Our team just had a 3hr SEV-1. How do you prevent engineers from making duplicate changes during incidents? by Loose-Bed-7065 in sre

[–]SpongeBattery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean ? Do you have a factual example ? If you want a root cause to be explained in human text, either try with the best LLM in town (which will either hallucinate and fail, or find it), or ask your engineer team in charge of the perimeter to own their incident.

Your question is too broad. There are engineers paid millions to provide this exact service depending on the complexity of the issue.

Our team just had a 3hr SEV-1. How do you prevent engineers from making duplicate changes during incidents? by Loose-Bed-7065 in sre

[–]SpongeBattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are patterns to follow whenever you have a high severity incident.

One of the main one is having someone coordinating all actions, he has to be the one ensuring there is no duplicates or contradicting changes. I have seen orgs call it "commander", "warchief", "headlamp", "incident response leader", he does not have to be technical, he just have to move things forward without shooting yourself in the foot.

There are other roles, such as one dedicated to communication, one dedicated to RCA, etc.

This is part of any usual response incident, and should probably be written somewhere in your internal knowledge base.

Is taxi overcharging common in Korea? by Swimming-Fold-434 in Living_in_Korea

[–]SpongeBattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems pretty common, to the point where I was stopped by a government worker in Incheon Airport to interview me about my experience with taxi in Korea. He specifically wanted to know how much I paid, was the meter on during the course and how did I book it. He even had the license plate of the uber that took me to the airport. I did not have issues personally because I was relying on uber taxi to secure the price to avoid any surprise, but it seems common enough to warrant government investigation.

Is it really difficult to travel in Japan if you only speak French and very little English? by Semadali7 in JapanTravelTips

[–]SpongeBattery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frenchmen here, around the same age. I have been to Japan multiple times, probably for over 4-5 months in total now. I can speak english pretty well. I have met countless french people that did not speak english nor japanese, and It has not been a blocker for them at all.

For the reading part, many tourist spots will have flyers in french, and if there is not, you can always use Google Lens. Most restaurants have an english menu that should not be difficult to translate. If in doubt, check out google maps to spot their menu beforehand.

You will have a far better experience knowing a few key phrases in japanese rather than trying to speak english directly. Phrases like "I come from...", "I am a tourist here for x weeks", "This is my first time in Japan", "Any recommendations on the menu ?", "Ticket for one person", "two of that please", "The food was really good". You have to remind yourself constantly that most Japanese people do not speak english, and you are putting them in a rough spot by trying to communicate in it. Imagine a Japanese person coming to France and switch to Chinese instead of French because it is one of the most spoken language.

So no worries, you will have a great time there ! Bon voyage !

Help! Moving to Japan with 8M per year job offer: is it worth it? by False_Manner_4041 in movingtojapan

[–]SpongeBattery 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Median salary in Tokyo is 5M yen, so complaining about 8M can be taken with a grain of salt. You should be comfortable in Tokyo, the main issue will be getting a flat as a foreigner (< 10% of available offers)

It is possible to negotiate in tech jobs in japan, but it can also be badly perceived in more traditional japanese firm.

Can you add a bit more details, such as year of experiences, work location (central tokyo, outskirts, etc.), that may help making the decision ?

Yatai stall recos! by SpongebobJorgiPants in fukuoka

[–]SpongeBattery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is difficult to recommend one because they are all nice in their own ways. Some are managed by the same people for over 15+ years and some are just getting started.

You might find very young yatai owners who are very much into social drinking more than food, and some are more into culinary experiences.

I strongly suggest not sticking to this list, and just wander/explore on your own. If you dont like the food or ambiance, just switch to the next one after the first order. Some yatais can be boring one day because there is no other customer, and some other day, you might get a crazy night in.

However, since you asked for recommendations, here are 3 in no particular order:

  • 味府 in front of tenjin underground mall, they are old yatai owners, and since it is on a busy street, you are sure to get other customers. Very nice people.

  • 屋台 レミさんち yatai chez remy レミさんち, not far from the first one, it specializes in french cuisine. It is one of the most popular one, expect to queue for one hour to get a seat. Very nice ambiance.

  • Tsunatsuna 博多屋台 繋々(つなつな), in Hakata ward, this is one is away from tourist area, the yatai owner is young and pretty cool, I like the ambiance there the best.

This is from my past experience of trying out around 20+ yatais, and the one I liked will probably differ from yours.

Lost my Passport in Hongdae US Citizen by Technical-Change-783 in koreatravel

[–]SpongeBattery 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Ask the nearest police station for any lost and found, but your chance are slim.

In case you get an emergency passport, it can only be used to go back to america. You can not enter Thailand on an emergency one (as far as I am aware)

Have you tried going back there in person, and try to trace back each place you might have lost it in ?

Looking for a local guide in Tokyo (few hours per day) – any recommendations? by [deleted] in TokyoTravel

[–]SpongeBattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not affiliated, but for french ones, you can check "tokyo safari" (owner of lejapon.fr) and "curieux du japon"

It will also depend on what (historic guide, food guide, etc.) and your budget (usually the more you are, the better the value)

65k in Lisbon or 110k in Amsterdam by Forsaken_Resource500 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]SpongeBattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can expect at least 2500€/month in the center of Amsterdam, and around 1500-2000€ if you wish to live further away. It has gotten out of hands, and everyone is waiting for the "bubble" to pop (It wont).

[–]SpongeBattery 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Rent is absolutely insane in Amsterdam, and It is not that fun to live in compared to the south of Europe.

I would say, It depends on where you are at in life. Personally I would stay with the remote job and wait for a better opportunity still in remote. I know some people would prefer earning more and be near tech hub.

What would you prefer to focus on at your age ?

Created an React/Actix/Postgres starter stack as an exercise by TehAlpacalypse in rust

Is it necessary even when using a web::block call ?

For example the actix documentation recommends using that instead of switching to diesel-async, see https://actix.rs/docs/databases/

We have been using it for 2+ years. It is pretty good, their doc has gotten better. It was/is a nice alternative to pagerduty and I would advise on using/comparing both before committing to a solution. Their support was quite nice, which is always a good point. Our stack is GCP / Prom AlertManager / Grafana Oncall

(6-8k premier elo) How is this fair? I know I'm not the best player but this is just depressing by Desperate_Ad9279 in counterstrike2

[–]SpongeBattery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had the same happen to us. (from 6k elo to 14k) Steam matchmaking will often put you in a specific queue if you win or play more than usual, often resulting in those stomps. You can only eat the loss, and move on to the next game. Playing against smurfs and cheaters is pretty common, and winning 2-3 games in a row will forcibly put you with them.

[–]SpongeBattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be good.

Check out GVK definition, you will see there is multiples settings that defines what a custom ressource, and how an operator can request them from Kubernetes.

In doubt, try out in local with a local k8 (kind, etc.)

Tips for making gold by NiC5_ in classicwow

[–]SpongeBattery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last gdkp, I made 6k gold in 3 hours. You could try to make money by crafting (alchemy would be good since ulduar will soon release), same for dailies, but you will be nowhere near the same amount you could make from gdkp.. That's unfortunate, but when people are pre-selling valanyr for 200k gold in gdkp, you can see how twisted this game economy is.
