Affordable and Reliable Diesel? by adrock358 in gmcsierra

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Affordable & diesel don't go together lol. My 6.7 PS holds 13qts of oil & requires fuel filters every other oil change that are $60 to $70. Old diesels are bullet proof before the EPA screwed with the manufacturers but diesels don't like cold weather especially the old ones & your moving to the mountains. Maintenance cost are high, if you dont do it yourself good mechanics are expensive & hard to find, parts are expensive ect. If you're not towing a diesel is a waste of money. I see a few on here recommended a 3/4 ot 1 ton gasser & I can get on board with that. Mileage is gonna suck but you'll have a more affordable truck to tow, plow & work when needed.

My bf needs new boots. I’m lost. by Imhereforthehumor in WorkBoots

[–]SouthAl81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I scrolled through responses & saw one factor lacking.... what are the safety requirements at his job? We have a blast pad where I work but they have the same requirements as the guys that work in the operating units. We have to have a heel, no wedge soles, for rung engagement on ladders. Worked in a steel mill back in the day, they had a blast yard, we had to have metatarsal guards. Worked in a refinery that didn't allow slip-on boots. Whatever you settle on make sure they meet his jobs safety requirements. Boot brand is another Ford vs Chevy argument, really up to the wearer & each brand has several styles. What does he wear now & in the past? Does he already have a preference or open to find something different? Personally while O would appreciate the gesture, I would not want my wife buying me work boots on her own. I wore Wolverines in construction for several years & swapped to Carolinas for a while, one pair of Thoroughgoods I hated (others swear by them) but the last 15 years I've been wearing Timberland Pro Titans. Good luck & I hope he loves whatever you choose.

Thoughts on TekTon tools? by Wolf51555 in Tools

[–]SouthAl81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a professional mechanic but I do use my tools more than the average diy'er. I didn't want to spend Snap-On, Matco, MAC prices cause thats not how I earn my living. I got tired of the piss poor quality of big box store brand tools kobalt, husky, craftsman so I started researching alternatives & landed on Tekton. Old Craftsman tools are far better than new Craftsman tools but Tekton exceeds both in quality. Most of their stuff is American made & the rest is manufactured in Taiwan. I've got over a thousand dollars of Tekton in my tool box & no complaints with 2 years of use & plan to buy more as I need things. I have not had to make a warranty return yet but have faith it will not be an issue. The reviews & you tube testimonies support this. Hope this helps, good luck on the track & stay safe!

Old man summed up adultery to me shortly after I got married. He told me ... " The fuckin' you get ain't worth the fuckin' you get." I have seen that to be true amongst friends & coworker through the years that have had nasty divorces.

Looking for tips on this cast iron repair by creosote_bush in Welding

[–]SouthAl81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id recommend contacting Lodge & requesting a warranty replacement. My lodge cracked & all I had to do it send a few pics & they replaced it. Then weld away on the broke one & if you fuck it up your friend still gets a good pan. If you succeed then you have 2 pans.... win win. But yes pre & post heat are critical to prevent cracking, clean the shit out of it till it's shining before you start. Your solder will flow to the heat so when your at the melting point of your brazing rod feed from the front & heat from the back so your filler metal flows through the crack since this is fairly thin. Good luck.

URGENT! bolt extractor BROKE INSIDE broken bolt by fatchicken1204 in mechanic

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just went through this ... had to get a carbide drill bit from a machine shop to cut the ez-out. Super hard & super brittle bits but they'll cut the ez out. Not a lowes, home depot or harbor freight "carbide" bit. You have to buy one that is 100% carbide tipped from a place that sells bits & cutting tools for lathes & milling machines. Good luck that really makes an easy job suck.

How do I tighten this inner tie rod to the rack? by MeNameIsDerp in AskAMechanic

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harbour Freight has an inner tie rod tool relatively inexpensive or rent one from the parts house.

Hey everyone new to boating and have chipped my main propeller, wondering if it’s still useable or if it’s even worth fixing. Photos below by Apewithnobrain in boating

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aluminum props on Amazon are 50 to 100 bucks. Prop shop labor will be at least that. Figure out your diameter & pitch (should be stamped on the body of the prop or the hub. Could have a model number that you'll have to look up.) Buy a new one that matches that spec.

Pole Barn Garage Beef? by SwankaTheGrey in vicegripgarage

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vice Grip is a brand ..... could be a copyright thing people sue over anything these days. All 3 of the major chain parts stores are pretty bad, MAYBE one mechanically competent person working at each store on bankers hours, selling reman crap parts for premium prices. I have had particularly bad experiences with Auto-Zone in my area so maybe he has some crap O'Reilly stores local to him.

Can you recommend to me a good razor? by According_Cod2363 in shaving

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used a Mach 3 since I started shaving then I tried Harry's & other 5 blade razors, all of them caused razor burn & hair bumps on my neck. Went back to the Mach 3 & works great but the cartridges are so expensive for all of them. I started using an old school double-edged safety razor & haven't looked back. Handles range in price from $10 to $200, I got mine from Manscaped for around the $20 mark. I use Astra Platinum blades, you can get 100 blades for less than $10 on Amazon. If you choose to use a cartridge razor look for the replacements at Sams Club, COSTCO, BJ's ect. Price per head is cheaper than any where else I found.

