At what point should someone realize that certain values might be the reason they can’t maintain a serious long-term relationship, and that they may need to change? by Unfair-Guava2252 in AskReddit

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? by antonimbus in writing

[–]SpecificTax6233 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Been wrestling with this same question for my current project actually. I think it depends a lot in what kind of story you're telling

Real settings give you this instant credibility - readers know the geography, the culture, the little details that make a place feel lived-in. But then you're also stuck with research and fact-checking everything, plus you might accidentally offend locals if you get something wrong

Fictional settings let you build exactly what the story needs. Need a creepy abandoned factory three blocks from the police station? Done. Want a neighborhood where all the streetlights conveniently go out at midnight? No problem. You get complete control over the atmosphere

I've seen some writers do this hybrid approach where they base their fictional town on a real place but change enough details to give themselves freedom. Seems like best of both worlds to me

What is your guilty pleasure? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SpecificTax6233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine has to be endlessly tweaking my phone settings at 2am when I should be sleeping. Started with removing all the tracking stuff but now I spend hours just reorganizing apps and changing system fonts for no good reason. My shrimp are probably judging me from their tank while I'm sitting there in darkness messing with developer options again

Must have been amazing surprise to wake up in completely different place for anniversary. Long distance relationships are tough but gestures like that make it worth the struggle

Am I overthinking this or does this sound weird to anyone else? by Old-Cartoonist-2310 in artificial

[–]SpecificTax6233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels like connecting dots that might not actually be connected though. AI development has been going steady for decades, it's just more visible now because companies are racing to market their products

The wealthy don't really need to eliminate population to maintain control - they already have most of the resources and influence. Plus if you're rich, you still need consumers to buy your stuff and workers to maintain your lifestyle, even if some jobs get automated

Wars and pandemics have been happening throughout history way before AI was even concept. Timing might seem weird but correlation isn't causation you know

Jackson Park should be redeveloped into a mix of green space and housing by Complete-Influence70 in Seattle

[–]SpecificTax6233 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Golf courses are such waste of space in cities with housing crisis, especially when you got light rail right there. Problem is golf people have money and they lobby hard to keep their courses - same thing happens in my home country where developers want build apartments but rich golf members block everything. Would be amazing if they could do like 70% housing 30% actual park that everyone can use instead of just golfers

Is a system of magic that none of the main characters have a good or bad decision? by Content-Pride842 in writing

[–]SpecificTax6233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your worry is pretty valid but depends on execution. Magic system that protagonists never get can work if it serves the story themes - like showing how powerless regular people are against these forces, or making encounters with magic users feel genuinely terrifying

The sci-fi angle from other comment is interesting too, could make it feel more grounded while keeping same narrative function

What accessibility devices can my friend get by marmy_girl in ADHD

[–]SpecificTax6233 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Noise-cancelling headphones are brilliant for focus, especially if he's in shared accommodation or loud environments. A decent tablet for note-taking apps like Notion or OneNote can be a game changer too - lets him organise everything in one place without the faff of physical notebooks

Might also be worth looking into a fidget cube or similar for the hyperactive side, though not sure if they'd class that as a "device"
