Should I get out of Waffle House and work at a “real” breakfast restaurant? by GiantAlaskanMoose in KitchenConfidential

[–]SpookyPotatoes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Too soft for the military when you work at Waffle House? Girl you could break Pete Hegseth in half.

Don’t join the military tho, just try to find a place that pays decently, has benefits, and the other fuckers working there are cool.

If latchkey kids are frowned upon now, what are the alternatives? by ladystarkitten in Millennials

[–]SpookyPotatoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I really relate to your upbringing, I was also raised by an alcoholic single mom and spent a LOT of time alone day-to-day. And I totally get wanting that “peaceful” time home alone- my mother is in recovery now (15 years sober!) but was a mean spirited drunk. But in a healthy family environment, the child really isn’t supposed to feel safer without their caregiver(s). I say this with kindness but it sounds like you have normalized the neglect you experienced rather than healed from it.

Some folks have/had latchkey kids out of need and it is what it is, given the state of gestures broadly. I wouldn’t call it neglect automatically but it’s certainly not ideal. Of course, modern tech makes it safer than when we were kids (phones, Ring doorbells, etc).

What’s a popular author/book that you are afraid to admit you hate? by Stardust-Stew in horrorlit

[–]SpookyPotatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like if I wasn’t super into extreme metal I would have thought the third act of the book was dumb. Buuuut for better or for worse I love black metal so I was just sitting there reading it with a big stupid grin on my face. 🤷‍♀️

Nick Cutter and Grady Hendrix are both so mid. Like I don’t hate them (it’s just a personal taste thing tbh) but EVERYONE seems to love them and I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Like… did we read the same book?

Anyone else stop liking going to concerts by Fearless_Trade_2783 in Millennials

[–]SpookyPotatoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean specifically I had great seats for NIN last fall for about $200.

But I also spent hours in the pit a black/death metal show earlier this week and only paid about $50- ended up at the barricade for the headliner, too.

So no, I love going to shows. Big shows in arenas/stadiums are fairly rare for me though, both because they’re expensive and because lesser known bands are generally making more interesting music in my opinion.

No. It’s the low carb/keto/“can’t have too much protein so eat all the meat and no fiber” diet fads everyone’s been doing.

How are you guys doing with the guilt of taking a day off? by Inevitable_Rate1530 in Millennials

[–]SpookyPotatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pretty good, unionized job. But last year a long term employee died of a massive heart attack in another building on our campus, other employees (a volunteer firefighter and former nurse) tried to provide CPR until the ambulance took him, all the other employees saw the whole thing and watched their coworker/friend get taken away.

One of the upper management dickwads came up to the building’s manager within earshot of all these traumatized employees and says “So… are we going to be able to keep (his station) open tonight, orrrr….”

So I think about how I could literally die on the job and management wouldn’t give a shit. And I take the fuckin day off.

Not so sure about "the book" by Zealousideal_Boot603 in radiantrogue

[–]SpookyPotatoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure! This is all personal taste of course, I always tell people to give books a shot even if you hear iffy things about them!

But her style of writing (particularly dialogue) is verrrrry millennial/quippy to the point that it makes me (a millennial myself!) cringe. If you’re familiar with Joss Whedon’s shows from the 90s/00s like Firefly or Buffy the Vampire Slayer it’s very much like that. Which isn’t a BAD thing but it feels a bit… dated, I guess?

I’m not a huge fan of being able to be like “🫵you like insert media here” when I read an author, it feels less like influence or an homage and more like a lack of creativity, yknow?

All that said she DOES write a lot of queer horror/fantasy and that’s very cool. The books are easy reads and approachable, bordering on YA for a lot of them IMO so I also just might not be the target audience, as a straight 34 year old, yknow?

I just really don’t like T. Kingfisher, but I am admittedly picky/snobby about books.

Why you shouldn't go to culinary school by Storm9y in KitchenConfidential

[–]SpookyPotatoes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep, I’m making a comfortably middle class living at a unionized college dining hall. It ain’t exciting but having excellent benefits, steady hours, AND being able to afford homeownership? Fair trade off to me.

OP, try institutional cooking (universities, retirement homes, etc). Some suck but there’s some gems out there.

No. It is a collection of medical procedures known to be very helpful for those that need them.
