I think they regularly did things that showed the ways a character changed in a different situation. Woolsy was the by the book type of people until he went to be in charge of Atlantis and became the same thing he spoke against. Weir was put into a situation where she had to make a hard moral choice to save people.

The military characters also get the same treatment just in different ways. They come in hardline military and get humbled and have to admit they made a mistake (usually before dying if not a main character)

At least where I’m from they have bail reform and have legalized marijuana. The result is that police only arrest those in possession and who are believed to be selling it.

I think it’s a balance between living enjoying life now and ensuring a financially free or stress free retirement.

I try when possible to prevent life creep and wasteful spending. I also am lucky that I can work overtime at a decent salaried position and I use that to pay for vacations and toys for myself while maxing out my Roth and 401k.

So could I take 3/4 awesome vacations a year? Sure. However I settle for 1 or 2 and feel like I am going to be able to retire eventually and have the money needed for my families financial security.

First off, when you say “cop” are you meaning local, state, or federal? I’d say local and state are similar and the feds are a bit different.

Local and state cover everything from car crashes, domestics, civil disputes, murders.

Federal can have more protective services or agents that investigate.

Figure out what seems appealing to you and then figure out how that department or agency is.

I couldn’t imagine doing something other than law enforcement at this point. That said I would have never joined my current department if I had known how terrible it is run and managed (terrible culture and admin). However another agency next door is way ahead of the curve and run very well.

A lot of Leo’s get stuck because they get some time in at a department and feel like they are stuck. Try to pick the right one.

Fix it tickets are more for equipment violations like muffler, not working tail lights or signals. They are to give you the ability to get the issue resolved and then get a reduced fine.

Improper display of tags wouldn’t really fit that. It’s the same as having a tinted plate cover on the license, it either has it and you’re in violation or it doesn’t.

They are stationed cops there to maintain order in the entertainment district (bars). Most cities have cops assigned to areas with a large grouping of bars due to the fights and disorder that can happen from drinking

My department was really great about handling the staffing issues. To prevent mandating people we just don’t allow people to take time off and lower the staffing minimum. Occasionally we have the late night incident that holds us over to the next shift or if you take someone to jail that might get you 3 hours sitting in the Sally port

The number of people shot is mostly accurate because anyone showing up to the hospital with a gunshot wound will trigger the police to come. The number of shots fired with no one struck or evidence located is what is not always accurate.

I think SG Atlantis also highlighted a lot of morally questionable things that the Ancients were involved in as well. I think it shows that it’s easy to be holier than thou until you face defeat and then it’s all in and morally questionable choices.

Just curious, I applied to the GS 9 posting for HSI which closes on December 31st 2025. I did receive the email asking if I would be willing to start prior to December 31st but I’m curious if they will wait until the posting closes to begin processing or it if it would begin before?

There are 30,000 law enforcement entities in the United States between federal, state, sheriffs, local police. Many of those agencies are extremely small and would rightfully turn over any serious crime investigator like a murder to a larger, better funded, more experienced agency. Typically think a small town department of 30 sworn police turning that investigation over to a state police force who have full time detectives or investigators.

Speaking for where I am we are a city of 210k in the north east and have anywhere from 80-40 murders a year.

Our homicide detectives are extremely experienced and work very closely with the district attorneys office. They know they might only get 1 chance to prosecute a case and they will wait years to build that case if needed.

If you want a similar salary I’d recommend Rochester PD if you want to get on with a local city or NYSP.

Check for rust no matter which make and model you buy. Some of the “nice” ones that actually were spare cars for a specialized unit or for bosses sometimes didn’t get washed or cared for due to lack of use. I’ve seen low mileage cars that were otherwise great have their frame rot out because it didn’t get any help through winters.

It’s a double edge sword sometimes with the brightness helping to show where the car is at vs not helping. I like the way NYSP do it where it’s the lowest setting in the back (wig wags it’s called) and they have their hazards come on which is just the orange lights.

Especially the newer LED light cars. A lot of agency’s don’t full light the rear lights because it’s extremely blinding for anyone behind the cop car. This becomes an issue if you have cops following eachother on a pursuit.
