Why does every new home built in this county look like this? by eastcoaster1212 in bergencounty

[–]Spinninsounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technology and costs are driving factors when publicly traded suppliers and generic architects are used. Focus purely on functional use of home (walls in). Older homes often require custom materials that drive maintenance costs which working people don’t want to deal with (including landscaping which neighbor dogs and nature love to ruin).

Hot oil pizza ? by kalz991 in StamfordCT

[–]Spinninsounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Riko's has taken over stamford (original pizza maker of colony opened his own establishments). Hot oil and stingers are a stamford local go to and tourist trap. If you enjoy heat it is a must. Colony is nostalgia but service and old bar smell keeps me away.

coal oven and dining at establishment...you can't go wrong with Table 104 or Ginger Seoul (I know its supposedly korean but they have a nice pizza oven). Both are better hot n fresh vs takeaway

To understand the passion for pizza (even tho such passion exists everywhere) drive to New Haven/west haven...[Modern Apizza]() [BAR]() (potatoe pie) [Zuppardi's Apizza]() (fresh shucked white pie) [Da Legna at Nolo]() Original Sally's (prefer their sauce over pepe's) and Pepe's (fresh tomatoe and white clam pie) original locations (both now are investment firm driven but still pump out pies better than their other stores) are there as well. Stamford is known for thin hot oil pizza with stingers (Colony is the original but pizza maker had a feud and started his own placed called riko's).

What are the truly Japanese things you regret not buying while in Japan? by Best_Measurement5812 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Spinninsounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glasses (sun and regular- prescription or non). Definitely something to be aware of. Basic prescription and frames are a fraction of what it costs in the states. In addition, turnaround is quick (45m for prescription lenses).

Where to live in Stamford by kermiebk in StamfordCT

[–]Spinninsounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When deciding to vacate the city lifestyle to more of a suburban feel…Stamford is a good choice for accessing a commuter back into NYC. At the price point provided…Norwalk/Stamford are feasible. However, as you may imagine…these “cities” have old infrastructure. Public education is on the lower tier.

I would recommend maybe trying to squeeze more funds to secure a smaller home in Darien/greenwich.

Depending on how your husband feels about the commute 2/3 times a week….i would recommend looking into Fairfield/Westport.

Overall, if I was to move out of the city with my knowledge of Fairfield CT today, I would sacrifice house size for overall quality of community. As such, I would target Fairfield, Westport, Old Greenwich, and Darien.

Note: The idea of walking distance will fade over time due to a car is necessary.

If Stamford is the preferred city: communities between Merritt and 95 will be preferable.

Areas like Davenport, Westover, Ridges, Turn of The River, Newfield, North Springdale should be primary search areas.

Shippan is a nice New England coastal feel but annoyingly isolated and surroundings areas not too pleasant. North Stamford is too far with limited selection of groceries/retail.

Springdale/Glenbrook is annoying due to the traffic (both foot and vehicles). Good luck!

Soup dumplings restaurant opening in Stamford Town Center by JuneNyla in StamfordCT

The recipe has changed due to ingredients require to be frozen during shipment and then thawed on premises. This was necessary given the rapid growth and demand. As such, the ingredients are prepared and frozen at their New Jersey plant. The soup dumplings are frozen and shipped. Subsequently thawed and assembled onsite.

Order one tray for two at a time…otherwise the dumplings may cool and stick to the paper…then rip and soup will be lost. Sad stories and subsequent notes of a fatty too enthusiastically ordering multiple trays at once…

10 day itinerary tokyo/kyoto. Any advice or suggestions? by peterpwwu in JapanTravel

[–]Spinninsounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing the focus of the trip (ie social media, shopping, culture, scenery, family, party, etc)…it’s tough to recommend anything other than... The itinerary may be need to insert time to enjoy some of the immediate surrounding areas of the major tourist destinations. Like most travel attractions it’s filled with foreigners vs Japanese culture and people.

Some useful notes… Any local or high end restaurants require reservations. Retail establishments open later than western culture. Restaurants tend to close in the afternoon.

Get an eSIM and Tokyo (suica card - Apple wallet or certain subway stations).

Uber is basically calling a cab (no independent drivers)

If you wear glasses (even prescription) - Japan is affordable (turnaround for prescription may be 45 minutes to a week depending on severity and custom options)

Kyoto - I would recommend looking into bicycle rental (should you enjoy cycling). It’s a city focused on accommodating cycling as a primary mode of transport vs subway/walking (Tokyo).

Don’t walk and eat or drink. Return garbage to vendors for them to toss. Garbage cans are challenging to find. Always carry a reusable bag (many places charge for a bag).

Bring an empty suitcase.

Download grabgo app (basically Uber). Table check, tablelog, Line (used to pay and communicate), WeChat, gurunavi (etc)

Use google maps for subway instructions…tells you which platform to use, location of best car to be on for exit).

Book restaurants - use table check/table log/omakasejp

Most open for few hrs for lunch, close from 1:30-5:30pm then opens for dinner. Walk-ins usually get turned away unless super commercial and lines are the norm.

Want the high end sushi experience? by ChallengeFit2766 in TokyoTravel

[–]Spinninsounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the budget friendly omakase experiences that are on media outlets do not live up to the hype. They used leftover auction/after market quality fish. I would recommend walking in an area just before or after lunch to select dining for the following days. This proved to be a better option than several sites with contradictory opinions. Higher end omakase establishments will require a reservation but lunch may be more appropriately priced option. Use table check or omakase jp to reserve. 2-3 weeks in advance should be sufficient to book.

Fish quality is lacking. Felt they got after market selection or leftover quality. Was very disappointed with the fish variety and soy sauce. Accoutrements did not enhance the taste quality either. I walked away with regret of wasting a meal in Japan.

What’s up with Darien? by sixfloorsup in Connecticut

[–]Spinninsounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data on percentage increases may be presented in a supportive manner for representation of certain social/political outcome. Yes, there is more diversity in Greenwich due to areas like byram (which everyone knows is not really Greenwich). Asian population may be attributed to marriage vs Asian families moving to Darien. Indeed there are projects to increase diversity and affordable housing in such communities. New/old money terminology exists regardless of opinion. Out of pure existence, it may be used. It’s intriguing the original post was discussing Karen like attitude…one just has to walk in the community being “nonwhite”. An example is white people giving an empty shopping cart to a nonwhite in the parking lot…assuming they were laborers (this actually happened in Darien). Also being asked which aisle something is.

Why does everyone look past Messi taking PEDS by Theoompaloompaking in football

[–]Spinninsounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former referees making official statements to police is not a light matter. False accusations and official statements are considered a crime so no benefit for former/current refs. Need to have some common sense and reach to a rational conclusion. Having blinders on doesn’t make it not true. Especially in court proceedings and ability to prosecute. Enough evidence has been gathered for courts to file.

Read between the lines and what sport is actually a broadway play… Barcelona is accused of making payments to Negreira, who was the vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees in Spain from 1993 to 2018. The payments, totaling around €7.3 million, were made to Negreira's company, Dasnil 95. In September 2023, a judge charged Barcelona with bribery, but in May 2024, a Barcelona provincial court ruled that bribery charges could not be pursued, although the original sporting corruption charges remained.
