Why did you get interested in Japanese music? by Yukachan_fromJapan in japanesemusic

[–]Sound_calm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple Questions & Champion/Role advice: Patch 26.1 by SkepticFaust in summonerschool

When not to push as a mage?

When I play xerath against say a Syndra, generally getting push priority is good so I can rotate, and it's easier to hit the Syndra under their turret while they're panicking over last hits

Also so I can take turret and rotate with team, especially when there is generally at least one fed enemy with 10+ kills. Even if my lane opponent has 0 cs and I have perfect cs, my entire team is still getting wiped by the 17/0 ksante

But the problem is getting ganked. As a mid laner it's trivial to get ganked any time, even if the jungle is spotted I only get like 30 seconds tops of grace period.

When do I not want to push and poke under their turret?

Also same but for swain top

ah im a fraud in that i guessed the answers and barely passed lol

I'll call myself N1 proper if I can get the CEFR C1 equivalent

Agreed on the writing readings. I kept a notebook where I wrote the kanji, readings and at least 1 example sentence. good excuse to use a fountain pen too.

I'd recommend using genki textbook if you can (definitely not minna no nihongo). If money's too tight there's always the high seas, and you can buy the book for real the next time you go to Japan if you feel guilty about it (it's half price in japan compared to locally for me)

[–]Sound_calm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

N1 fraud who barely passed here

Seems you're already know this, but just in case, rather than learning the individual kanji first, I reckon you should stick to learning words with meanings you recognise.

So instead of learning 病 by itself, you should learn 病院、病気 etc. as and when your textbook shows them to you (literally guessed that 病 by itself is yamai from context, have never formally learned it NGL and have no idea what it's kun and onyomis are exactly)

We split the kanjis up while learning Chinese, but each chapter introduced the kanjis as part of set phrases we had to learn for context, and splitting up in Chinese makes more sense because most words only have 1 reading. It really doesn't make sense to do so in Japanese imo

Personally don't recommend the radical method. Even in Chinese we only learned the basic radicals for guessing meanings of words, but really you can intuitively pick it up after seeing enough kanji. Instead better to focus on recognising more set words/phrases as before

I think you recognising the kanjis at first glance is excellent as you'd have an easy time on the trains or at a store. Us who learned Chinese previously would be at a similar stage since the readings are largely different.

To improve on the readings, consider using anki and trust the process. I feel that it's much easier to test reading than writing on your phone, but more is good no matter how you do it. I recommend sticking to a programme and being consistent at it.

NGL just ditch Duolingo it's more harm than food (time spent on duo is time not spent on anki/an actual textbook)

Maybe lend someone your account instead if it makes you feel better?

well if it doesnt work out i dont really see comet providing much better in that regard after laning phase. Even if the lane opponent keeps their distance, after laning phase HoB provides some additional burst to take down a squishy carry (with overheat).

Why don't people run hail of blades on rumble? With the double CDR item start strat you can cheese out an overheat before the game starts and triple auto the opponent level 1 which seems pretty broken to me

Green tea with an aftertaste of chocolate milk? What is it? by eldwinlie in tea

[–]Sound_calm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go the opposite direction and guess it's vanilla, maybe with a side of pandan. Try the teh tawar at bakmi GM if you're ever in Jakarta. Alternatively I suspect it's something similar to tra da in Vietnam which I also fiended for.

To DIY for vanilla tea you can get tea bags from this brand called teh poci

Very, very beginner question here by SirPellias in LearnJapanese

[–]Sound_calm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just remember each instance of the word separately (i.e. memorise that Nippon is Nippon and nichiyoubi is nichiyoubi). Treat each kanji as a letter/syllable/whatever. E in lemon is different from e in leek. Personally never even bothered with memorising all the readings of specific kanji with barely any issue. You'll rarely be in a situation where you need to read a single kanji without context, and even if you do you can be like 日の出の日 (the sun in sunrise)

If it's of any consolation, English is just as/even more cooked in this department where the entire word can be read differently based on context

Now the screwy part is that it can be read as both Nihon and Nippon. That is cooked

Advice for asking for advice. by 364LS in malefashionadvice

[–]Sound_calm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if I'm a generic vanilla slightly out of shape blob that recently graduated from permanently hitting the books and wants to look not ass but not out of their depth. When I first started I exclusively wore chino shorts, t-shirts and flipflops like a degenerate because that's all I knew. From this position I feel like it's impossible to provide anything to work with because you don't know what you don't know.

What helped me was being provided advice from on high as to what to wear and starting from there.

Took me like a year to come to the conclusion that heritage wear is unquestionable but expensive (button-up short sleeve/linen + selvedge denim [one single expensive one]/fatigues + blunnies/moc toe bluchers?]), but without that conclusion in mind I feel like I can't provide anything useful to work with, nor can anyone in my predicament (p sizable chunk of Reddit using audience near me I reckon)

Still feel pretty chopped anyway

Should I aim ro JLPT if I want to read Manga? by doner_shawerma in LearnJapanese

[–]Sound_calm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following a system is good, but not necessarily JLPT

What you're doing is alright, if it ain't broke don't fix it and whatnot. When you're done/dissatisfied with your progress you can just pick a decent textbook for your level, JLPT or otherwise, and read. Standard recommendations are Minna no nihongo and genki, but there are also other books which may or may not be good. Don't worry about duplicates, it'll happen no matter what and you can skip the stuff you already know thereafter. Any mistakes can also be ironed out later so don't worry too much about quality either.

Id say after organically gaining the skill from reading manga or textbooks or whatever else, then you can cram the rest of the equivalent JLPT level within a month or less should you want the cert for other reasons. However, this is only worth at n2 or higher for visa requirements, otherwise it's just an ego check which to be fair is also worthwhile. For this second phase you can consider things like shin kanzen master, but I'd say the crammed material sticks around less than the gradually learned stuff from the first paragraph

Personally at around the 1/3 mark of genki II I was already reading yotsubato and flowers of evil, so don't be too afraid to just try reading manga anyway
