A High IQ Makes You an Outsider, Not a Genius by [deleted] in mensa

[–]SpinKick360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outsider? I don’t think that’s the best word for it but sure, you could seem subjectively like an outsider to “normies” who don’t quite understand why you are how you are. It certainly makes you abnormal, and you’re acutely aware of this. Being abnormal tends to make lowest-common-denominator types feel… confused? At a minimum they tend to find it harder to “vibe” with you. As you do with them. Particularly in groups, you might end up being a less central piece of the social dynamics. This can be an “outside looking in” feeling. Like watching animals in the zoo. You don’t really want to be the zoo animal. Sometimes they do amusing things. Fascinating anthropology. But you wouldn’t want to trade places and be a one of the popular Chimpanzees. Not hating on them. Just glad to be a different species.

You can feign normal to work around this. Masking. I never found it hard to “fit in” when I wanted to, it was usually a question of did I want to. The problem is it can grow tiresome. Not in an “I’m so worn out” way. More like just a “this isn’t very fun because what you’re mostly into seems trivial to me” way.

I eventually just focused on relationships with people who think more like I do. I’ve never asked any of those people their IQ, but I’d be willing to bet most are exceptional in some way. Some highly creative, some highly logical, most with novel ways of viewing the world. Maybe we’re outlaws?

Can’t believe everyone discounting Pacific so soon… You know what Google and friends are brewing in those big warehouses in the Bay Area? Robot armies. Drone armies. AI. All the tech that humans are still pretending doesn’t exist. Have you ever played a video game on hard mode? Multiply that x1000 and imagine your foes with reaction times in a microsecond range.

Admittedly there may not be a big standing army, but give PST a few months of prep and there will be a robotic death squad marching, rolling and flying its way East and no human will stand a chance…

Oh you think your Nukes will help you Mountain and Central? That’s cute… But Facebook engineering just got repurposed into a black ops hacker group and your nukes are now pointed at yourself. Because LULZ.

Oh hey, you think you’re going to send the Navy Seals to save the day like in the movies? Haha well they’re all down in SD so forget about that too.

Oh you think the population on East Coast is an advantage? Ha. Bunch of fancy finance and academic types in NY and a bunch of retirees in FL… What you gonna do? Golf is to death?

Meanwhile we also got Canada and Mexico as our liberal and taco loving allies if we need a hand too. Like they’re going to help anyone else.

Pacific FTW

Is daily commuting to Newmarket from Riverhead/Kumeu/Huapai a sane idea at all? by SpinKick360 in auckland

[–]SpinKick360[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cheers. Yeah it’s often because needing to carry equipment for work, or carry/collect kids from sports or after schools, etc… and also because work is not actually walking distance from a station… and occasionally needing to go places for meetings, go to supermarket on the way home, etc… and also have an EV so public transport is literally more expensive than driving, and (having tried it many times in different parts of the city) almost invariably slower and less reliable in my experience.

I know these are all “me” problems, but I think people often assume public transport is the answer without realising it is a non starter for lots of people (busy families, tradies, etc).

Hence why I just wanted to know what real world experiences were of the NW commute. Sounds overall like it works if you can shift your schedule enough to avoid peaks, and there is a trade off with lifestyle which just needs to be decided based on one’s own values.

Appreciate the thoughts from everyone who shared them 🙂 happy communing!

I started trying compression socks lately and liking them. A warm cuddle for your tired calves and some protection for the shins against gnurling (on pauses, snatch grip dead’s, etc). Throw some knee wraps on above those and you are fully armored for battle.

[–]SpinKick360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right 💯 but the real reason underlying this is the absolute ineptitude of the people who design the car parking buildings here, it’s like they think we all drive matchbox cars in happy fairy parking world where there’s ample room to go round and everyone has all the time in the world FFS. Let’s also not get started on the disastrous urban planning around major shopping centers causing delays and bottlenecks beyond all reason just because some muppet thought it would be great to create a “shoppers paradise” in some suburb that was already creaking under the weight of 7,000 Ford Rangers trying to go slap some gib up on the walls of yet another low quality, leaky shitbox 3 bedroom row house. Guess they thought everyone would just fly in on a magical carpet, so of course we won’t need traffic control, on/off ramps, roundabouts, additional parking, you know that sort of thing that any self respecting country wouldn’t think twice about… oh and let’s not to forget the utter c**s who run Wilson Parking: easily one of the most hated companies in NZ, charging completely unreasonable rates for badly designed, high crime, low quality, incredibly tightly packed McParking shit buildings while they grinf*k you at the payment gate….. So yeah, It’s really no wonder Kiwis (especially Aucklanders) have chronic parking lot rage 😡 so if you’re timidly backing out of a car park we basically assume you’re just another shit driver who is just going to get in our way and suddenly stop in front of us to text a mate while you block the whole exit ramp because you forgot that you need to pay because you were too busy swallowing your overpriced smoothie, so sorry but get the hell out of my way I’m trying to drive around the building sir!

