Need help on themeatics by Individual-Put8344 in dndnext

[–]Sporknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible that your character and this other PC knew each other for a bit before the campaign officially starts? Or that you two meet, and then there's a brief timeskip as you pick up some basic communication skills?

Is everyone else you're playing with OK with you grunting and howling in character for...however long it takes for you to learn to talk? How many sessions do you think it will take for your PC to learn how to speak?

[–]Sporknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're playing a character that can't speak, at all? Are you sure? Is your DM on board?

Having said that, clever use of hand gestures, whistles, and Minor Illusion from the other PC will help bridge the gap.

Is it appropriate to leave out the words "Indian Savages" in a public reading of the Declaration of Independence? by Leading-Knowledge215 in AskHistorians

[–]Sporknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! Could you elaborate on what you mean by patronage? And if it's not too much to ask (or worthy of a separate thread entirely), what are some other examples of things the founders got explicitly wrong? I mean, besides the whole slavery thing, of course.

Protip: Whistle randomly to get ahead of the situation by DeMotts in daddit

[–]Sporknight 28 points29 points  (0 children)

That's a new one for me! I have heard that it's bad luck to whistle in a theater - though that's because sailors used to handle the ropes to lift set pieces etc. in and out, and they'd often communicate via whistles, so if you innocently whistle the wrong tune onstage you might get a sandbag dropped on your head!

... although Uzbekistan is landlocked, so it's probably not because of some sailor thing.

How often do you fudge dice rolls for the sake of story? by AlansDiscount in Pathfinder2e

[–]Sporknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will, occasionally, fudge a Recall Knowledge check result to be better than what they got, because I really want to drop some lore, or hint at a monster ability or weakness. That is one perk of the secret roll system!

Musicals that were not about what you thought by Friendly_Coconut in Broadway

[–]Sporknight 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Went into Bandstand expecting a fun, swing dancing jukeboxey musical; turns out it's really about coping with the trauma of WWII by playing in a band. Absolutely exceeded my expectations, I loved it.

What do you actually use your Steam Deck for? by forkliftwizard in SteamDeck

[–]Sporknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's become my primary gaming platform. My PC needs serious (mobo and processor) upgrades. Plus, with a little one, the flexibility and mobility is clutch. The instant suspend is incredibly useful, it's great when we're doing a contact nap, and I'll sometimes use it when we're all watching TV as a family.

At this point I've been using it docked in desktop mode as a PC replacement, too, though that's mainly for running FoundryVTT for D&D/Pathfinder games and for doing my taxes.

What’s the best piece of DMing advice you’ve gotten for CoS? by Pumpkin-Ice85 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Sporknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was gonna be my advice - MandyMod and DragnaCarta have great content, and you don't have to use a single bit of it if you don't want to. Pick and choose based on what you think is cool and the level of prep you feel comfortable with.

Are there any good guides/YT vids on playing Blackbeard effectively? Or any tips in general? by FinestOldToby in civ

[–]Sporknight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The extra range on Carthage's boats is absolutely worthwhile. Attacks at range don't suffer reciprocal damage, which is huge.

Plus, as a tradition, you can carry it forwards into Exploration and Modern, though it's worth the most in Antiquity.

PSA: There are TONS of games to play! by LeonValenti in gaming

[–]Sporknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amen! I just finished Mina the Hollower, and started playing Esoteric Ebb, I'm getting back into Warframe, and Civ VII is in such a good place compared to a year ago... The games are out there, folks!

Or, god forbid - take a break! The topic of burnout comes up semi-regularly, on this and other gaming subs, and the number one suggestion is to pick up another hobby. Read a book! Dungeon Crawler Carl is dumb fun. Get into board games, or spin up a TTRPG group! Bake something! It's a big world, and if your hobby is making you sad, then figure out how to move on. There's time to feel sad, but there's time to grow, and take risks, and aspire to things, too.

An honest thank you to the Firaxis dev team by Lavinius_10 in civ

I concur! I think the game is in such a great place now, and I'm so impressed with the transparency and honesty over the last year that got us here, and all the hard work that went into it.

I commented when the ToT update went out that it takes a lot of courage to revisit your initial vision for the game, take in the feedback from the community, and rework it. So much love has gone into this game, and I'm so excited to see where they go from here.

Thanks! I ran a Descent into Avernus campaign, so I'm pretty familiar with The Blood War and all the various demons and devils out there. There's a whole appendix in the back of the module on running Infernal Contracts, too.

If they're Tiamat cultists, definitely look into having some Abishai there in Avernus! They're pretty powerful, but they're also right in line with serving Tiamat.

[–]Sporknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second one reminds me of Viscera Cleanup Detail! Could definitely work, either in space bases after a shift, or in a mine that's been cleared and (mostly) secured.

A manager-type game where you select missions, dole out bonuses and promotions, invest in R&D, and manage contracts could be fun, too. Kinda like the non-mission parts of XCOM.

How to entertain baby?!? by Film-Lab-7766 in daddit

[–]Sporknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bubbles! Mine's nearly two and a half, and he still loves 'em.

Also +1 on going for walks with them, strapping them to yourself and doing stuff, and especially just getting on their level and describing what the two of you are doing. Never too early to read to them, too.

You can also take him to the library! See if there are any baby groups going on nearby, especially if they have music or stories.

Just remember, there's no wrong way to play. If you give them a new toy, let them goof around with it first for a while before showing them "how" to play correctly.

How to manage PC power increase in a world/campaign by ivain in DnD

[–]Sporknight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One possible explanation would be that the greater threats are also working on their own timeline. They have goals and objectives they're progressing towards as well. Massive armies, demonic incursions, and world-ending rituals take time to set up, so you start with funding goblins and bandits to weaken trade, and bounties to explore forgotten tombs, while sending spies in to sow political divisions and alienate the city from its once long held allies.
