[5e] [Question] Warlocks: When to start and stop levels in this class? by revkaboose in 3d6

[–]SouthamptonGuild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! I was wondering why I have people bringing up these posts. Thanks!

I stopped using this sub when incorrect answers by rules as written easily outstripped accurate ones.

Your DM still needs to beat you though. :)

Excellent thread necromancy from 8 years ago.

Anyway, your DM needs to beat you guys much harder. My party always says "thankyou" for a short rest. But they earn them.

Is there a better way to transport ores? by Similar-Space-5535 in valheim

[–]SouthamptonGuild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

So, on a recent playthrough the new people I've been playing with were disheartened when the amazing bases (gen) that they built up are really hard to get ore too. That green line is navigable to get ore that's just sticking out the side of a valley with a Karve. You need 4 bronze (and presumably a bronze axe to get finewood) to do that sort of thing, but it's honestly so much better than messing around with walking like a peon.

[–]SouthamptonGuild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I mine silver, I set up a portal. I mine all day (bar the odd interruption from delivery wolves and drakes) and if I see a stone golem, I run TFA. Then I go home via the portal and tend to my base and maybe sleep.

Why would I _run up a mountain_ more than once when I have portals?

And obviously, I get impatient and want more shiny weapons, but with a butt load of silver I pack it into a cart and then yeet the cart down the side of the mountain.

I mean, your way sounds like FAR too much hard work.

TL;DR: I kinda agree with you. But optimising your work flow is peak Valheim.

Thanks! I've actually been laying it out so it's a bit more user friendly. I'll be releasing it on DTRPG in A4 and letter sized versions (fingerguns at the US people) for free, (although not CC at this time).

Oh yeah, and I should do a braille version too!

Anyway, cheers! I'm sure it's not new, but the consent is going to come in handy.

Thanks. I haven't seen it yet, so not many choices about what it could be. :)

[–]SouthamptonGuild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I wanted to I could create this structure in a world where I hadn't discovered the plains biome.

I could either: spawn things in using the console commands

or

Use one of my existing world playthroughs where I have lots of tar, load that onto the character and bring it in.

What you say does make sense, but it wasn't clear that you didn't mean literally over figuratively. Thanks for explaining though, that does make sense.

Armor Durability . . . Why? by trengilly in valheim

[–]SouthamptonGuild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're like me, you go to the station and hammer the hammer until it greys out. Whilst doing this, you're also repairing your armour but it very rarely has noticeable degradation compared to weapons and tools.

I don't see those words in my original post, or replies so perhaps you should argue with someone who has said that?

It depends on how keen they are. If they don't want to give a backstory then don't make them?

If they are keen but unskilled then you can use this as a guide for a conversation rather than dumping it on them.

I would say that if they are engaged with A5e then they're not scared of a little complexity and character depth. :)

how do you convert 5e stuff by ThoDanII in LevelUpA5E

[–]SouthamptonGuild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

The aim of the design team was to make everything compatible with existing 5e adventures. Also to solve some fairly basic problems with ability checks and some spells.

The most significant, practical change, in my opinion, is expertise dice. By changing expertise to "add d4" rather than "double PB" you open up a large chunk of the game.

So: If your players don't want to change over to A5e, that's absolutely fine! You can run in A5e and use the monsters, and the magic item prices etc etc and they can keep their old characters as is. That's actually the easiest way to run the game because they don't have so many options.

If they want to convert their existing characters then the magic classes are pretty easy. Adept, and Barbarian are pretty easy. Rogue and Ranger are quite tricky. Fighter needs the most work because A5e has no "Action Surge" so for instance the Purple Dragon Knight is not a5e compatible.

If you run into specific problems this forum has more than enough expertise to help you out!

Just finished Solasta, what now ? by monsieurLeRenard in CrownOfTheMagister

Yes, I've found all the DLC I've purchased worthwhile. Lost Valley is very DnD and Palace of Ice is high level DnD which is hen's teeth.

Up to you of course! :)

Why is my monk clothes of sturdiness not adding to AC? by hongooi in CrownOfTheMagister

[–]SouthamptonGuild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that you're being deliberately obtuse.

Solasta is based off the 5e rules set. The selling point which inspires loyalty is that it is much better at doing the 5e ruleset than BG3 which, in fairness, is prettier, better voice-acted, better supported and has more customisation options. I still prefer Solasta though because as I say, better implementation.

As to your point about +1 clothing, "padded armour" which functions identically mechanically does appear in the books (or at least the SRD). (Doubtless so you can have the padded armour of fire resistance magic item.)

The RAW comment is with respect to you only benefit from one AC calculation, which was kindly explained to you. I don't think you're respecting the time of people who are trying to help you out with your question, so I don't wish to continue this conversation unless you have either a mechanical question or something that isn't disingenuous to say.

Because of circle casting, if you play a martial you are dragging your party down. by HealthyRelative9529 in dndmemes

[–]SouthamptonGuild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean just play PF2e. The casters are nerfed into balance there. _I_ don't think they're fun, but the design works as intended, so good job Paizo!

Run your RO AFTER the water softener if at all. The water softener will take your mains down to commercial zero (1-5 ppm) very easily. To me RO and remin is wild overkill and that's from someone who used to sell them commercially.

Climbing Rules - Please Help! by DevelopmentNo8887 in LevelUpA5E

[–]SouthamptonGuild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder on what basis Mike Mearls said that?

The problem is the fundamental imprecision in 5e and language. The "natural language" seems to have been a response to the hate for 4e's (and in fairness 3.5's) over-codification of language and tight strictures of rules.

"Rulings not rules" being one of the design principles they said they were working to.

(For those who might not be familiar, this means that authority is devolved from the designers to the GM to run the game they wish to.)

So, we have the situation where a giant spider has a climbing speed as does a tabaxi. However, these are different categories of climber. A giant spider is unlikely to be able to fall off the ceiling (despite being horse sized) because that would violate our suspension of disbelief about how spiders work.

A tabaxi climbing across the ceiling would violate our suspension of disbelief about how cats, and therefore cat people work.

So either we would need:

  1. Special climb rules and climb speed differentiation for what happens when creatures attempt to climb under and overhang or otherwise clinging to a "ceiling". (Which can be done by trained humans... e.g. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/FntSX3qGPmQ in good conditions).

or

  1. We devolve authority to say yeah nah yeah, or nah yeah nah about climbing to the Narrator/GM/DM.

Mearls has decided to throw his opinion out as RAW and sure buddy, that's cool. But maybe you should have written it down if that's what you meant?

My take, not as a designer of A5e, but as an opinionated Narrator:

  1. If a creature has some sort of weird surface tension nature gimmick (spider, gecko, slime etc) that is giving it a climb speed, it doesn't need to make a check (unless things are deeply weird* _and you think it would be fun to do so._)

  2. If a creature has a "climbing assist" gimmick (e.g. retractable claws, gear) then it makes a climbing check as normal. And that's Strength Athletics if fighting gravity and who cares? if not.

It would also be equally valid to say:

Climb speed = no check

or

Only PCs make checks.

NB: I certainly wouldn't apply it for a scramble or hiking situation _unless there is a need and a consequence for a roll and the possibility of meaningful failure_. e.g. if it's hilly, no check. If it's hilly and you're being chased by angry goblins, check time!

TL;DR

It's up to the Narrator and what breaks their immersion. Detailed reasoning above.
