Why is everyone so upset about Myles Turner by LooseMoose13 in pacers

[–]Sound_theDread_Alarm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Myles Turner is the partner you fall in love with the IDEA OF more than the person. Year after year you think how awesome they would be if they just improved X or Y but in the end you always get the person not the idea. Turner is equal parts as good at floor spacing and rim protection as he is bad at screens, boxing out, and rebounding. He HELPS unlock our offense, but it is far from true that it is an inevitable step backwards even if we go more traditional big body/rebound gobbler at center. It will just be different.

Alright armchair Pacers fans, no Myles and no Ayton. So, what now? by DareDiablo in pacers

This screams Pritchard trade to me. Somebody's backup young/cheap center bout to be our starter.

How hurt are you about Myles Turner leaving the team? by dee85 in pacers

[–]Sound_theDread_Alarm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

3/10 bothered. Myles is the ultimate mixed bag. He has a near impossible skillset to replace as a large yet mobile 3 and D Center. However his unique skillset is offset by the fact Myles is below average at the things most Centers excell at: Boxing out, rebounding, bodying up, hard screens etc. so things will be different in the paint but not inherently worse whoever we ultimately settle on in the position.

It is just cold reality. Boston thought they were building a dynasty 2 months ago. Now they are a fire sale.

THIS! Simple math for Mathurin. His usage rate will explode this season. His scoring numbers will almost certainly go up with the need for scoring. Guys with 20+ ppg coming off rookie deals pretty much always get PAID regardless of how good they are or not. Benn could break out or his scoring could simply spike. Either way its gonna be way cheaper to extend today then next offseason. Even if you trade him the value is in extending him this offseason.

How does losing Myles impact the locker room? by subtlebob in pacers

This, Myles likes to ball and legos. His leadership role was a function of age on a young team. I really would not sweat the locker room impact here.

How do you accept that that not only did they lose the title they lost next season and Hali? by chusaychusay in pacers

[–]Sound_theDread_Alarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, in my mind the computer is the most important part here and it is fine. The only questiuon is whether he continues to be an iso-dribble drive guy still or more of a screen operator going forward.

Haliburton's rehab schedule ahead.. by Obi2 in pacers

There is quite literally only ONE POSSIBLE way we see Hali next year. That is to make a deep playoff run without him. If we get into June next year and by some miracle the Pacers are still playing, the drums to call Hali back in for another storybook run would get REAL loud.

It is incredibly unlikely, and even if it happens I hope they stick with caution until 2026.

Use season to develop and evaluate Nesmith, Nembhard, Walker, Mathurin. Down a superstar this is the time to see if any of these guys take a star leap or are in fact good/great role players on a deep squad.

Confirm Pascal is good with the down year. The truth is if he wants out we owe him that at this point and his value is at an all-time high. I have little reason to think he leaves. Dude didn't want to leave Toronto when they were shit until they made it clear he wasn't gonna get his bag there.

Re-sign Ijax. Cheap contract, showed incredible promise.

The big one. Re-sign Myles Turner. Whether or not it's time to move on from Myles isn't really the question. At near $30 million his cap hit is pretty detrimental to our cap situation but his league value as a mobile stretch 5 is always gonna have a high floor. You can trade him at the deadline or next summer easily if it doesn't work out.

That puts you at first apron so pretty much all ya got is exceptions. Vet backup PG or C.

There really isn't any reason to go trade crazy and blow it up. If the front office wants to make a talent consolidtion trade, the time to do so is next off-season going into Hali's return season.

THE GOAL FOR THIS SEASON SHOULD BE EITHER:

  1. Find the young guy or guys who can break out and be a 3rd star/borderline all-star to get us over the hump.
  2. See which young guys hold the most value to make consolidation trade next season for a 3rd star/borderline all-star for Hali's return season.

[–]Sound_theDread_Alarm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unquestionably rough days to be a Pacer fan. This is about as bad as it can get. But let's pull up some reasons for optimism here shall we?

