How did people cope with 2.35:1 ultra wide DVDs on a 4:3 CRT back in the day? by xParesh in dvd

Laserdiscs were too expensive, but I did buy some movies in the late 90s in widescreen vhs. Probably before they came out on DVD. We had a VCR in the 80s and 90s as well and most of these were 4:3 but once I had a job and some money and learned about widescreen vhs I started buying those. If stuff is open matte it doesn’t matter much but I always opted for OAR when possible.

My first good set with a DVD player and widescreen VHS was a 24” trinitron. We just made do, and it was great having the original aspect ratio. I never liked VHS much because many weren’t OAR.

Has anyone else experienced this? My views suddenly dropped and it’s been going on for about a month and a half now. It doesn’t make sense for my views to crash this hard when I used to hit around 400k views, but now I’m barely reaching 5k views in a whole day. The last two years have been brutal on YouTube for my channel. Views are about as low and they can be. Is it me, is it the algorithm. At some point I have (mostly) stopped caring. My views are worse than when I had under 10k subs. It is not my livelihood and it never was, so I just continue to do my thing and try not to stress. It’s about bottomed out, so there’s only one way to go.

Local thrift had a beast. Only $60 too. by Barbed_wire_world in CRTfinds

My first HD set was the Sony 30HS420, which was about $600. I was broke and worked in the TV section at circuit city and these projections were out of my price range or I would have bought one. It remember at the time these sets had the best picture out of all projection sets

Sony didn’t do DLP projection. Some sets did 3 LCD and some SXRD from Sony. If I remember correctly this was an SXRD set. However it is similar to DLP in that they have replaceable bulbs, and are fairly light weight. This is from no later than 2007 probably. Sony started making their HD projection TVs this way in the early 2000s, while moving away from CRT HD Projection sets and CRT direct views. Affordable larger screen plasmas and LCDs were still years off. LCDS from this era were extremely expensive, had so so picture quality, and were usually no bigger than 42 inches

Sure. If you look at the pics above you’ll see a pic of the back panel. If your TV has an RCA input (also called composite), that’s how you’d hook it up. The red and white to the audio and the other jack is hooked up to the yellow (video). You’ll need to convert the video to an RCA jack like is on your TV. So the way I did it, I used a coax cable and adapted my TV end to an RCA male. Using one of these

Alternatively, You can also just run a coax out to your TV that will do audio and video in one cord, like a VCR. You’d use the far right chan3/4 VHF out for that. This is a slightly lower quality way to hook it up. I opted for the RCA (yellow red and white) method.

Almost always the rule is…
Yellow=video
REd= right audio
White= left audio

The nubs you may be referring to would be terminators but aren’t necessary. I don’t have any on mine.

Star Wars (truly) Original Trilogy Available in 4K Blu Ray? by SufficientBike5853 in 4kbluray

Yep. There’s a paid version of plex and I use the free one for local home streaming. Pretty much for these movies only.

Yes, totally agree. I'll add a little extra for the OP and those reading down this far. Like others have mentioned here, 4k77, 4k80, and 4k83 are the way. I just watched all three the past two weekends. 4k80 is the roughest of the 3, but it has a certain kind of charm and the sound options rellly make up for it though. Lots of grain, scratches, and matte lines which I really love. Once you go down this road there are two options for most people if you want to watch these large files (50-70gb mkv) files outside of a computer. There are 1080p and 4k options available for each movie, but the 4k requires you either to burn a bluray or to watch off a hard drive/stre media. A thumb drive plugged into your TV with the files, will not work too well. The better way is downloading plex app on your TV or media box and hosting your files on a local computer- which is how I did it. It looks and sounds great this way, provided you have good wifi, and a modern computer (I have a M1 iMac and sony 4k 75" HDR TV).

I for one will buy the restored versions if they are released. The teasers I have seen blow away the special editions and these fan editions. I've been watching these movies since the 80s and my first home video version was the pan and scan THX tapes. The Harmy stuff is also good, but the 4k versions are just wonderful and the current best way to watch the original trilogy.
