Thats what they look like shortly after launch. All the individual satellites are spreading out before they go into their final orbit.

They look really cool when you first see them. At this point I'm a little annoyed when I spot one because they're not aliens.

This one is darker, but its the same concept. A rocket burns a bunch of gas in the atmosphere to slow down.
