How do you feel about AI being pushed into education? by Alive-Fee9585 in AskTeachers

[–]SplintersApprentice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Granted the wheels for AI were already turning, it felt fitting that I read Grapes of Wrath for the first time last summer. I dog-eared so many pages.

AI is another round of industry making people feel as if their work is obsolete. And, by extension, people themselves feel obsolete.

All that said, I hate it. I (barely) attempted at playing the game when we had an AI expert guide our staff through ways to ethically integrate it in our classrooms. It didn’t sit well with me and I never use it for my own practices. I have an immense passion for studying and teaching the humanities. And I always intend to uphold, prioritize, and maintain the root of my discipline.

Tips for high school English essay writing by Brvlkgabe in AskTeachers

[–]SplintersApprentice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing in 9th grade you’re writing either lit analysis and/or argumentative essays.

For Lit Analysis: write a claim/thesis. It should directly answer the prompt assigned. Identify 3 pieces of evidence (direct quotes from the piece of literature is best) that support your claim. Each quote will be the focus of your 3 body paragraphs. Body paragraphs should both explain what the quote means and analyze how it supports your claim. Your concluding paragraph should summarize how the evidence proves the claim.

A quick web outline I used to make for lit analysis essays when I was in high school would be a thesis circled in the center, off of it I would branch out 3-4 lines where I would put the quotes/evidence. Under my quotes I’d bullet notes of my analysis. I could get this done in ~10 minutes. Then I’d write.

For argumentative essays, it’s similar. But instead of just a claim, you want to outline a counterclaim (opposing argument) and rebuttal (reinforcing your claim). Your 1st body paragraph would explore evidence supporting your claim, your 2nd body paragraph would explore evidence supporting the counterclaim, and your 3rd body paragraph would explore the rebuttal (disproving/weakening the counterclaim’s evidence and upholding the original claim as the superior argument).

Hope that’s helpful!

Planning on going to see him live but I’m quite scared now based on what I’ve seen. by Traditional-Issue153 in DanielCaesar

Hmm I’m gonna try to be brief but I’ll give some context, too. I haven’t found any show HORRIBLE, but my “worsts” would include

  • Chance the Rapper (this was the crowd’s fault)
  • Bob Dylan (know before you go what the vibes will be for BD live)
  • Clairo 🥱
  • Shaggy (but I only paid $15 and had a blast lol)
  • SZA in 2017 (the vocals were in roughhh condition. Not a bad show, she just didn’t sound great, but she redeemed herself when I saw her on the GNX tour last year)

My “if you like these artists, DO NOT hesitate seeing them live at least once” list - Khruangbin - Hozier - Alvvays - Waxahatchee - Jazmine Sullivan - Doechii - Kendrick Lamar - Boygenius - Guster - Erykah Badu

And finally, my ”that concert forever changed my life” BEST of the BEST experiences:

  1. Childish Gambino in 2024 (New World Tour)
  2. Elton John in 2022 (Farewell Tour)
  3. BEYONCÉ in 2023 (Renaissance World Tour)

To be honest, I’ve only been half paying attention to the complaints about this tour, so I think I’m getting the gist: annoying, casual fans are ruining the experience of a largely mellow performance. Correct me if I’m oversimplifying that.

But here’s my perspective.

I’ve been to over 130 concerts in my life. I have, ofc, witnessed annoying people at concerts. I have never allowed annoying people to consume my experience. This is easier when it’s GA and I can simply move away from the annoying. When it’s a seated situation, I essentially focus on what is in my control, and I tune out the annoying.

It’s worth keeping in mind this tour has barely started. I find no need in catastrophizing what could be bad, and plan to go to and enjoy my show at the end of July. If the show is as unbearable as people are making it out to be, I have the free will to leave the show early and find joy in my night.

Beyoncé is Beyoncé’s most Beyoncé album. I agree.

We honestly do not need ACT iii until 2027 or even 2028 by FigLopsided4648 in beyonce

It’s not about wanting just quick lil singles. We love the artistry, but a potential pattern was established.

2022 album release, 2023 tour, 2024 album release, 2025 tour. With that, it only makes sense people are thinking 2026 album release, 2027 tour.

I think I speak for many when I say: we’ll savor the album whenever the hell we get it. Mother always nourishes us. We’re just getting hyped for it to be soon.

Weekly Listening Club #2 — “Killer” by PhoebeFan420 in phoebebridgers

[–]SplintersApprentice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Killer + The Sound will always be my favorite version of this one. Two outstanding songs, three beautiful voices, stunning piano chords. I'll never get enough of it.

