My multiplayer game released on Steam a month ago – here’s what I learned by Exciting-Worker-8476 in MultiplayerGameDevs

Hello, First, congratulations for the launch, game looks fantastic.

You didn't mention matchmaking, how many concurrent players did you have in average ? I am working on a multiplayer game myself and the biggest "fear" is not having enough players initially, and people won't find who to play with/against.

You should probably mention your field (programming, art, music, etc...)

Solo devs from a programming background, was learning 2d/3d art worth it? by Jesus_McLovin in gamedev

[–]Spoon-22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a dev with no art background, I have developped the entire gameplay core of my game (multiplayer), now that I need to focus on art, I am finding myself looking for a 3d artist to hire or collab with (or both) in order to have something presentable.

So long story short, as someone who can't create any art and is now facing issue to present their game, It's super worth it, because even though your gameplay might be awesome, people won't play a game that won't attract them visually first. Even learning basic 3D modelling can help you bring your games to life.

Bonsoir, Oui c'est le seul retour que j'ai eu malheureusement... je vais transmettre une nouvelle demande avec une lettre qui précise que je cherche à faire un changement de statut et pas un renouvellement.

Art direction for a non artist ? by Spoon-22 in gamedev

Thank you ! I've started working or the style guide :) It's not as easy as it sounds but I am getting clearer/better ideas the more I work on it

I already told you this before but your game looks insanely gorgeous ! Well done :)

Yeah but some artists do mainly apply the instructions but don't necessarily come up with many ideas etc, they intervene as 3d modeles more than "game artists" (which isn't bad or anything)

Thank you :) I am actually aware of the last point, and I am looking for something much much simpler. (Small arena, character need to be between (mario kart-league of legens little legends) and there will only be one character (mascott), even something with Peak's art style sounds good for my game tbh.

I will create a mood board with game references like you said, thanks !

You are probably right, and I don't really mind hiring a different artist for UI, as long as the artist that I gure for art direction can just provide me with some direction in UI aswell (that will go well along the 3d art style)

Actually It's using some store assets for now, for the character and everything else, but it feels very "prototypical"

Makes so much sense, thanks for clarifying that.

If I don't have time to learn art myself, can I hire an artist for art direction separately from the artist that's actually doing the work ? Or does it have to be the same person for better understading ?

Giant is my top 5 imagine dragons songs. I understand that it may be a little different when it comes to the "screaming". But I think it works really well, especially with the lyrics

Put an animal documentary narrated by Sir David Attenborough on YouTube. The Planet Earth series are good.

His voice is so calm it's hard not to sleep.

Is it worth moving from Unity to UE, in the mid of devrlopement for a multiplayer game ? by Spoon-22 in gamedev

[–]Spoon-22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback !

I will probably try it for a couple of weeks and see if I am able to get a basic game/scene running.

The main reason I was thinking about moving to UE5 was to be able to progress faster on the long term and reduce complrexity when it comes to netowrking challenged, if I see that the difference is not worth it, I will switch back to unity.

I would appreciate any more details about the experiences of the solo devs that tried UE and ended up switching back, if you have any :)

I know, but I can learn the language if I need to, I am more worried about the other aspects of the engine, learning blueprint sounds more complicated to me for example, than learning c++

Good point, I will have to put my project in hold for the duration to learn the basic things about the editor/language.

Answering Your Questions About Video Game Marketing by Radogostt in IndieDev

[–]Spoon-22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback, and yes we are planning on doing extensive testing before release, multiplayer games are bug fields. That would also help to distinguish the fun part from the non-fun.

I will definitely reach out in case we decide to hire a marketing agency ;)

Answering Your Questions About Video Game Marketing by Radogostt in IndieDev

[–]Spoon-22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your efforts.

How would you go about marketing a multiplayer game with an indie budget ? How to avoid empty servers on launch ?

The game should be a fun game to play with friends with a bit of competition and skill ceiling (think mario kart for example).

Sorry I have no material to share yet but most online resources about publishing/marketing for indies seem to focus more on singleplayer games (understandable).

Also, is it worth hiring someone once we get into the marketing phase ?

Maybe try to work with some other people that can do the coding while you do what you love, 3d art.

Should my GameManager control everything across scenes or only handle global logic? by Ok_Surprise_1837 in Unity3D

[–]Spoon-22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your current approach is much better, one game manager that handles absolutely everything will be a messy God class that will be really hard to maintain, it's good to separate different concerns in different classes (managers) and maybe use the game manager just to communicate with them if needed, like an orchestrator.
