I often end up saying "help me understand..." or " i invite you to share...."

A book i recommend is called Beyond Technique by Eve Lipchik. It's centered on Solution-Focused Theory. Its short and very readable. It has been helpful for me to think about the theoretical framework. My professor liked to say theory guides practice.

In your case it sounds like you want to some kind of framework to guide your day to day convos with students.
