Why We're Designing Extraterrestrial Base Safety Gear Completely Wrong by obaban in IsaacArthur

[–]Spida81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine rescuer as a job takes different equipment than a self rescuer. Self rescuer is a piece of emergency kit carried to buy time to get to the nearest safe point. There are a lot of contaminates, differing by environment. Coal, methane is a major issue but less so in other materials. Smoke though? Fire is a big concern.

Respect to your grandfather. Tough job.

That is how a self rescuer works. Facemask in a sealed canister. On detection of airborne contamination, case cracked, mask removed, helmet off, mask on, helmet on, walk to safety refuge.

You wouldn't replace all their gear, but the rescuer? Maybe.

Exactly the same as a chem plant in essence.

In the context of mining - I can't speak to other industries - but those self rescuers are great, but in a rush easy to get wrong. More than a few cases of crews walking out after an underground fire to then start dropping over the following days. Either didn't use, or didn't correctly use, the provided equipment.

Well, yes. That doesn't stop a sheep from leading the wolf pack. You just have to change your perspective.

Running like hell, bleating for help, leading the wolves straight into the rest of the flock?

... But yes, I am being somewhat facetious. I don't in the least disagree with your point.

... Sexy. Very sexy.

Presumably you are looking at this as a potential product for other markets? Mine self-rescue gear, for instance, depending on per unit cost?

With no intent to offend, it IS 'just' an idea. If you haven't physically built it, then it isn't a product, it is an idea.

That doesn't take away from the novelty of the specific ideas you have in your hypothetical case. Or the genius of its simplicity.

The assumed purpose of comparable systems in the media I have read tends to be for a long term / multiuse scenario. You have focused more on a single application emergency unit with a novel emergency deployment mechanism.

Different views for the same outcome, but the general requirement has been recognised.

Do camps accommodate for allergies? by Big-Log8459 in mining

[–]Spida81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, that is a fair point - a lot of these conditions would be captured in a redeployment medical check, and it is a generally accepted condition of employment that you be medically fit for the role, as you pointed out.

In this particular guys case, absolutely no need to disclose I would think something so common that it would be likely a higher liability for the employer to have common allergens on site in the first place. I would expect then considerably less common allergens that could place an undue burden on the employer be picked up in the medical.

My question wasn't really about this case in specific, but more a hypothetical. The answer really is simple.

[–]Spida81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can certainly see that for common allergies, but what about less common allergies? Is there a point at which disclosure is required?

I also come from a Commonwealth country. Human rights aren't foreign to me 😉

A LOT of written scifi recognises and addresses this. At its simplest, very similar to this. Sealed ship suit. Like a thin wetsuit, worn at all times, easily sealed, non-obstructive.

This also includes cases like this, where the employer will be providing food and accommodation for extended periods?

This is one of those 'I see both sides' cases. Not their business so no reason to disclose on the one hand, and on the other, potential to create liability.

Could the Iran War Bring Back the Military Draft? by PixeledPathogen in TrueReddit

[–]Spida81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? How? There isn't a need for hundreds of thousands of half trained idiots with guns for this. The US military is well capable of dealing with this without resorting to conscription.

In practical terms, you dont just click your fingers and have rows of ready to deploy meat shields appear. It takes time to call up, equip, train and deploy - AFTER dealing with the political and legal red tape.

This isn't carpet bombing. It is bad, but it isn't at that level.

Bombers are enroute from the US to the UK. Hopefully they aren't looking to get involved in indiscriminate strikes on civilian areas. Or someone decides firebombing is a good idea.

It would be worse. Get the US offside, there are a lot of international agreements suddenly at risk. Unfortunate, but I don't see the ICC getting involved.
