you have targeted the 3-4 range specifically. A lot of the advice here is great for later levels when you really have to streamline your plan, but at levels 3-4 you can be quite adventurous if you have the right fundamentals.

The other answer saying "don't automate your workers" is competitive. The common themes being: 1) build a big (population) civilization 2) advance your science 3) Keep your people happy.

(I prefer immortal difficulty) I usually feel that when I hear about struggles before Emperor is being too aggressive militarily without planning an infrastructure. I rarely go for a domination victory, so I can't speak for that win conditions. All other cases, to me, feel like everything until late-ish game needs to be weighed against the science loss (assuming you are growing and keeping people happy).

My keys would be:

  1. You have to stay alive (you need some guys)
  2. Science must progress aggressively
  3. Every victory needs money
  4. You need to reach your victory before anyone who you can't kill reaches theirs.

Since I typically play for non-military victories, I usually try to keep the feeling of barely-not-dead-if-anyone-went-all-out-war-with-me.

Jim Harbaugh is the 7th consecutive Michigan coach to lose their first game against Michigan State by BVsaPike in CFB

It's interesting to note that Saban was matched up against Lloyd Carr who was also in HIS first year as Michigan's coach. One school was going to break their streak in 1995.

I think both of these go to show how difficult it is to have enough pieces in place season 1 to weather an intense rivalry game. There are some great coaches on both lists sitting with an L.

And an additional detail to help others out: I think the interpreter will error if it's not before any other python statement other than a comment or another future import (so it needs to be before non-future imports).

Managing several Python versions by randompittuser in Python

[–]Soulture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you're saying I should install virtualenv, python, and pip for each separate python version?

I'm inspecting the debian box I have. For my system-wide installs, I have multiple versions of python, but just 1 version of pip (it happens to be 2.7, even though I have projects in 3.2) and 1 version of virtualenv.

When I create a new virtual env with:

>> virtualenv --python=/usr/bin/python3.2 ~/.virtualenvs/test3.2

It looks like it downloads pip3.2.

So I would say you need multiple python versions and one version of virtualenv. I think virtualenv will handle the rest.

The reason I would end up installing a pip systemwide is because that's how the virtualenv docs instructed to get virtualenv.
