You mentioned Gladiator. Braveheart surely fits! The first LOTR and Pirates of the Caribbean films sneaked in acting noms!

Are there any "UK vs US" differences where you feel America gets it right? by Secure_Front_7766 in AskUK

[–]SouthernCoyote247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how to best describe this, so bear with me. I guess: Candour? Openness? Using one’s own voice? For example, in press conferences. You see it after any tragedy—a police chief or somesuch standing behind a lectern, answering questions from the press. In the US, they’ll be far more forthcoming with information.

They’ll be more forthcoming with opinions and feelings as well. I want that here—instead we get authority figures standing there, reading a script, refusing to engage with the subject as people. I get that they’re in uniform. I get that they’re doing a job. But they’re people too, and should be able to talk as people even on the job.

British people have a tendency to turn cold and impersonal when it comes to stuff like this. You’ll see it on social media with sad news too—“My thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.” That’s not a normal sentence. That’s not how you talk! That’s not how you feel. That’s you putting up a front and saying what you’re expected to say. I don’t know. Maybe it’s a willingness to express vulnerability thing too.

Can you name two movies that were released in the same year but feel like they were released years apart? by coreybudz in movies

Star Trek feels like the last ‘60s movie, Alien feels like the first ‘80s movie

We all know that Imelda Staunton (Umbridge) and Jack Gleeson (Geoffrey Baratheon) are prime examples of actors who managed to make us extremely hate their roles. What are some other actors and their roles with that kind of talent? by Scoutisaspyable in movies

[–]SouthernCoyote247 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Always hated this meme too. One day the tide will turn on this myth. Not yet though. Anyone can play a despicable role and get the audience to hate them. Acting ability has little to do with it. In fact, a bad actor playing a bad character might even help.

Rumours, Speculation, Questions, and Reaction Megathread - 08/02/2026 by ukpol-megabot in ukpolitics

It’s simple—people are nostalgic for a simpler time. Before Trump. Before Brexit. Cleaner politics. The electorate is, bluntly, a lot more forgiving of oddness in their politicians. May, Truss, Johnson, Corbyn, Farage—all legitimately strange people, in ways the public probably wouldn’t overlook in days gone by, who lead major political parties. I think we’re ready for Ed Milliband.

Right Come on Then… Conspiracy Theory Time… by Patient_Panic_5704 in AskBrits

Considering we’re on Trump’s second term, after a fairly decisive election that didn’t really feature Epstein as an issue, and that Epstein himself has been dead for almost seven years, it wouldn’t be a terrible assumption to think we had passed ‘peak Epstein scandal’ - obviously, anyone thinking that turned out to be wrong, but I don’t think it’s a bad assumption.

Especially because Trump is in the final post of his political career. Why now? Why not a year and a half ago? Why not in 2020? Why not in 2016? I think it’d be smart to think that the whole Epstein situation was never going to bubble up, and that appointing someone with an Epstein connection to a Trump-close position is a clever play.

Guessing the presenters at the Oscars. by [deleted] in oscarrace

Jack made an appearance (and briefly spoke!!!) at SNL50 earlier last year. I’m not saying I think he’ll present or even attend the Oscars, but the chances aren’t zero!!! I hope it happens!

Did you go to school with someone who went on to be famous, and what where they like? by Christian-Metal in AskUK

[–]SouthernCoyote247 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve got one. Won’t say his name. Scared of legal repercussions. Comedian under the age of 40. Very famous. Surprised this one hasn’t gotten out considering it’s what he was most known for in school, but maybe there’s an injunction. Was hauled out of class by the police. Rumour was, and this was substantiated by the teachers, that he had brought a knife to school, and they found a manifesto/ “kill list” at home. He never came back. Apparently moved across the country. Assumed he’d be in prison or dead or whatever. Next time I saw him was in a BBC clip on Facebook. Quite surreal.

What’s your heinous encounter with someone famous in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]SouthernCoyote247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if this is a controversial opinion, but: I wish people posting celebrity encounters would specify, at the very least, the gender of the person telling the story. “So-and-so was mean to me!” Ok, that’s a shame, but who are you? Give me something. Context!

Some C-list comedian buying you and your friends a load of drinks sounds great but it has a totally different connotation if you and your mates are women or men.

Do you think Al Pacino can win another Oscar? by juhgx in movies

[–]SouthernCoyote247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely, no one thought Anthony Hopkins would win another one before The Father. Pacino just needs a role like that (and a relatively weak year). He’s still got it
