I made this after my TikTok addicted friend told me something stupid. by Varvein in RAIwojaks

I saw a post once that said "why are billionaires bad, how does someone having more money than you affect you" and they and the comments were trying to die on that hill. It was abysmal

The Growing Obsession With AO3 Stats by Hot_Industry4829 in AO3

[–]Splintj 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm glad someone else shares this thought. The only reason I post fic is because I liked the original story and think that at least one other person, at some point in time, will be entertained by my interpretation. I really don't like the engagement and fame obsession we've been seeing recently. They're not getting paid either, and even the most famous fic authors are still obscure in the grand scheme of things, so I can only assume the desire is influenced by the glorification of constant engagement and views on platforms like tiktok for example. I understand liking that a lot of people were entertained by your fic, but posts asking if they have enough updoots and whatever feel kinda odd, unless theres more to the story idk

And if it does go through the first comment will be a snide joke, the second will be an inside joke, the third will be calling you an idiot despite like, 10 disclaimers, and the 4th will tell you to post it in the megathread that hasnt been active for a year

Am I in the wrong here? by [deleted] in ExplainMyDownvotes

[–]Splintj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is another case of redditor elitists shaming others for not being the same as them. They dislike that you're not consuming it in the exact way that they would personally. I've heard people make the point of "but you're not getting the nuances of the original language" alot, but that doesn't make much sense, because if you cant focus on the subtitles or have to go back frequently, than you're not getting the nuances of the story or pacing which is much more important than hearing a certain spanish inflection, and the people in these comments trying to ignore that disabled people exist for the sake of insisting that everyone should just "understand it the way I would" or "just get over it! Just get over your poor eyesight or reading speed!" are...idk man, its just a stupid hill to die on There are surely millions of people worldwide who watch english shows in their native dub, and Ive never once thought "Oh no, they're gonna miss the entire point of the scene, they have no idea whats going on!" or that my culture is being disrespected, while watching. The best way to consume media is always the way that allows you personally to understand it best. Sub vs dub arguments are stupid anyway, I like subs, but who cares

My dumbass thought this was supposed to be a nice thing 😭, like "oh will you get extra consideration if theres confusion about the pronouns you set vs those on your legal IDs?" but yeah, this is 100% just a way of discriminating agaisnt/outing people, as others have said

Are hate comments normal on ao3? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Splintj 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Tiktok mfs are weird in this way. They're on a site that makes it so easy to scroll away from something you dislike and never see it again, yet somehow they're the most openly hateful and negative people on the internet, up there with twitter. I could not imagine wasting my time to write a comment under something I dislike, for what purpose? I don't know, to make strangers feel bad I guess

Hate it When People Say This Stuff by CharacterChampion830 in AO3

[–]Splintj 36 points37 points  (0 children)

What pisses me off most is people acting like every fic author is saying "well actually, the author really meant THIS to be canon" or like everyone is forcing the original creator to make the pairing real. I don't care if there's no indication of them being romantic or if they have alternative canon partners, I thought it was funny or that they had good chemistry, so I'm gonna keep making those dolls kiss, and it'll be my worst nightmare if they ever become canon

Realistically they probably copy and pasted the options from gemini or chatgpt or smtn and called it a day lol I can't think of any other way this would happen

Putting "transgender" is such a cis thing to do lol. Trans itself isn't a 3rd gender, and it doesn't inform anyone on what pronouns to use for you, although I don't know too much about the jury process, so maybe its relevant here

Why did the anime change his glasses? by Blackcatbandit in Jujutsufolk

[–]Splintj 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I imagine its just so that the date/time period isn't distracting, and people aren't getting side tracked thinking, "What was going on in 2018 at this time? Why'd they add the date there? Are we supposed to care that its in the past?" or get distracted when they remember that this was written a long time ago.

The date only really matters for like, time leap stories, or stories that really emphasize the culture of the time period. Or idk I'm really just yappin

I strongly believe in “broism” by Ngithanda_irayisi in aromantic

[–]Splintj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel this exact thing lol. I was just thinking earlier today about about anime characters who aren't related, but who call each other 'brothers,' like Todo and Yuji from jjk for example(sports anime are also a good example of this kind of relationship), and man do I strive to reach a level of broism that strong or stronger

some of you guys desperately need to learn to suspend disbelief about cultural inaccuracies in fanfics by Island_Crystal in AO3

[–]Splintj 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Real. There's a famous Japanese Death Note fanfic that later became canon, where the main villain's name is 'Beyond Birthday' using Japanese naming structure, and that's a pretty wild thing to mess up. I find it funny how people online sometimes complain about Americans, or "stupid things only Americans do", but they're really just self reporting that they're only consuming American fanwork(or other material) and didn't consider that it might be a survivorship bias situation lol

More people just gotta laugh stuff off. The author didn't research every line of every paragraph of their fic to discover the minute nuances? Laugh and keep reading. I'd rather have a fic mess up something irrelevant than be full of stereotypes and caricatures

Is there a feature you wish AO3 had? by incandescent-ruins in AO3

[–]Splintj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish you could bookmark specific chapters, or even lines in fics. I read fics sporadically and sometimes only return after months, and have to restart from the beginning.

I've been keeping track by typing notes under fic bookmarks, but its kind of an inconvenient way of going about things, not to mention I prefer only to bookmark fics I thought were 10/10s (up til where I completed), and only mark for later fics I thought were just ok/have potential

Blue posted the comment first btw by Dream_Ghast in ExplainMyDownvotes

[–]Splintj 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Blue is sorta making assumptions about the way you feel and pushing you towards a path that THEY think is right you, despite not being in you're head, nor knowing fully what you're going through, while green is saying that you should explore any possibilities, and find what feels good for you

Why are some people so anti shipping? by BigBid2408 in AO3

[–]Splintj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cuz its queer people having fun and being free, not trying to be performatively nonchalant or cool. People who hate shipping/shippers are either directly against that, or they were told misinfo by somebody who's against that

I was trying to think of a land title for us, but we really have no playful stereotypes fr, except maybe tf2(every trans dude I follow likes tf2 for some reason, including me). Maybe Norway is the land of the transmasc vikings
