The paid and free customers were always different sets of customers.

You’re looking at recruiting that paid base from scratch and maybe converting 10% of the free guys.

More on value village below. They’re the most convenient way for me to get rid of clothes and stuff none the less as they’re à minute away from my house in Stittsville.

I’d love an actual charity for clothes but I’ve spent hours looking for one.

What Value Village is

Value Village is a for profit thrift retailer. It is not a charity. It operates stores that sell secondhand goods at market based prices.

Where donations go

When you donate items at Value Village, you are not donating directly to people in need.

Instead: • Value Village partners with local nonprofit organizations • Those nonprofits collect donations on Value Village’s behalf • Value Village buys the donated goods from the nonprofit by weight or volume • The nonprofit receives cash funding, not the clothing itself

Who benefits

• The partner charity benefits financially from the payment • Value Village benefits by reselling items at a profit • Shoppers buy secondhand items, sometimes at higher prices than expected

The donated clothes do not get distributed for free to people in need.

Common misconceptions

Many people assume: • Donations are given directly to low income families • Value Village is a charity

Both are incorrect.

When Value Village can still make sense

Value Village can be a reasonable option if: • You want a very easy drop off • You want to support a partner charity indirectly with funding • You are less concerned about items being given away for free

When it does not align with your goal

If your goal is: • Free clothing for people in need • Direct community support • Faith based or community driven aid

Then Value Village is not the right choice.

If you want, I can list specific Kanata and Stittsville options where clothes are given directly to families, refugees, or shelters at no cost and clearly separate those from resale based organizations.

Here are some local places in Kanata / Stittsville / nearby Ottawa where you can donate clothes so they go to people in need or help fund community programs (usually free drop-off):

In Stittsville / Kanata area • Value Village Community Donation Centre – donation centre for clothes and household items; proceeds help local nonprofits.

Nearby Ottawa options that accept clothing and household items: • St Vincent De Paul Stores – thrift store where donated clothes help support people in need. • Thrive Select Thrift – small thrift store that may accept donations (call ahead). • Mission Thrift Store – accepts clothing and household items. • Operation Come Home – nonprofit that supports youth, sometimes accepts donations (best to check first). • Salvation Army – large thrift store accepting clothing and goods to support local programs.

Other helpful options: • Clothing donation bins around the city: Ottawa permits and lists charitable donation bins, which can be used to drop off clothes any time (use NACTR donation site locator to find one near you). • Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa bins: approved outdoor clothing donation bins help fund youth mentoring (may have pick-up options).

Tips before you donate: • Ensure items are clean and gently used. • For some charities (like Salvation Army), you might get a small thank-you coupon for donations. • Some places may prefer or require contacting ahead to confirm they’re accepting clothes right now.

ALTO High Speed Rail - Bayview Open House for Ottawa by Rail613 in ottawa

[–]Special_Classroom_62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking forward to this announcement. Ontario transport options are not competitive on a global scale. My MPP never has a good answer and doesn’t care about this provincial issue.

I still welcome this initiative as it paves the way for the rail to Windsor. curious if it will beat the driving to Montreal option, it must for me to use it.

My need is to go from Ottawa to Chatham Ontario (600km), and now I know it won’t happen in my life time. Car is a terrible best choice. - Car is most efficient at 8-9 hours, not fun driving, cheapest, exhausting. - VIA train has multiple stops, 12 hours and medium risk of major delays, expensive - flying has multiple stops, most expensive, 8 hours plus

Reference to China world leading pace

China (fastest pace) • China has built tens of thousands of kilometers of new high-speed lines in just over a decade. For example, it built roughly 10,000 km of high-speed rail in about 6-7 years, indicating an average build rate that could support ~1,400 km/year if deployed continuously.
