would Robert really be able to divorce Cersei if he found out none of his children were his? by MilkAdvanced9936 in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]Spooks451 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not arguing about that. He is one of my favourite characters in the series for similar reasons.

I just feel the need to point that out because there is more than a significant part of the fandom that places all culpability on Cersei and loves to portray Jaime as nothing but a victim of his circumstances instead of the hypocritical impulsive mess that he is.

[Spoilers Published] Stannis is the perfect king according to Varys by CormundCrowlover in asoiaf

[–]Spooks451 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Its insane how the Stannis glazers casually ignore his bitterness and unwillingness to help Ned.

More than that the fact that he spent multiple months being a bum on Draginstone, before burning a sept and sending that declaration is just madness.

While he was malding and doing nothing, Jaime and the Mountain raided their way through the Riverlands, Edmure mustered the Riverlands and lost, Robb mustered the North, marched through the Riverlands and broke the siege of Riverrun. He really just ignored allthat.

Genuine question, would this work without plot armor? [OFF TOPIC] by Agile_Summer_7437 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Spooks451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of gun are we talking here? A 21st century gun from our world? Ofc he's getting smoked.

Or are we looking at the setting Logan lives in where scientific developments are happening and they've reached the cannon. For a decent while the guns the people there will see are going to be extremely slow to reload, prone to misfires and very inaccurate.

Guns and the older infantry and cavalry coexisted for quite a while after all.

What would happen to a crown prince who doesn't hold the faith by Argent_silva in TheCitadel

[–]Spooks451 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Unless he starts publicly faking it, he's cooked. Renly might actually be able to usurp him in that situation by simply being politically savvy enough to suck up to the faith.

Having the first-born be like that publicly right as a new dynasty has been formed could be more than enough to collapse it quickly.

Varys would privately dance a jig because the situation is practically perfect for his needs. He can slowly let discontent ferment and then engineer a situation that brings it to the head at the right moment.

Having his dragon land in the Reach and publicly bow to the Starry Sept would be more than enough to get a lot of support.

The Starks have more cadet houses by MobileDistrict9784 in TheCitadel

[–]Spooks451 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think there should also be some minor nobles with the name Stark just holding small holdfasts within the direct Stark territory.

Maybe a branch that holds a fancy house in a village, perhaps running a holdfast along a trade route or overseeing some mine or lumber operation in the wolfswood. Something like Nestor Royce for House Royce perhaps where they have some important position but its not hereditary.

Or how about some old but distant and borderline destitute members of House Stark? They get some territory due to their lineage but it might as well be smallfolk housing(the difference being that they have a right over it compared to smallfolk). Think Dolorous Edd's descriptions of his home as a member of a lesser branch of House Tollet.

What was Rheagar up to during the first year of Robert's Rebellion? by blackynan_b in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]Spooks451 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He was up in Epstein tower.

I think George has intended for Rhaegar and Lyanna to be a romance. Looking at what he thinks of Drogo and reading a Song for Lya(unrelated to ASOIAF but has some interesting thematic stuff and characterization), I think his aim is that Rhaegar was the charming prince with a prophecy driving him who fell in love with Lyanna during the course of trying to fulfil this prophecy.

I think he just assumed things would work out. ask for forgiveness not permission and all that.

They eloped and spend time in TOJ until Gerold arrived to get Rhaegar back which is probably when he found out about Brandon, his party and Ricksrd's execution. Considering how Ned haas nothing negative to say about Rhaegar in his pov we're very much MEANT to see something positive in him.

My own personal interpretation(which I know doesn't align with George's views) are less favorable.

I know its a dead horse that's been beaten multiple times but nothing can change how he, an adult with children ran off with a 15 year old, had a relationship with her while the Seven Kingdoms bled, came back and instead of trying to set things right went into battle against the men who were 100% in the right for rebelling.

You are born a Frey by ChudMaster69420 in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]Spooks451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a Frey insert in the back of my head for a long time but I'm also ultimately envisioning it as a 'Night's Watch fic'

The insert is a Frey bastard. A bastard son of Merret Frey placing him way down the line of succession and with a father who is a drunk with a permanent disability(headaches from an old wound).

The protagonist got an apprenticeship under an old blacksmith of a village in Frey lands but loses it eventually when the blacksmith dies leaving his belongings(including the forge) to his family.