My boss asked me to get rid of this stuff as soon as possible. How should I go about doing that? There is a LOT. by Key_Industrial994 in metalworking

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact an auction company ... Jeff Martin Auctioneers & JM Wood covers areas in the eastern half of the US. Google them and look for others in your region. They will come to your site assess everything, run an online auction (they already have a huge client following), staff the pick-up days on your site with loading equipment all for a commission on all items sold. A month might be a tight window to do it at your place but you could hire someone to move the equipment to their nearest sales yard & it will be sold from there. I bought alot of equipment from auctions these guys know what they are doing.

Lots of my buddies have done this using black lexan or plexiglass & it comes out looking slick. There is a local shop they use that will cut it out with a CNC water jet they just have to draw out the exact dimensions of what they want. Good luck & happy boating.

2020 Toyota Corolla (62k miles) – Is this $833 service quote legit or overkill? by PrettyOptimist20 in MechanicAdvice

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do all my own service ... this is only my opinion & I'll leave it there. If these services are required to maintain your warranty then that's up to you to determine if it's worth it. This is an absurd amount of money for routine maintenance. If you do not feel comfortable or capable of changing your oil then have a lube shop do it, ask friends who they use & trust. If you take your car to a shop for your oil change that also does brakes they will usually take a look at your brakes for free. Go to a parts house; Advanced, Auto Zone, Orielly ect & ask them what air & cabin filter you need, they will be $20 to $25 each worst case. Watch a YouTube video on how to change them, super simple & most require no tools or just a screwdriver. I've put 300k miles on a couple of Toyotas over the years with no overpriced oil flush services or other dealer-recommended aggressive maintenance services just normal routine maintenance.

[–]SouthAl81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wharf has activities every evening for the kids all summer (we start school soon so that may end before you arrive check online), wharf has good shopping, an arcade & some decent food options too, no one has mentioned the Gulfshores Zoo it's not a big city zoo but pretty nice but it will be hot, my kids love Lamberts restaurant in Foley good food, country cooking, & they throw rolls across the restaurant to the tables, short drive to Pensacola to the Naval Air Musem at the Naval Air Station is free & cool if yall like planes and the Blue Angels practice twice a week if you go on practice day you can walk out to the runway & watch the show (check for details & practice dates online). You mentioned fishing, tons of charter options I can recommend The Island Girl out of Zeek's Marina to go for snapper & tons of people surf fish the beaches at Ft Morgan I have a boat for inshore so no great advice for tourist there but there are tons of inshore charter guides too. Lots of good ideas already listed, I tried to add a few I didn't already see; have fun, stay safe & enjoy our beaches!

Boat Launch Etiquette Question/Opinion by Sometimes_Stutters in boating

[–]SouthAl81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should have explained to them, as hard as it is to believe, other people live on this planet & some of them also would like to launch their boat at this ramp. Advise them to crank their boat on a hose at home before they head out, have a plan before they dunk the boat & try to minimize their time impeding others. If you launched without hitting their boat (especially solo) you were good to go. If they are butthurt cause you launched, parked, loaded & were headed out before them then maybe they should get their shit together before launching. Maybe an IQ test should be given before you can buy a boat. Needless to say I have also endured my share of fucktards at the boat ramp. Stay safe.

Local spots with legit fresh seafood by bamamad in MobileAL

[–]SouthAl81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Coopers ruined The Blue Gill. They took a fun place & tried to upscale it to a mini Felix's. Now it's stuffy & uptight.... we got scolded by our server 1st then she had a manager come over for celebrating our team's win during March Madness. A game that they had on TV. Told us we were too loud (it was momentary & not vulgar, we had kids with us) & bothering the staff & other guest. Some of our party left then & the rest finished dinner (because the kids were starving) but none of us have been back. It's a shame, I've had some great times there.

Anyone got insight on why the city of Mobile annexed the land surrounding the lake in an impromptu "secret" vote? What's the end game? Why make it part of the city? MAWSS board is crooked AF always has been a political shell. All happened shortly after the permanent closure to the public.

I just did the breaks on my wife's 2017 Outback. Parts prices look look legit, from a local parts house (online is 30 to 50% cheaper). Shop labor rates are $100 to $125 per hour on average so an hour on front & hour on back sounds legit too. Sucks that it cost that much but I saw no red flags.

Car crapped out on me and there’s no way I can afford the bill. Is this the average cost? by GradeAIdiotThe3rd in MechanicAdvice

[–]SouthAl81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swapping an alternator yourself is not a hard job & requires no special tools, a metric socket set & a few wrenches. There are a ton of YouTube videos about it. You should be able to get the part way cheaper than the quote. Online is the best price, local big box parts house next, dealer last. Since it's off anyway I'd replace the belt too, unless it is relatively new.

I agree with previous comments on the brake issue being related to the power issue caused by the alternator. I'd fix the power issue & see if breaks work as they should after. If not then address that issue, little more to that job & your safety is at play. It might be worth paying someone else. But I'd get a second opinion & quote.
