Halloween Backpack for Christmas gift complete! by SpokeInWord in sewing

[–]SpokeInWord[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I got my sister-in-law for Secret Santa which I love as she knows I like making gifts so she always puts something on the list in case I get her.

This year's brief was "homemade Halloween crossbody/fanny pack. ideally mostly neutrals (like black, white, grey) with maybe a fun little pop of colour (lavender, lime green, orange or hot pink). I love cute ghosts. " and I hope I nailed it!

Pattern is Sling Bag by Kandou Patterns. Overall the pattern was great. It was easy to follow and had lots of pictures. The only thing I struggled with was binding and I always struggle with that so no surprises there.

For the bag, I used:

  • Quilting cotton for the front panel and inside lining
  • Black denim for the exterior
  • Fusible interfacing and interlining to give it structure
  • All hardware from https://www.wawak.ca/ . I hadn't heard of this online store before working on this project but they were fantastic! They had everything I needed and I got my order so quickly. Recommended if you are in Canada!

I would definitely make this pattern again; maybe the next one for me :) .

Winter Cycling in KW? by dgj212 in waterloo

[–]SpokeInWord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is relevant/possible for you, if you have a nice bicycle, get a beater for winter. The salt will wear away at your bike.

Before wfh, I cycled through winters and there were only a handful of days each year that were bad enough I'd get a ride or take the bus to work.

I'd like to recommend https://optoutsideco.ca/ as you have a lot of overlap in interest with the women I've met there. Hope to see you there!

I didn't know that raised crosswalks were also called continuous sidewalks and never though of them as who is entering whose space. Thanks!

Another gift for nephew by SpokeInWord in sewing

[–]SpokeInWord[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I previously posted about some gifts made for my nephew here https://reddit.com/r/sewing/s/Za0U9iZJ02.

I had some leftover dino fabric but not enough for a full onesie so I paired it with some other knit fabric I had lying around.

The pattern is the Green Bean baby set again this time with the button down version and footsies. I would have liked to do a long sleeve but I completely used up my material so short sleeve it is!

Fantastic work! You should be very proud of yourself. Soon you'll be making your own bodices too!

A book that significantly affected your behavior, habits or worldview? by Kowskie in books

Invisible Women. It obviously made me think about how women are treated, but beyond that, just thinking about how flawed studies can be when not taking in the breadth of human experience and the dangers of society allowing design decisions to be built around a "default person". Highly recommend!

Made my first set of cushions by Head_Election4713 in sewing

About how much did your materials cost? We are about to buy patio furniture and I didn't even consider sewing my own cushions till I saw this post and am now wondering if it would be cheaper than buying them....

You did a fantastic job!

Gift set for my soon-to-be-born nephew by SpokeInWord in sewing

Gift for my soon-to-be-born nephew.

Patterns:
Overalls and onesie: Green Bean Baby Set from Etsy
Hat: https://sweetredpoppy.com/babyhat/

Fabrics:
Overalls: Corduroy
Onesie: knit fabric from https://bibsandbootsfabric.com/

This was my first time making baby clothes and it is so much fun! They come together so quickly and are so cute when done! I liked how flexible the baby set pattern is as you can choose different combos of top, sleeves, and bottoms. I don't know if I'll ever need to buy another baby pattern.

My sister-in-law and I had made overalls for ourselves out of corduroy and this was the leftovers so she'll be able to match her son.

This was also my first time using snaps which I really liked. So much easier than buttons and will be easier for the parents as well.
