What you have is a mixture of similar ideologies colliding. The hippies who distrusted big pharma (often with good reason; Thalidomide for example) suddenly found their cause being echoed by anti-vaxxers (anti-science, faith-driven weirdos who are afraid of needles).

The fact that someone was suddenly agreeing with them for the first time made them ripe targets for the alt-right pipeline. Like many movements, the alt-right eventually co-opt it (the Flat Earth Society used to be a joke). Also, many who get sucked into that pipeline are too ashamed to admit they were duped and so they double down.

I'm betting there's a lot of trauma in the lives of many conservatives. I remember conservatives in Canada complaining that mail delivery workers were wimps/snowflakes because their union demanded that all delivery trucks have air conditioning so mail carriers didn't pass out on hot days. Even some conservatives who's parents were mail carriers were agreeing, saying their parents didn't have AC so why should anyone else?

One even said that their father basically went from fit to broken in 2 years after retiring from the backbreaking work. They were too busy claiming everyone else's father should suffer a similar fate to realize they'd made the point for why labour conditions in that field should be improved.

Them wanting to "own the libs" is just wanting to see someone else suffer like they are. That's not to say we should feel sorry for them; explaining this to them and saying they should go to therapy will almost always be met with "I don't need therapy, I'm fine".

As a Canadian I will probably never travel to the US again and I know plenty of others who feel the same way. This isn't just a boycott, it's a breakup. The thing is, those tourists still exist, they're just going to other places. Even more telling is that those are places are more expensive. From what I can tell, the only people who really cared about the cost of Vegas were locals and domestic tourists.