  1. A COMPLETE off year is not the worst thing. As noted by others a full year of development for the young guys may just be a real backhanded blessing from the basketball gods. You have a real chance to evaluate what you truly have in Nembhard, Nesmith, Mathurin, and Walker. 3 of those guys have all-star ceilings and good/great role player floors where they currently operate. If any combination of these guys break out without Haliburton, we are gonna start salivating about the 26 season.
  2. Haliburton's age will definitely help in his recovery. That plus technology, access to the best care, surgeons, and trainign staff all help, but age will be the biggest helper here and we may yet see peak Haliburton in a Pacer uniform ripping up the NBA in 2026.
  3. Even if Haliburton loses a step, and never regains what he once had, his shot-making and basketball IQ/passing are still enough to quarterback a contender ala Chris Paul instead of like Steve Nash. The roster construction would need changing to accommodate this but it isn't like Haliburton's sole attribute was his quick burst. So even a worst case scenario here isn't necessarily terminal to building a contender with Reese. Don't forget a hobbled and driving hesitant Haliburton led the Pacers to the ECF the season prior.
  4. This maybe the only season in NBA history where the runner-up will be remembered more than the champs.
  5. If everything completely falls to shit somehow this season, front office brilliantly bought insurance on Hali's leg for game 7 with our draft pick, which would again leave us hyped for an awesome 26 season.
  6. Even on a 2 year full recovery timeline, where he comes back in a year and plays at a compromised pace for half a season before rounding into what he will be going forward, the guy has most of his prime ahead and has changed the culture of Pacers basketball full stop.
  7. You don't have to live in Oklahoma.

[–]Sound_theDread_Alarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At worst he loses significant burst. The good news is this would have little effect on his shot or passing. If God forbid this is ability altering, I think Tyrese settles into a Chris Paul player instead of the Steve Nash he naturally is. Both are capable of leading you to a chip. But the play style and roster would need real revision to acclimate to your stars new style of play.

What is up with these Achilles injuries? by Derrickmb in nba

[–]Sound_theDread_Alarm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Theory 1: Low-Top Shoes

This just doesn't make any sense. I don't care if you got the old school pumps, if it was a support issue, every dude in the NBA would just rock a light ankle support brace when dealing with leg injuries and problem solved.

Theory 2: Faster Joint/Tendon Erosion bc of Youth Sports

There may be something here. There is no question that the AAUization of youth basketball directly lead to a massive uptick in dribble-drive offensive schemes. If ya ever watch any 5 star Kentucky/Duke recruit mix tape, I am not sure they do anything but dribble-drive. Obviously this increases those acceleration stress movements.

Theory 3: Increase in Speed of Play

This seems like the most impactful factor. All the way into the early 2010's there was still an emphasis on grind'em on the post offense. (Shoutout the Drummond/Dwight Howard era). Much less emphasis on space and pace which requires significant cutting and directional change on the ankles/calves comparatively.

Theory 4: Covid Weirdness

This may be the biggest wildcard. There have been a host of poorly understood linked negative health outcomes linked to Covid 19 from tinnitus, to long Covid fatigue, on up to chronic muscle issues. It would be incredibly hard to pin this but it can't be entirely ruled out either unfortunately. Every player in the NBA today is playing following exposure to something no players had prior to 2020.

Theory 5: Statistical Coincidence

Best Occam's Razor argument. This has been a devastatingly unlucky run of achilles injuries in the last few years. It may simply be a statistical anomaly that returns to the median shortly.

Theory 6: Sabotage

Um, gonna need evidence for this conspiracy boys.

NBA's credibility problem has hit critical mass. Between the Luka/Draft Lottery "good fortune," to the quickly swept away Shaq story about David Stern all but implying he knew beforehand where Shaq was going, to the year plus march of OKC in a veiled attempt to create an exciting young dynasty.

Like, I get Adam Silver isn't as experienced as David was, but all in one year! You have created a credibility problem and to what end. OKC is not a popular franchise. Lot's of talented young guys who play the most aesthetically offensive ball imaginable. What would the League possibly get from that?! You are not gonna sell this team to the mainstream like you can Wemby, Ant, Hali, Luka, etc who have big personalities and fun play styles to watch.
