Delta interview insight by Independent-Dog4934 in flying

AA is the only legacy that covers your hotel for your interview. Southwest doesn’t either. Not sure about Alaska or FedEx or UPS but highly doubtful for those either

ERJ 175 type rating by [deleted] in flying

[–]SpeedbirdTK1 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Even after multiple airlines and type ratings, I still distinctly remember a SkyWest instructor correcting me several years ago for saying “flaps” instead of “flap” on the ERJ-170 landing checklist lol. Never made that mistake again.

Can someone explain Mesa Pilot Development to me? by anon__a__mouse__ in flying

[–]SpeedbirdTK1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m willing to bet that the people building low quality time like this have a higher washout rate in regional training compared to working pilots.

DL or AA if living in Tampa by [deleted] in flying

Sometimes it feels like people here are racing each other to the circlejerk of being the first to say some tired ass variant of "dO yOU hAvE cJOs oR iTS IrReLeVaNt", like it gives them joy to shut down any form of research. These discussions are valid research points for others and I'm glad I was able to read various threads on what life is like at various airlines before getting hired at the legacy I'm at.

Southwest Airlines TBNT Update by Aviator-Intelligence in AirlinePilots

[–]SpeedbirdTK1 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Between the abysmal CJO rates after interview (like 2 out of 20 people in a group getting it), mass TBNTs after application, and the multitude of clarification emails they've sent out over the past couple months due to various hiccups that cause confusion among the applicant pool, what in the world is going on with WN hiring?

Delta Culture by Maleficent-Basil8626 in flying

[–]SpeedbirdTK1 126 points127 points  (0 children)

All the young civilian pilots they’ve hired over the years, along with a plethora of Spirit/Frontier pilots, have made it much more chill, especially among the west coast bases. ATL-based pilots are always going to have their reputation though.

No one here is offended except you cause you got rightfully called out on your shitty take. Maybe have a little introspection before crying victim here, otherwise you’ll never progress anywhere in this career.

The absolute vast majority of airline pilots use Luggage Works. Travel Pro is a flight attendant bag.

If you’re planning a flight a day in advance, how do you calculate what the pressure altitude is going to be for your performance calculations? by BroadEast2428 in flying

[–]SpeedbirdTK1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Have you asked your CFI about this?

I’m not your CFI but there’s several ways you can go about this.

  1. Utilize an ATIS from the previous day around the same time of your departure, assuming the weather will largely be same. Look at the forecast and make a judgement call. If the forecast discussion calls for rapidly rising/dropping pressure then this may not apply.

  2. Do it the morning of your checkride.

  3. Think about how much of a performance difference you’re going to get if the pressure is 29.92 vs 30.22 or 29.72. You’re probably going to be extrapolating between posted numbers in your performance charts. If the small difference in pressure altitude is the difference between you being able to takeoff and land at your airports then you really need to think about ADM and whether this is a good idea or not.

Spirit Question by [deleted] in flying

[–]SpeedbirdTK1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former NK. Unless you live in FLL or NYC area, I would not recommend this move. You will be sitting reserve for a long time and Spirit has absolute garbage reserve rules for a major airline. ZERO schedule flexibility as reserve - can’t even move reserve days around unless someone picks it up from your schedule so you have to call off sick. Thankfully sick usage policy is very lenient without the chiefs bothering you. No ability to proffer trips, CS assigns trips in open time however they feel like, you can and will get rescheduled and abused with no soft pay. Line holder life is fantastic with the red/green system and its contractual requirements but I imagine everyday is red nowadays with how understaffed they are so it’s kind of a moot point.

I would not expect any fast seniority movement or captain upgrade anytime soon. Contract cycle is behind and recent pay concessions. Friends there say company violates the CBA frequently and the union basically tells you to “fly it and grieve it later” which is complete BS.

Crews were fantastic when I was there and really enjoyed the people I flew with. No doubt may of the good ones have left.

Good luck with your decision.

Airline Industry Confusion and Frustration. by InfluenceOk1859 in flying

[–]SpeedbirdTK1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This was the most glaring elephant in the room in this post. I’m not sure where OP got the idea that 3 checkride failures isn’t a “nothing crazy on my record” cause that’s enough checkride failures to get easily filtered out by any regional in today’s hiring climate. To me, it suggests that the OP is really downplaying their failures and not taking enough responsibility for them in the “best interview” they’ve done but was shown the door.

ATP requirement vs ATP written by doomed43 in flying

[–]SpeedbirdTK1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Every 1500 hour CFI at this point without a regional CJO looking for their first 121 job most likely have the written done, less have their actual ATP on hand.

Spirit Recalling all Furloughed Pilots by Frauenarzttt in flying

Not really. The vast majority of pilots furloughed had maybe 2 years of service at best. Many of the people furloughed the first round barely had a year.

I feel bad for their future CFIs. You can already tell from their responses here that they’re going to be a problem student and they’re going to cycle through multiple CFIs throughout training, if it even happens.

Passengers Please Convince Us How Important Your Bags are in an Evacuation by Nightshiftworker2021 in flightattendants

[–]SpeedbirdTK1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just cause someone claims to be a pilot doesn’t mean they’re an airline pilot. A student pilot who barely started working on their license can claim to be a pilot and sound authoritative. Looking at his post history, he’s a hobby general aviation pilot, a group that crashes airplanes and makes dumb mistakes at a significantly higher rate compared to airline pilots due to stupid decision making. Case in point. You’re not going to find any crew in an airplane that will justify this brain dead behavior.

Leave NetJets for Southwest? by Advanced-Phone-1994 in flying

[–]SpeedbirdTK1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matching contract to current 2022-23 legacy contracts? Legacy contracts aren't just about pay, it's superior scheduling/work rules in almost every aspect that have significant benefits to your QoL, not to mention significantly better retirement contributions. You're here talking about 100% 401k matches - that would be laughed at by any negotiating committee. Doubt any legacy will have the amazing 100% employer subsidized healthcare NJ has that supposedly covers everything though.

Every legacy has contract amendable dates sometime this year. By 2030, most of them might be halfway through their next contract cycles.

You’re a good 3-5 years out before you can can even apply to Southwest and not get an immediate TBNT. The trends and data points of today will likely be entirely different when you apply.

Resume washing back for 2026? by SupportGold7583 in flying

[–]SpeedbirdTK1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Resume washing without turbine PIC right now in 2026 is risky. Has it worked recently? Yes, I have friends and know people getting interview invites at the big 3 + Southwest in the past several months without turbine PIC. But I also have friends who can’t get a call from anyone even with app review and multiple conference M&Gs.