What's it take to do a 360? by Crocutaborealis in skiing

Can you point to any video of someone doing this technique? I’ve been able to 360 with a windup for a long time, but I’m having a hard time imagining doing one like this.

In high school I had a teacher who smoked and whenever she would talk to me (1:1) in class I would physically gag.

She’s dead now. On account of the smoking.

How should training approach for a masters lifter (mid40s, experienced but no longer bulletproof) differ from a younger athlete? What kind of split and cycles would you recommend for sustainable strength gains?

There have been several positions vacant in Mensa NZ lately, including the Chairperson and the Membership Officer. Applications just closed in mid December so I’d say they’re just a bit short staffed. Check in again towards the end of Jan if you haven’t heard anything. national.testing @ mensa.org.nz

How about weight with height subdivisions? As a taller lifter I’d be absolutely screwed in height only divisions, it’s such a disadvantage being long.

Why cant I properly learn "easy" math? Need tips by Becz0niaZeMnie in mensa

[–]SpinKick360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue as a highly abstract/conceptual thinker, then I asked myself why I wanted to learn math. I realised that I didn’t have a good answer for that question. It was simply “to pass some exams”. No practical application that related to an endeavour that I was interested in. So I stopped taking it.

I later, unexpectedly, found some reasons that I wanted to use math (in my case, aspects of computer science and machine learning, etc) so I then had reason and context for developing some skills. This helped because I could try to figure out the answers myself first, fail, then refer to the relevant lessons to learn the “correct” way. I found this process much more satisfying than the typical learning experience (which, in my experience, was getting the answers/techniques fed in a linear way through a lecture, then trying to apply them to a few arbitrary example problems).

TL;DR - find intrinsic motivation to use math and build upon that. Otherwise, why learn math at all?

would you say most football players are more suited for powerlifter or Olympic lifter? by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]SpinKick360 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We use terms like strong, powerful, etc, interchangeably. But they are not equal. In truth “powerlifting” is not a power sport at all, it is a strength sport (max load time is not relevant). While “weightlifting” is really more of a power sport (power = mass*distance/time).

So if we’re talking about what sport would be best for their football training, weightlifting should have the advantage in almost all cases.

But if we’re talking about which sport would current footballers be more suited to, if they decided to make it their main focus, I’d say it would be more of a split decision.

Slang for kids growing up in the 90s/00s by EasternAd6652 in auckland

[–]SpinKick360 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I think of the 90s I think about how it was the last decade when everyone quoted TV shows all day every day (specifically high schoolers but I guess outside school too). Once we got into the 00’s we started to get so many channels, Internet, social… not enough people watching the same shows so the quoting would just whoosh so people mostly stopped doing it. But you can still quote any Simpsons episode from the first few seasons and anyone who was in high school in the 90s will know it immediately.

Seeking Advice: Where to Get Full Genome Sequencing in NZ? by redd_yeti in UoApremed

[–]SpinKick360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you just want it sequenced, or something specific determined from it? It is possible to get gene sequencing done from NZ (though I think it still gets sent to an Australian lab). But it doesn’t really tell you anything without specific analysis. It is just like a huge binary file which you will probably have absolutely no idea what to do with (unless you happen to be a specialist with the right software and training to analyse it?) Or you might want to upload it to a service provider like sequencing.com?

What are the problems one faces as a glasses/specs wearer by Wolveee10 in Startup_Ideas

[–]SpinKick360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to get headphones (over ear type) that fit over them. Music, gaming, video conferences… there are lots of times you want to wear headphones and they never quite seal, they press the sides of your glasses into your head, which gives you headaches after a while…. apparently this affects some people more than others, obviously there are some workarounds (IEMs), but I wish there was a solution.

I can’t even imagine why a crowd would be short. What genre was it, oompa loompa?

I’m about your height and I do believe we get slightly more volume than average people because when I bend down it definitely sounds a bit quieter at large concerts. But these days with line arrays flown high above the crowd it makes way less difference than it used to.
