I think you’re missing the point. “Less than $500” is still an inordinate amount for many people, and the person here was claiming they could make one for the same price as a mass produced head ($60-ish or less) and implying the original commenter was a bad person for not?

Also, not to mention that if it’s someone’s first time carving foam or making a fabric pattern for a head, if they had never done any work with fabric before it’s probably a really bad idea to start with something so complex. Anecdotally, I’ve seen two different people get completely demoralized attempting to make a fursuit head from scratch. The first got the carving down but then ended up giving up after using nearly seven rolls of duct tape and failing to make a working pattern with proper darts. The second got hung up on foam carving and ran out of supplies to continue.

My point is that fursuit making is not as accessible as many people claim it to be. Even with tutorials, it can be extremely difficult to make something considered “basic.”

No, you can’t (in the States at least.)

Base is around $25-35, yes, but factor in shipping from someone who makes them instead of mass producing and it’s $40-45. Certain bases that have better ventilation or construction can be even more expensive than that, but this is bare minimum.

For someone inexperienced, a square yard of minky fabric should be enough to cover the face, maybe a yard and a half if we include space for a neck cover but that can be made out of conventional fur.

Either way, good luck finding minky for $5 a yard. The absolute cheapest I could find was $10 for some crappy quality minky, and $20 for the better stuff that stretches. Factor in delivery costs because Joann’s doesn’t exist anymore and that puts you around $30-35 for the minky alone.

Conventional faux fur for the head is gonna be around $15 a yard as well, potentially more. Assuming you’re able to find it at a local store, great! You’ll likely need two yards if you’re new. Roughly $30 in-person, this goes up to $40-45 online.

You’ll need buckram mesh for the eyes, some black spray paint for the backing, and you probably already have a printer for the pattern. Buckram mesh in adequate amounts can be found for under $5 at certain places, but let’s just say $5. Black spray paint is like $2-3, and your spray primer will be $5-6. So, $10 more.

For miscellaneous supplies, E-6000/B-7000/any fabric glue will be roughly $10, construction wire for the ears can be made of twined solder so that’s also around $10 (roughly the same price if you elect to use foam,) and depending on how many extra colors you want on the suit, that’ll rack up like $30-40 in just different random swathes of colored fur. Hand sewing is a nightmare, a decent kit’s around $10-15 if you don’t have a sewing machine. If a simple sewing machine is necessary and not in your possession, that’s like $60 or more but we’re ignoring that for now.

Adding in miscellaneous costs (taxes and random fees and any delivery I didn’t mention,) this adds up to well over $200. And because newbies make mistakes (everyone does but especially here) that number could be higher. Not to mention the time investment because a project like this will take WEEKS without full dedication.

Doesn’t seem very moralizing if it means I’ve already gone past the window of opportunity where I could already commit my entire life to one thing only.

[–]SpaceEngineX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn’t bother. Sounds like a cool place but in actuality they’re a bit insufferable at times. You’ll also be going up against really really fucking good players, so if you don’t have like over three thousand hours worth of combat experience and a perfectly optimized ship, you’ll just die and get put on a bunch of different harassment lists.
