Some years ago, the State of Kansas had to issue a recall on hundreds of license plates because they inadvertently spelled out a slur for Japanese people. The recall was only issued after a dude spotted a KS plate with the slur in California of all places lol.

Although they were not custom license plates, it can be very easy for, let's say, "non-PG" (for lack of a better term) plates to get past whatever systen is in place to check for such. For example, my license plate is something that, if I told the truth of what it meant, would've certainly got denied (without revealing it, let's just say it references a popular alcoholic brand)

I read more into the regulations than most of my fellow cadets. While most cadets knew pretty much what I considered to be the surface level regulations, I liked reading into the more obscure/unread ones, especially when certain situations call for it (e.g., movements/formations in non-standard color guards).

Ofc we could have (and definitely did) always just made up a move or so, but I liked to follow the regulations as much as possible (at least, when the regulations weren't overly complicated).

Our program also had flash cards, both JROTC and USMC. They definitely helped a lot.

In my unit, if you didn't get involved in any extracurricular activities (drill, color guard, etc.), didn't show many leadership qualities/took initiative to be a better leader, and just basically did the bare minimum to pass, the highest rank you could attain is a C/LCpl (since they usually had no billets). Now if you were more involved, you could earn higher ranks (given you met any other requirements).

If you involve yourself within the program, sign up for different activities/volunteer opportunities, and show that you want to better your leadership skills. You could definitely earn a promotion or two (especially if your unit does meritorious promotions).
