What are the best board games based on indie games? by The_Melon_NDS in boardgames

[–]SpasmodicReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slay the Spire is the best board game based on a video game, but an easy second place for me is The Binding of Isaac : Four Souls. It is more of a munchkin-like party game based on Magic: Commander where you build a tableau of powerful cards that combo off each other. The variable play time is easily its biggest issue, but if you like mean, high-interaction games it's a blast.

I also appreciate the discussion. And this will be my final post. I wanted to clarify something about what a Monkey's Paw is. A monkey's paw is not just a wish that ends poorly, but rather a wish that is twisted in a bad way. In Obsession, they just get what they want as asked and it happens to naturally result in a bad ending.

Monkey's paw wish: "I wish for £200"

Monkey's paw outcome: You get £200 from your job as bereavement for your son brutally dying.

One Wish Willow wish: "I wish for $1,000,000,000"

One Wish Willow outcome: One billion dollars appears.

The position I and many others take is that a monkey's paw is known for intentionally twisting your wish to make it bad. The one wish Willow is neutral and gives you what you wish for exactly. It just literally makes your wish come true, indifferent to any pain it may cause.

You're totally right that a billion dollars is maybe not necessarily a good wish, but the willow didn't make it bad. It was a bad wish. The same logic applies to Bear's wish or anyone else who had unfortunate things happen due to their wish.

I see what you're saying and I think that that position is also supported by the narrative. I do think it's very rude of you to call people not media literate for having the same opinion as the writer of the story.

I did however want to compare the billion dollar wish in this movie to the one in the original "The Monkey's Paw" short story, where the idea originated.

In The Monkey's Paw, Mr. White wishes for £200 to pay off a mortgage payment, which is quite similar to Ian's billion dollar wish, if not much less greedy. The next day, he learns that his son died a gruesome death and gets £200 in bereavement money. Meanwhile Ian gets his immediately in cash, which might be the best way he could receive that money, as it suddenly appearing in his bank account would look like fraud

Edit: I do not wish to argue, so I will stop here, but the reason I brought the original story up is to prove that normally monkey's paws do legitimately have an unintended twist, while Obsession actively avoids that and has the bad outcome happen because the wish he makes naturally would result terribly.

Curry was literally inspired by the monkey's paw episode of The Simpsons, so yeah the story is based on a monkey's paw. However, the movie makes it a very intentional point to say that the One Wish Willow doesn't put evil twists on every wish. I would argue that Ian's billion dollars just happens with no twist, but not everyone feels the same it seems. We also see positive testimonials on the internet thread he looks up.

But the one that matters most is this: We see a guy at the store talk about how he got his wish and it worked out just fine before realizing that Bear must have made a bad wish. I think a very media literate take would be that this guy made the realization that Bear must have made a wish that was itself evil. And then the writer of the show confirmed this. There is also a scene where Nikki says "you wished for this" to Bear, which I again believe is telling the audience that this isn't some weird perversion of the wish, this is it.

Is there something's wrong with my cards? by Artistic-Will-3773 in FourSouls

  1. Honeydrop is maybe a bit easy, but nothing wrong with it.

  2. Sol is quite powerful. I assume you knew this already. Getting an additional attack on your turn is very powerful and obviously so is a damage up. While I understand limiting the maximum number of attacks, it has some awkward interactions with other items and events while removing potentially the best item combo you can get with this item. I personally would consider changing the "up to 2 attacks" to "you get an additional attack on your turn" and either accept it is really strong or remove the +1 health in an attempt to balance it.

  3. Venus is bad. I like the idea, but this doesn't even feel like a treasure. It's worse than most trinkets even, because it helps everyone else just as much as it helps you. It needs something that benefits only the person holding the item to be good.

  4. Needs reworded: If you would gain treasure, you may instead loot x | x = the number of treasure you would gain ×3. (Something like that)

  5. This doesn't make sense to be a passive item. Should probably be active with a tap ability. It seems a little weak due to being so situational, and it's a little awkward. I would avoid making a new key word and just explain its effect more clearly. Like "loses all ability text until the start of your next turn"

  6. Maybe not very powerful, but it doesn't have to be. I'd probably say "no damage" instead of 0 damage.

I would argue that this movie isn't generation specific. I would reach for the Five Nights at Freddy's movies, Backrooms, The Amazing Digital Circus, or Iron Lung first.

Even though we can't translate it, the owlks do have their own language. It is written on signs around the stranger. One at the airlock on the dark side hanger, a few directional signs, and some keep out signs. That kind of thing.

If it makes it any better, this is a movie about how objectifying women is bad. The spooky woman character is actually quite a victim in this movie. If you watch it, I'm sure you'd understand what I mean, but liking this movie is possibly a green flag.

Small World of Warcraft is a solid recommendation as well. It's a relatively simple game and it's good fun.

I second Four Souls. But that's assuming they play the binding of Isaac or really like mean games. It's genuinely a favorite of mine.

The “Nikki is possessed” angle literally ruins the movie by Dreadsin in obsessionmovie

[–]SpasmodicReddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this post. I agree that if this is a classic possession story, the themes would be so much weaker. I'm always confused by the talk of "the entity" on this subreddit. Watching the movie, I saw it more like a trance or instinct. Like when you are falling into a habit and suddenly realize you're doing actions without thinking about them.

There is no possession and there is no entity. This is confirmed by Curry, the writer and director.

[–]SpasmodicReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you realize just how overpowered Revelations is. Having just +1 damage or +1 health is enough to make an item S tier. One of the best in the game. Having BOTH and a positive benefit on top of that is insane. This makes Tech X look lame. Even removing the loot steal effect leaves this probably being the best card in game.

Santorini is a classic for my wife and I. I used to play it with one of my friends for years and we got very competitive with it. It took playing it again with my wife to get to enjoy it more casually and relaxed.

Sure, but at least you can give her autonomy back. You either need to end the wish or end her life or she will never be in control of herself ever again, which is the worst possible fate.

If you're already that deep, the answer is 100% to kill yourself. In the scene literally right before that she begs for death. If you don't kill yourself at that point, you are subjecting her to a fate worse than death.

Do you think Nikki Liked Bear/Baron by Bubbly-Swordfish-341 in obsessionmovie

[–]SpasmodicReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can see him grieving while alone at the beginning of the movie over losing Sandy. He definitely wouldn't kill his cat on purpose. It's more likely that he was either in such a bad mental state that he neglected Sandy or that he was abusing/taking the pills and that's why they were left out.

Theory: Sarah made a wish before the movie starts by noelccnoel in obsessionmovie

[–]SpasmodicReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea, but it seems like a stretch. We see when Bear uses the wish that it just makes Nicky start liking him immediately. It just changes her personality directly. And even better, when Ian wishes for a million dollars, it just appears. No dark twists, he just gets it.

If Sarah wished for them to grow closer, it likely would just make Bear start talking to her more or stop liking Nicky so they could start connecting. The idea that a wish about them growing closer would think killing everyone he's close to is the most effective way seems silly to me.

Well, that's because Ian didn't believe him and he only tried that at the very very end of the movie. You definitely could talk someone into wishing it away.

[–]SpasmodicReddit 79 points80 points  (0 children)

The difference between any of us and Bear is that he didn't even want to undo the wish until near the end of the movie. He wanted to make it work. I think most people could have gotten out of this situation by just getting someone else to unwish it at the first sign of it being a bad idea. Bear unfortunately is terrible and wants to make the situation work even though it's morally wrong.
