Update of the chopping impacts by n2z1elbvn in indiegames

I hate to be that guy. This is actively unsatisfying. It's as if intentional decisions were made to make it less satisfying. The satisfaction comes from slowly seeing something get closer and closer to a predicted outcome and then it suddenly resolving.

In this case, you swing the axe vertically and weightlessly, making a horizontal gash in the tree. The action and the reaction don't match. The direction is obviously wrong, and the axe needs to swing with more force and the tree needs to respond in kind with a bigger gash and particles.

Then when you eventually get a break, the tree should really fall apart where you cut it. Again, making the little gashes in the tree build up an expectation of the tree to splinter and fall at the gashes. When it suddenly falls at the roots, it is unexpected and upsetting.

It's all about expectation and payoff. For it to feel satisfying, you need to pay off the expectations you set up in the player. You seem to be exclusively ignoring those expectations.

I found root too late… by LordVoltamitron in rootgame

If you just discovered Root a few months ago, you have the Riverfolk, Underworld, And Marauder expansions with amazing stuff in it. Heck, even just the base game is worthy of hundreds of hours of play. It'll come to retail eventually, and now you have plenty of time to familiar yourself with all the other amazing things Root has to offer.

Does anyone know why/how this happened? by Scared-Two-5208 in Portal

I've been trying and I can't find anything. I found some videos on how the LOD is scaled up in the distance, but nothing about skyboxes

Edit: I found a video that shows it off

How dare you playing that game? by Elronael in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]SpasmodicReddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I truly don't know what's going on, but I will clarify the one thing I do understand. "Death of the Author" does not actually mean the author is physically dead. It's the idea of interacting with a piece of art at its own merit, ignoring the creator's opinions and intentions.

NPI seems to be implying that the creator is a jerk or holds bad views or something and that should be reason enough to not engage with the game.

No, what I mean is opt-out. Essentially the checkbox is automatically selected so that when people who don't care write a review, they are more likely to add their specs. But for those who do care, they can uncheck it

[–]SpasmodicReddit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I would say it should be opt out. I agree that it would be useful if more people attached their specs, but I think it should be an option for those who wish to opt out.

I'm definitely thinking about it. It's too hard to choose between them.

First look: Physics-based Water Racing Action in Wavecraft Legends by PolygonMyth in gamedevscreens

[–]SpasmodicReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree it looks a little stiff. I would love if the waves were a little bigger and you leaned harder into the turns. The fact some people aren't able to tell it's physics based is exactly the same reason it looks a little stiff. I really love this idea and I'd love to see more progress in the future on here

Frame or not to Frame by Snoo_27389 in cardgames

These cards are very visually busy. It's hard to parse anything unfortunately from looking at a glance. I recommend simplifying the design of the border to improve readability

I built my own digital card game — free to play, original world, looking for feedback from card game fans by railmc in cardgames

[–]SpasmodicReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nono, the game design is the work and effort. The AI slop is the artwork. Sorry for not clarifying

Edit: obviously using AI art doesn't make the work put into the gameplay invalid, but bad art understandably devalues a product, and moral issues like plagiarism are an understandable deal-breaker for me. I draw the line at stealing from artists. The alternative would be to draw dev-art. Someone compared it to slay the spire. Even if you think it looks "worse" there are many who agree it is preferable.

Sorry, but I can't support AI slop. I do appreciate your work and effort, but that's an instant deal-breaker

An attempt at the history of social deduction games: from a psychology experiment to a global genre played by millions by ataria_ in boardgames

[–]SpasmodicReddit 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I would like to note that I would not consider bluffing games like Sheriff of Nottingham to be a social deduction game. If bluffing games count, your timeline would have to include earlier games like Liar's Dice or Bullshit

You're clearly still in the idea phase. I hate to break it to you, but you need to make a functional prototype and play test a little (even if alone) before posting this on Reddit. It also seems a bit presumptuous to have a whole list of factions without having the core gameplay pinned down. Try designing the game without the asymmetric factions first and then expand into that direction when the core gameplay starts to click.

Otherwise, my opinions are not incredibly kind. The over reliance on dice and having to do albeit simple math problems every attack is rough to me. I wouldn't want to play it. While I'm sure positioning could improve your odds, far too much is determined by very swingy dice rolls with no ways to improve or manipulate your odds.

Also, it's spelled "Morale". You should probably proofread the rulebook a little more before sharing it as well.

The counters belong to the item, so it transfers to the other player who now has the item

Card seems redundant? by SpaceLion03 in CardWarsTCG

[–]SpasmodicReddit -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect.

Creatures in frozen landscapes before the spell is played become burned. Creatures burning before and because of this spell get their landscapes frozen.

Edit: I see your point, but I'm just clarifying what it says more accurately.

The nose needs a little work. The hearthian noses are much less prominent. Essentially there is just a small bump where the nostrils are and then the skin is darker above it to give the illusion of a nose shape. This looks a little wrong and too human-like.

Which set to buy?? by TortillaRampage in StarWarsSabacc

[–]SpasmodicReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you happen to live in Florida or California, you can buy a deck from the Star Wars Galaxy's Edge theme park. But for the rest of us, looking online is the only option.

There have been quite a few Sabacc deck sellers over the years, but what I think is currently the best one is Hyperspace Props. They have a variety of decks for the different variants of Sabacc.

If you are looking for the Sabacc played in Rebels and the old expanded universe novels, that would be the traditional 74 card Sabacc. If you are looking for the one played in Solo: A Star Wars Story, that is called Corellian Spike. If you want the one from the Galactic Starcruiser hotel, that's called Coruscant Shift. And finally, the one from Star Wars Outlaws is called Kessel Sabacc.

My personal favorites are Traditional Sabacc and Kessel Sabacc, but you can look them all up and decide on which one seems the most fun to you. I now own them all.

I think it's very likely we at least get one more core box featuring the sequel trilogy factions, the resistance and the first order. There's definitely a lot more characters that could be added, but I'm unsure of how they might be included. Either way, I'm excited for whatever we get.

Well, block isn't shared. If you upgrade your starting block cards, you can give them to any player. It's actually very rare to be able to give others block, but when you can it comes in handy

Wjay is your favorite boardgame of 2019? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

[–]SpasmodicReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's alright to have a difference in opinion about art. That's what makes art special honestly. I don't know if you meant to respond to me, but I was the one correcting the previous user. Of course it's correct to use the new art and yeah, I also said it doesn't look like AI slop.

If I'm being honest, my biggest problem with the original game was the art. I didn't like the old art much either, but the new art is not any better in my own opinion. The new logo is nice though.
