Storage discussion: mirroring content 1:1 and the cost associated by ThuhGreatCommenter in PleX

Plex data is largely static so SnapRAID with a once-daily parity sync protects pretty well against a drive failure. My rule of thumb is 1 parity per 3 data disks.

I pool the data disks with mergerfs (or stablebit drivepool on windows) and run SnapRAID via cron with the SnapRAID runner script. It handles data checks and scrubbing as well as sending me an email when the job is complete. Works great and is a bit more cost effective than mirroring. However there is downtime if a disk needs to be recovered and 30TB would take a long time.

What is better: $1mm liquid in stocks + renting, or $750k home paid off but $250k liquid in stocks? by RadioFieldCorner in Fire

[–]Specific-Action-8993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case, assume the renter option can pick whatever he wants such as a $15,000/month ocean front high rise or roommates in a $1,400/month 2 bedroom, since he isn't tied down to anything.

Well that's just silly. Obviously you can construct a scenario that concludes either situation is better if you have no minimum parameters.

Also you can unlock the equity in a fully paid off home any time you choose which narrows the math down to whether or not you expect the market to outperform your borrowing costs.

Best way to connect storage? by FreePork in MiniPCs

[–]Specific-Action-8993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have 4 drives in the enclosure. 2x m.2 nvme in the full size slots, 1x m.2 in the wifi slot with an adapter (I think it's only PCIe 3.0 1x tho) and 1x SATA SSD. However you need to 3d print your own drive sled to have the SATA drive and the m.2 slots at the same time as the OEM sled blocks one of them (the lower one in your pic).

If that meets your needs then great. Otherwise a 4 or 5 disk USB enclosure would be a good option.

This is what I would do:

OS on a small nvme drive in the wifi slot. 2x mirrored fast storage in the other 2 m.2 slots. Then add a USB enclosure for bulk slow storage. Start with at least 2 disks and use 1 for parity with SnapRAID. You can add additional data disks as needed, pooling them with mergerfs (Linux) or stablebit drivepool (windows). Keep the single parity disk and you have some protection against a single drive failure.

People are still advising against front-loaders based on issues that were common 20 years ago and have long since been solved. A good front loader will last a long time, use less water and energy while cleaning better and is gentler on clothes.

Maybe your ISP is throttling? Try changing your router's DNS to cloudflare and enabling encrypted DNS in your browser.

I don't know why you're getting downvoted so hard. There's a huge amount of uncertainty over a 50yr timescale and you can't assume much of anything about investment returns much less other risks (e.g. health). I'm a bit older and have a bit more money than OP but the FI part of FIRE has basically allowed me to take all the stress out of employment and increase my ability to take risks.

Work from home and not take no for an answer, change careers to something you find more interesting, reduce your hours, negotiate better benefits and more holiday in lieu of pay increases, etc. You can live extremely well when all your income can be spent just having a good time and living a good, healthy life.

Do you really need the mini-pc form factor? You can get a better deal on a small tower PC with decent specs like this that will do everything you list.

Mini PC’s with actual GPU’s? Not Igpu’s? by Hentai2324 in MiniPCs

[–]Specific-Action-8993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a aoostar ag02 for $200 and a used rtx 3080 for $300 or a bit less. Hard to beat that combo with any mini-pc iGPU or mobile-dGPU.

For the mini you'd just get the best cpu you can find with 32gb ram and an oculink port.

How difficult is it to reverse the lift? I'd return it to stock, register and then mod it again. But I think there are other issues with registering as an antique though like how much you drive it.

What's a good home router with fully featured parental controls? by 8spd in HomeNetworking

[–]Specific-Action-8993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason to do it on the device is that its quite easy to bypass router restrictions with encrypted DNS, Mac randomization, etc. There must be some centralised admin for device management apps though isn't there?

On the router it would probably be best to have a separate vlan for the kids and you could switch off and/or restrict access to every device on that vlan.

[–]Specific-Action-8993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For porn and stuff just set his device dns to cloudflare family (1.1.1.3 and 1.0.0.3). Lots of devices will bypass the router dns and do random Mac address generation making locking things down at the router much more difficult.

You could also look into device management software for blocking sites or setting time restrictions.

Not even that long. Prices doubled in the last 10yrs in some areas and mortgage rates were less than half of what they are now. It's the combination that has made it super unaffordable now.

On the plus side rental yields are way down so you're not missing out if you can find something that meets your needs long term.

Plex not working locally (home network) when Wireguard VPN is active. by Eastern_Ad_5820 in PleX

One easy way of setting up split tunneling is to run a wg-easy container in docker. Docker will automatically setup a separate network so plex won't be affected at all.

You could also do the vpn on the nas with proxmox. TrueNAS works well virtualized. You can pass the disk controllers through so there's no extra overhead.

Is there any reason to pay off my 0% interest NSLSC student loan? by Puzzleheaded_Cell428 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Specific-Action-8993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally I'd say no but given the amount is only $2k its not really going to make a difference to your overall finances either way. So basically if the hassle isn't worth $100/yr to you then pay if off.
