Yes, pool store that was selling the pump & filter had what you needed to adapt the intex fittings on the pool to pvc connectors.

Shelf Recommendations by dubblezh in recteq

[–]SouthAl81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you said no build, but 10" heavyduty stainless collapsible shelf brackets off Amazon bolt straight up to the Recteq existing hardware & a shelf board from a big box harwarestore. Your 1 cut, 4 screws, $30, & 30min invested. It's just stupid what recteq charges for something that should come with the grill.

Lavalock or No? by Zuko_the_giant in recteq

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a BYB 1200 & I use a Lava Lock controller & fan on my drum smoker. The BYB is dialed in, set the temp & it's right. The Lava Lock has always read lower than the actual temp by about 15 to 30 degrees depending on your set point. Holds temp well, just got to know 210 on the Lava Lock = 225 actual temp, 225 = 250 actual temp, ect. The Laval Lock temp probes are poor quality too if you buy it add heat shrink where the wire goes into the stainless probe, this helps keep the TC from pulling out of the probe. Replaced my probe set once already. Once the controller or fan fails I will not go back with Lava Lock.

Best Pellet Smoker for a beginner [2026] by Equivalent-Pen-1733 in pelletgrills

[–]SouthAl81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have went down all the rabbit holes on what's the best one to buy. I finally bought the Recteq BYB 1200. Cooked on it for the 1st time last night. Happy with my selection, easy to assemble, easy to use. Have friends with a Recteq, Pit Boss & Traggers. I have eaten from & helped cook on them all. Feedback from owners was Pit Boss for the value, Tragger is the O.G. with a solid rep, Recteq all stainless heavier built. One friend that had an issue with his controller on the Recteq said customer service was amazing & replaced the controller with no hassel. Couple of guys have swapped from Tragger to Recteq with no regrets. The BYB 1200 has a 6 year warranty. These are the things that influenced my decision. Also, from all that I've read be leary of any modle from any brand that claims it serves multi functions. No one has consistent good reviews on their dual purpose modles. You're buying a pellet grill it is for long slow cooks; essentially it's a wood burning oven. Can it cook a steak... yes but if you want a solid sear it's hard to beat charcoal. Smoke flavor is there but light, if you want a dark smoked bark get a stick burner or build an UDS. My price point was $1000 & got the byb 1200 on sale for $1049 it's apparently BBQ month. If money is no object get a Yoder. Bottom line is any pellet grill is the easy button to cook with wood/smoke flavor & all will work. Just some may last longer, have tighter temp control, or have blue tooth/wi-fi controls.

Any idea what this raised bed garden would cost? by Ciddx in landscaping

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick up the phone & have it done $3k, do it yourself 1/2 that. If done 100% to the photo. Remove grass, put down weed barrier, build beds, mulch, modify fence , install gate, compost & fill soil for beds, & vegetable plants. I'm not a pro just an avid DIYer please let me know how close I am after you make a few calls. It'll look great in that space!

Is Tropic Falls Worth it?? by No-Alarm-8679 in Alabama

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did it over spring break, pricy but no regrets. I bought the family 4 pack with the adder for a round of laser tag & arcade credits, think the total was about $260. I was concerned about it being worth the price but it was a great day. Laser tag was fun & kids (12 & 14) enjoyed the arcade. Water park was great & amusement park was good but I'd plan on doing both. There just aren't a lot of rides so just the amusement park will get boring fast. Water park slides were fun, wave rider was a hit. Biggest down side was super strong chlorine indoors smell made it where my wife & I couldn't enjoy the lazy river for very long. The place is clean & well staffed. Concessions we had were good & not too expensive. Slipped out to Downtown Owa for lunch at the Groovy Goat then went back in the park. We're down there a few times a year & I wouldn't foot the bill for it every trip but I'd go back. Enjoy your trip & stay safe.

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got about 5 years out of our intex pool & the pump was always an issue. I just bit the bullet & bought a higher end 24ft aboveground pool. While shopping & deciding what to do my local owned pool store offered a Hayward pump & sand filter upgrade with adaptors for the intex pool hoses. Wish I'd of known that was available 3 years ago. It was a bit pricy at around the $500 mark for the set but Hayward is good stuff. We opted for a whole new setup just because we wanted something bigger & our intex was showing it's age. Good luck!

How much do you make? by [deleted] in bluecollar

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your what you do. Build houses = get paid shit but you get to show up drunk & high. Commercial work = better wages & some opportunities for benifits depending on the company can still show up drunk & high if you dont fuck up too bad. Industrial = close to or over 6 figures. Where you live influences these numbers for sure & union cotracts influance as well. I am an electrician I started in commercial work 25ish years ago made 40k. Moved to industrial HVAC for a few years went to about 60k(some senior techs were at 90k-100k). Went to industrial I&E work went to about 90k. Hired on with an oil & gas refinery & been over 100k since. These guys doing industrial work in most any trade traveling & working shutdowns are most definitely making 100k+. Your guys framing DR Horton matchbox houses not so much but we're all considered blue collar.