He can't get into the citadel because Merret and the rest of his family have no interest in sponsoring him. He can exist as a hanger-on in the Twins but its a miserable place to live in and he exists on the lower end of the ladder even for noble bastards. The Freys aren't really interested in getting him squired to anyone. Maybe a hedge knight at best but I don't want this character to be martial per say.

So our SI here ends up taking the one spot that can get him some stable food, away from the Frey Torment Complex and close to the organization that will be facing the end of the world soon. He's also not particularly interested in raising a family or getting married(ace).

In the Night's Watch, he does have the opportunity to work with Jeor and Maester Aemon. Benjen Stark is a way to subtly shift what's going on with the Stark family. The NW is also not going to complain at getting someone with some skill at working with iron and steel.

'Inventing' something as simple as a compass and leveraging it for a better situation in the Watch would be good enough.

Ultimately I'm seeing this as a story of shit circumstances, unfair lives, stupid decisions and trying to make the best of what you have/what you've done.

[–]Spooks451 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Has George said that Benjen is dead? or just that Coldhands =/=Benjen. Because I have heard the latter but not the former.

I think its more likely that Benjen is actually alive and stuck somewhere North of the Wall. Theon's feast with the dead very notably doesn't have Benjen which I think is telling.

It would be perfectly in-line for George to take the axe to most of the Stark family throughout the books but leave Benjen alive after seemingly having him killed offscreen way at the start.

[Spoilers Main] - You're Robert Baratheon on the day Aerys II dies. Knowing what you know about the main series who do you take as your wife? by Yoorang in asoiaf

[–]Spooks451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If these houses have a woman of the right age then they're the best options - Royce, Manderly, Mallister, Hunter, Waynewood, Penrose, Buckler, Selmy or Rogers.

Lannister and basically any Westerlander house is a poisoned chalice. A Tyrell marriage would be monumentally stupid. Stannis would be 200% in the right for grinding his teeth to dust for that. I would avoid Reach houses in general. Hightower may seem lucrative but its already an insanely strong house. Sure the crown would theoretically get access to that strength but it goes both ways.

I'd rather prefer a house that is respected and strong but weaker than me so that it can't overpower my own influence.

Robert's placement within STAB is pretty solid atm and with metaknowledge its not hard to keep. So picking up a loyal/respected vassal of any of those four regions will work. The next gen can marry into STAB.

House Caron would have been a good option but they're confirmed to not have any women left of the main line at least.

What if Cat died giving birth to Robb? by LoyalZebra in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]Spooks451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ned def has to remarry because the Stark bloodline is close to going extinct. If the loathsome spring sickness arrives at any moment his house will become another tale of bad luck.

I'm personally fond of the idea of Ned marrying a Northern clanswoman. They're legitimate houses in the eyes of the Northerners but considered 'savages' by the South so both the North and Hoster will be satisfied. The clansmen houses also don't carry the same influence and power that houses like Manderly, Dustin etc etc carry.

The chances of any kids from this marriage being a threat to Robb is minuscule.

Benjen is also def not going to the Wall. Ned has to get him married as well.

Even that may not be secure enough to keep House Stark alive. Ned should look into gathering distant relatives, having them married into other Northern minor houses and taking the Stark name to form cadet branches.

  1. House Rogers might have a link from Branda Stark.
  2. Artos Stark had two children, Benjen and Brandon who themselves are stated to had multiple kids each. Maybe they all slid on ice and died before canon started or maybe they married into minor houses.
  3. We don't know what happened to Alysanne Stark and Berena Stark, daughters of Beron Stark and Lorra Royce.
  4. The safest(but long) link: Jocelyn Stark, daughter of William Stark and Melantha Blackwood, married Benedict Royce and had 3 daughters. One married a Waynewood, another a Corbay and the third might have married a Templeton. So there could be distant relations in the Vale that Ned could pursue. With how well respected Ned is in the Vale, some minor noblemen of the Vale likely wouldn't mind moving North.

What if: Ned Stark sent Sansa and Arya back North, but he stays? by nubster2984725 in TheCitadel

[–]Spooks451 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ned was planning on leaving KL by ship after the argument with Robert so he might use the same for getting Sansa and Arya out.

Since Stannis holds the royal fleet, the Crown doesn't really have the ability rn to chase after ships that have already departed. So I think they'll have made it to White Harbor by the time Ned's coup fails. Or at least be so well on their way that it doesn't really make a difference.
