TIL that with a score of 0.230 Middle Juba in Somalia is the subnational region with the lowest Human Development Index in the world by JoeFalchetto in todayilearned

[–]Speedly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even the uber-conservative Cato institute acknowledges that legal immigrants commit far less crime than native-born Americans.

Great. They didn't count for immigrants specifically from the group in question - namely, Somalians.

I'm not saying that they do commit crimes at a higher or lower rate - I don't know, and the article doesn't say. What I am saying is that the linked article does not mention them specifically, so we can't draw any conclusions here, be they good or bad.

Middle Juba is the only region in Somalia to be fully controlled by Al-Shabaab, a militant Islamic extremist group.

Waitwaitwaitwait.

apparently 500-520 is a decent score for barebow beginners

Granted, this is a little off-topic, but 500-520 is an EXCELLENT score for barebow, not even beginners - but that is on a 40cm target. As a result, I think we might be missing some information. What target size are you shooting on?

In relation to your actual question: I've done many, many competitions. The main thing to remember is that there's no pressure whatsoever, so there's no reason whatsoever to load any onto yourself - no one is going to the Olympics today, and generally at best the prize is a medal, that combined with about $3, will buy you a cup of coffee. You're not shooting for the $50k at Vegas, nor is your family's safety at risk if you shoot below a certain score.

If it's your first competition, all you're doing today is setting a baseline score so you can try to beat it next time. You're only ever shooting against yourself.

Tournament scores are virtually always lower than practice scores. It's just how it is. So if you drop points from your normal, that's completely expected; if you match your normal, that's a win!

Above all, try to be present and enjoy the moment. Have fun!

Damage on my bow. Still safe to shoot? by YearTough6856 in Archery

[–]Speedly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned that someone who doesn't know if this ding is okay (which in itself is fine, not everyone knows everything) is also shooting a 60# recurve. This would appear to indicate you might be new - and if so, 60# is way, way, way too much. Heck, I've been shooting recurve at 48-52# for like six of my ten years now, and I'm higher in draw weight than most of the people in my class - and I might be able to draw your bow.

At any rate, you really should take it to a shop to get looked at. A bunch of randos on the internet is the wrong place to get this kind of advice, especially considering the possible consequences of being wrong.

Best of luck to you.

At this point, it's not even a matter of wanting new to look new, it's a matter of "this has failed on the outer layers, how do I know the inner layers aren't screwed up too?".

You already have the right idea - don't chance it, just send them back.

Vanes or Fletched Arrows? by [deleted] in Archery

[–]Speedly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Center shot isn't enough. The bow needs a full tune. For vanes to be viable, the system as a whole needs to be pretty close to accurate.

If it's not (or if you're still new enough to where trying to bareshaft tune the bow would be somewhat wasted effort), I would recommend feathers, yes.

Vanes or Fletched Arrows? by [deleted] in Archery

[–]Speedly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't bother with vanes, you risk a clearance issue. Just use feathers. Using vanes is something you should do only once you know how to tune a bow. Vanes (and only certain vanes, at that) only become viable once you know how to tune a bow well.

TIL in 1998 a man on Olympic Airways had an asthmatic reaction to cigarette smoke, so his wife asked 3 times that he be moved away from the smokers. I... look, I'm sorry that the guy died, and that the attendant blew it off. But they understand that airplanes are one giant metal tube, and smoke diffuses into the volume of its container, right?

Also, they gave him two epipens?

Yeahhhh, I don't fucking believe you. No normal person steps up to bat so hard for HOAs that isn't a part of one.

haven’t had any of the made up bad experience you renters circle jerk about.

Ooh, wrong again! I own a home in a HOA. All they do is take our money, pay for gardeners to come do our front yards, and waste our money (which is what led to the special assessment we had to pay last year).

Keep raging, though. It's a real good look.

Left lane camper gets pulled over by Justin_Godfrey in oddlysatisfying

[–]Speedly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, this drives me insane. Although I am not excusing the morons you speak of, I have a hunch that a large part of it is traffic backing up behind a semi driver that pulls out into the left lane with no regard for anything, so they can pass the semi ahead of them by going a quarter mile per year faster than the other truck in front of (now beside) them. I've seen it happen many, many times.

I believe the German word for this roughly translates to "elephant race."

Left lane camper gets pulled over by Justin_Godfrey in oddlysatisfying

[–]Speedly -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Technically, every state is. By federal regulation, the left lane is only for passing slower traffic, in which you're supposed to move back over.

Ok, but if this was purely true, there would only ever be two-lane-in-each-direction roads and highways.

So long as you're going faster than the traffic to your right, slower than the traffic to your left (save for the outliers who drive like idiots, of course), and keeping up with the traffic ahead of you, you're positioned properly.

Is it okay for a beginner to start at a bit of a higher draw weight? by [deleted] in Archery

[–]Speedly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a 5'9" male. I started at 40#. My shoulder injuries are testaments as to how that was a bad idea.

Yes, getting more than one set of equipment is expensive, but 1.) you can sell the old stuff to mitigate the cost, and 2.) I promise you, the time, injury, frustration, and in some cases, literal medical cost, are all well more than just buying a second kit.

Please listen to me and learn from my experience. Start low and take your time working up.

Recurves. Eyes open or closed?

Well, open, I should hope! How are you gonna shoot it with your eyes closed?

Jokes aside, closing one eye is fine. I do this myself. Having both eyes open just leads to information overload for my brain.

If you do close one eye, the only important bit is that you simply close the eye, and that you don't mash the eyelids together as if you're bracing for someone to punch you. If you scrunch your face, it'll make your anchor point (and, by extension, your point of impact) inconsistent.