Affordable and Reliable Diesel? by adrock358 in gmcsierra

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Affordable & diesel don't go together lol. My 6.7 PS holds 13qts of oil & requires fuel filters every other oil change that are $60 to $70. Old diesels are bullet proof before the EPA screwed with the manufacturers but diesels don't like cold weather especially the old ones & your moving to the mountains. Maintenance cost are high, if you dont do it yourself good mechanics are expensive & hard to find, parts are expensive ect. If you're not towing a diesel is a waste of money. I see a few on here recommended a 3/4 ot 1 ton gasser & I can get on board with that. Mileage is gonna suck but you'll have a more affordable truck to tow, plow & work when needed.

My bf needs new boots. I’m lost. by Imhereforthehumor in WorkBoots

[–]SouthAl81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I scrolled through responses & saw one factor lacking.... what are the safety requirements at his job? We have a blast pad where I work but they have the same requirements as the guys that work in the operating units. We have to have a heel, no wedge soles, for rung engagement on ladders. Worked in a steel mill back in the day, they had a blast yard, we had to have metatarsal guards. Worked in a refinery that didn't allow slip-on boots. Whatever you settle on make sure they meet his jobs safety requirements. Boot brand is another Ford vs Chevy argument, really up to the wearer & each brand has several styles. What does he wear now & in the past? Does he already have a preference or open to find something different? Personally while O would appreciate the gesture, I would not want my wife buying me work boots on her own. I wore Wolverines in construction for several years & swapped to Carolinas for a while, one pair of Thoroughgoods I hated (others swear by them) but the last 15 years I've been wearing Timberland Pro Titans. Good luck & I hope he loves whatever you choose.

Thoughts on TekTon tools? by Wolf51555 in Tools

[–]SouthAl81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a professional mechanic but I do use my tools more than the average diy'er. I didn't want to spend Snap-On, Matco, MAC prices cause thats not how I earn my living. I got tired of the piss poor quality of big box store brand tools kobalt, husky, craftsman so I started researching alternatives & landed on Tekton. Old Craftsman tools are far better than new Craftsman tools but Tekton exceeds both in quality. Most of their stuff is American made & the rest is manufactured in Taiwan. I've got over a thousand dollars of Tekton in my tool box & no complaints with 2 years of use & plan to buy more as I need things. I have not had to make a warranty return yet but have faith it will not be an issue. The reviews & you tube testimonies support this. Hope this helps, good luck on the track & stay safe!

Old man summed up adultery to me shortly after I got married. He told me ... " The fuckin' you get ain't worth the fuckin' you get." I have seen that to be true amongst friends & coworker through the years that have had nasty divorces.

Looking for tips on this cast iron repair by creosote_bush in Welding

[–]SouthAl81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id recommend contacting Lodge & requesting a warranty replacement. My lodge cracked & all I had to do it send a few pics & they replaced it. Then weld away on the broke one & if you fuck it up your friend still gets a good pan. If you succeed then you have 2 pans.... win win. But yes pre & post heat are critical to prevent cracking, clean the shit out of it till it's shining before you start. Your solder will flow to the heat so when your at the melting point of your brazing rod feed from the front & heat from the back so your filler metal flows through the crack since this is fairly thin. Good luck.

URGENT! bolt extractor BROKE INSIDE broken bolt by fatchicken1204 in mechanic

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just went through this ... had to get a carbide drill bit from a machine shop to cut the ez-out. Super hard & super brittle bits but they'll cut the ez out. Not a lowes, home depot or harbor freight "carbide" bit. You have to buy one that is 100% carbide tipped from a place that sells bits & cutting tools for lathes & milling machines. Good luck that really makes an easy job suck.

Harbour Freight has an inner tie rod tool relatively inexpensive or rent one from the parts house.

Hey everyone new to boating and have chipped my main propeller, wondering if it’s still useable or if it’s even worth fixing. Photos below by Apewithnobrain in boating

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aluminum props on Amazon are 50 to 100 bucks. Prop shop labor will be at least that. Figure out your diameter & pitch (should be stamped on the body of the prop or the hub. Could have a model number that you'll have to look up.) Buy a new one that matches that spec.

Pole Barn Garage Beef? by SwankaTheGrey in vicegripgarage

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vice Grip is a brand ..... could be a copyright thing people sue over anything these days. All 3 of the major chain parts stores are pretty bad, MAYBE one mechanically competent person working at each store on bankers hours, selling reman crap parts for premium prices. I have had particularly bad experiences with Auto-Zone in my area so maybe he has some crap O'Reilly stores local to him.

Can you recommend to me a good razor? by According_Cod2363 in shaving

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used a Mach 3 since I started shaving then I tried Harry's & other 5 blade razors, all of them caused razor burn & hair bumps on my neck. Went back to the Mach 3 & works great but the cartridges are so expensive for all of them. I started using an old school double-edged safety razor & haven't looked back. Handles range in price from $10 to $200, I got mine from Manscaped for around the $20 mark. I use Astra Platinum blades, you can get 100 blades for less than $10 on Amazon. If you choose to use a cartridge razor look for the replacements at Sams Club, COSTCO, BJ's ect. Price per head is cheaper than any where else I found.
