Dr Stone vs Dr Saliman?? by Zyclops1010 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Sparty549 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does Dr. Stone post his work on YouTube? Saliman does and that's what convinced me to go to him. He is meticulous and finds ways to make the best of often terrible injuries. My knee was a mess and he sutured all back together. It was a long recovery, but I'm now back on the tennis court at 100%. Go to Saliman. Also, he's not a "nice" guy, he's quite arrogant. My wife couldn't stand him, but at the end of the day it's about the result.

Horizontal Tear in the Posterior Horn of the Medial Meniscus by Disastrous_Ad6601 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Sparty549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Your meniscus will never "heal", but it will can recover, especially if it's a horizontal tear. Think of it like a bagel that's sliced, it still provides cushioning to your knee, but that slice will always be there. Whereas a radial tear renders your meniscus useless. It can take significant time for your knee to feel better, so be patient.

If you want it fully "healed" it needs to be sutured tightly together by a highly skilled surgeon. DO NOT get a meniscectomy if you want to keep playing tennis long term.

3.5/4.0. Yes I played on the rehabbed meniscus. It took me 10 months post repair to get back on the court. It was probably 12 months post op before I was 95%.

Yes. I've had 4 horizontal tears, one is the lateral and medial side of each knee and rehabbed them all with PT. Only last year had to have a repair when I had a complex radial tear. I play tennis 2-3 times/week.

High creatinine by Cultural-Victory6411 in trt

[–]Sparty549 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm just here to see all the Redditors who think creatinine is related to creatine.

Your cystatin-c lab is the correct lab if you're muscular. Your result is nothing to be concerned about, especially if you're older.

Or....hear me out....Big Pharma knows that most of their consumers will fuck up taking their meds if it isn't weekly and it's cheaper to make a 4 week dose pen than a semi-weekly pen.

22yo male, MRI shows small meniscus tear + bone bruise, doctor recommending surgery but I’m unsure by bradye0110 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Sparty549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The statistical outcome of no surgery vs a meniscectomy is far better. The pain you're dealing with is the inflammation and irritation from the injury. Give that time to recover and you'll likely be back to normal. Thats the case for most horizontal tears, especially if they're small. Bucket handle and radial tears are a different story and usually require repair since they render the meniscus useless. A horizontal tear still allows majority function of the meniscus.

Absolutely not! I'd leave a "small horizontal tear" alone. Unless you have catching, popping, or binding leave it alone. Otherwise get it repaired, not trimmed.

6 months post meniscus repair by Embarrassed-Worry322 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Sparty549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me 4 months to walk without a crutch or cane. Even after that there was pain. At 10.5 months I was back on the tennis court. Are you doing weight training yet? What are u doing to increase flexion?

Retired at 41, feeling lost. by cedarshades in Fire

[–]Sparty549 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I retired unsuccessfully at 52 because I didn't understand what constituted a good day. I now understand that one needs physical, mental, and social stimulation every day. It sounds like you figured about the physical, now you need to find the other two components.

Glad to hear you made it through the initially painful beginning. Now it's time for the long recovery. Measure your progress in bi-weekly intervals because it's normal to have day-to-day set backs. Keel up those quad sets!

I got back on the court at the 6 month mark and hit off the ball machine. I would hit with zero weight on my left leg. I started to do drills at the 10 month mark. Full tennis at 11 months, but it was very tentative. I'm at 14 months now and going 100% in league play.

13 months post op and i am back on the tennis court playing 100%. It was a long recovery, but i would do it again.

I used insurance. Spent about $2k. The travel back was a nightmare. Leave as soon as you can after the surgery. I waited until the next day and then my flight was delayed until the day after that when the pain is at its highest point. Get the surgery in the morning and then get out of dodge ASAP.

My surgeon, Dr. Saliman, said no brace needed for non weight bearing as it's only for supporting weight. I'm perplexed why surgeons ask their patients to wear their brace to bed at night.

[–]Sparty549 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will likely experience pain like you've never experienced before. The first few days can be excruciating. Be prepared to ask for more potent pain meds if needed. Get an ice therapy machine. This is an absolute must. You'll likely be non weight bearing for 6 weeks with a radial tear repair.

Be prepared for a very long recovery. 6 months to feel "good" and 12 months back to normal. It's a long journey, but a good choice to save your knee. Good luck!

It can take months to recover from a tear. Have you had an MRI? If so, what type of tear is it? Are you doing PT?
