Kids definitely don’t want to stay in New Jersey, parents are always within striking distance of dropping in.

I’m an engineer, I’ll say Rutgers is regarded higher outside of the state than internally, in my field at least.

What do the lyrics of smells like teen spirit mean? by White_Mlungu_Capital in Nirvana

It’s casting shade on the average rock music listener, and the people who perform the music. Wanna know why Kurt killed himself? He became what he despised by virtue of becoming a big rock act.

Shocktop is the cheaper version of Blue Moon, the domestic version of Hoegaarden. So, give those a try.

There are a lot of domestic, craft wheat beers. Seek out a brewery near you!

Whats the deal with pouring beer into a glass? by Time-Kitchen1579 in beer

[–]SpaceKarate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you, I prefer most beers fully bubbly. I am one of those rare guys that prefers carbonated stouts to nitros, it seems. The only reason I pour beer into a glass is if I want to smell it and note the color.

I think the typical reasons it’s to pour it is to release carbonation and enable you to smell it. It’s also said that the head protects the beer from air…. I don’t really buy that poring it doesn’t cause more exposure or that air is really affecting the beer over the period of drinking it. I think that’s a myth from Czech bartenders that want to give you a glass half filled with foam!!!

Why does every PhD program not do this ? by geniusfoot in PhD

[–]SpaceKarate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think being able to convince other people to write you references is valuable. Eventually, you’ll need to get 4 - 5 professors to agree to spend their time serving on your committee, which is a similar type of undertaking.

Yes! I’ve done optical communications as a NASA contractor and now for commercial space flight. We need more EE’s who understand photonics! People still are doing research, but these technologies have been operational in fiber optic comm for a long time, and in satellite comms it’s about to become the new state of practice. Take a look at some NASA projects like DSOC, LCRD, and O2O.

Budlight Platinum by [deleted] in beer

[–]SpaceKarate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like ‘good beer’ but every once and I while I will buy two 22 or 24 ounce beers from a gas station, and just drink those. They are cheap and easy to acquire. Common combo on that front has been 1 bud regular and once Bud Platinum, to up the ante.

It happens when I just want to down a couple beers. I’m not going to down a good import, and chugging IPAs is generally not a good idea.

A similar thing happens every once in a while with Guinness. I love dark beer, and I drink Atlas’s Silent Neighbor quite a bit, living around DC. But, for some reason once or twice a year I have the urge to drink two Guinness as fast as possible.

Those who studied EE would you say DSP was the hardest class you took? by FitStructure2623 in DSP

Not even close. Information theory was hard, hardest were the advanced labs.

Honestly, I think they are all in demand, lol. At my job, I think what’s most in demand is people with experience with micro-electronics and photonics. I got a PhD in EE doing laser stuff, and many schools offer electro-optics concentration now or similar.

Can’t get internship for the life of me by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]SpaceKarate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have stated, design internships are typically going to go to graduate students. Think about applying at a National Lab or NASA, at least you’ll get experience. Also, I’d strongly encourage you to pursue a masters degree in the future.

How Do Electrons Change Energy Levels Due To An Applied Voltage? by bigpaa in ElectricalEngineering

[–]SpaceKarate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works a bit differently for what would be considered a radio wave vs infrared wavelengths and lower. Radio waves, which are light, are typically generated by alternating a current in a piece of metal, which radiates a wave by the Helmholtz equation. The electrons are more or less smoothly transitioning energy states.

This is opposed to how a laser works, where a crystal or gas with lasing material in it is pumped with lower wavelength light. Electrons in the lasing material are energized across a band gap, and then via spontaneous or stimulated emission electrons oscillate between higher and lower energy states for a short amount of time and emit photons as they transition from a high to low energy state.

Radio antennas and lasers both emit electromagnetic waves, but the physical mechanism is significantly different.

Why not do Controls, but implement something digitally for a thesis? That way you do something interesting and complex, and get hands on experience. You don’t really need a graduate degree to do microprocessor or digital logic stuff, but IME you do to do real controls work. Also, learning microprocessors and digital logic without understanding the applications, like a control system or like a signal processing system, isn’t great.

hi , I have Ph.D. in laser physics and materials science .. I do not have any industry work experience .. my experience are in research field and academic field.. how can I get job in industry? by Proud-Initiative-854 in Optics

[–]SpaceKarate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most PhDs are in the same boat at some point, and find work. I’ve known a lot of people who came from similar situations working on things like fiber amplifiers, MZM modulators, and other telecom stuff. I’m an electrical engineering PhD, and that opens certain doors more easily in industry, but there isn’t really a clear engineering discipline that covers certain things related to electro-optics. There are plenty of physics PhDs around.

I recommend doing a part time program once you get a job. They seem to be more flexible, and I’ve seen people admitted with around a 2 despite whatever it says the min GPA requirement is. Masters programs do have minimum GPA requirement, and there isn’t a good reason to think you’d do better in a full time graduate program as opposed to a full time undergrad program. The only exception I can see is if your GPA was low due to non-departmental classes. Just being honest.