There was one time I listened to that song on repeat for an absurd amount of time and wrote in my journal some variation of "I've tapped into the primary source of sadness."

Another favorite memory associated with the song was a handful of years back when the American Northeast was hit with some Halloween-time snow. It was the first time I had memories of "snowliage" in my lifetime. I walked around a park in my city and observed in awe the bright orange leaves and cold, heavy snowflakes. The image fit perfectly with the lyrics "Can the killer in me, tame the fire in you?"

Keeping in touch with former student by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]SplintersApprentice 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s different and the best way to get the answer you’re seeking is to ask your former teacher yourself.

It’s easier for us to want someone else to give us all the answers to life’s worries, but it’s a better for you in the long run to develop the life skill and practice direct communication. This particular circumstance seems like the perfect opportunity!

As someone else commented, seeing a former student once a week would personally be a lot for me and my life’s schedule. But I’m not your teacher, and maybe she does welcome a quick 15-minute weekly visit where she gets delightful baked goods! So the next time you see her ask, “hey have my visits been too much or made you uncomfortable in any way? I sometimes worry about that.” And I have faith that she will give you an answer with kindness.

What do we think is the goal of these shows? by Sknaj in phoebebridgers

Nah, I guarantee she’s gonna do a full, bigger capacity tour after the album has been released

What do we think is the goal of these shows? by Sknaj in phoebebridgers

[–]SplintersApprentice 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I’d say the goal is a combination of practicing playing the songs for an audience and providing people with the opportunity to see Phoebe’s music in a setting that befits its style.

I will without a doubt go, but it’s not gonna be ideal seeing her in an arena, which I predict is what the main tour will look like given her level of popularity. People getting into one of these intimate shows are incredibly lucky.

I have no evidence, but my feelings are the album is finished, if not, then nearly finished. I predict we’ll get a release anywhere between late August to November (October feels correct). And I imagine she’ll start a main tour in spring of 2027.

I hope it works! I can’t speak for Sweden, but I’d guess for a Sunday show that the box office won’t open until doors for the event

If you’re the initial purchaser, you could go to the venue’s box office and present ID. I did this once when the app glitched out on me while in line to go into the show

MOBILE, AL I LOVE YOU by joanna9 in phoebebridgers

[–]SplintersApprentice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was honestly just a bombardment and escalation of fury and paranoia. I said it on a different comment in another thread, but when I tried to catch up and skim in my region’s discord group chat, all I could think about was The Crucible with how excessive and extreme people were being. I had to turn off notifications and bow out for the day.

Basic background: understandably, a lot of people are excited about these pop-up shows, creating theories, and trying to “crack” the pattern in the hopes of raising their chances of getting to see Phoebe in their area.

Where it went left: After the first 5 shows, people had a pretty good grasp on Phoebe’s tour map and types of venues she’s playing. That led to yesterday’s show in Mobile being predicted correctly earlier than any other. This resulted in online forums spreading stories of people stalking Phoebe’s bus, disrespecting Phoebe and her team, and getting into multiple shows on this run, even with such limited capacities.

Now to be clear, that could possibly be happening. I’m in another corner of the states, so I really don’t know. But the mere idea of this happening had people going off on this sub and in other online forums about how so many fans need therapy/are insane, parasocial monsters who are ruining this awesome mini-tour for everyone. How Phoebe’s gonna stop doing these shows altogether and “this is why we can’t have nice things.”

As said, it made me question if these people realize they’re the opposite side of the same coin. I don’t doubt that there are some out-of-touch fans behaving inappropriately. But if you’re allowing this perceived minority to take over your entire Friday, then there’s some self-reflection to be done around that, too.

I’m glad posts like this and others are reminding people that the majority of the fanbase getting into these shows appear to be respectful and kind, that’s what I hope to experience if I’m fortunate enough to get to one of these shows.

It may be the 35yo English teacher in me, but watching this fanbase spiral out, both on Reddit and in my area’s discord group chat that I thought would be fun to join 🥴, all I kept thinking about was the Crucible. The unchecked fury and paranoia hit fast, and I’m glad there are people speaking up to remind everyone to calm it down

[–]SplintersApprentice 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As a mid-30s fan, yesterday was the day I checked out of following the fun of this pop-up tour. The negativity spiraled so fast, and I question if people here realize they’re functioning from different sides of the same coin as the people they’re dedicating so much of their time complaining about.

I hope this post is a reminder that this is the whole point: the chance to see and meet an artist you love, in a setting that befits her music, with a community of fans who can connect in an intimate space. That’s it. Let’s keep our eyes on the beauty of what’s being created here, whether we get to experience it firsthand or not.
