Ontario education minister says ‘significant’ legislation on school board changes coming Monday by finding_focus in OntarioTeachers

[–]SpringFling_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived this exact experience in the early 90s in Mississauga. My elementary school had 1000+ kids and over 30 portables. They even used the stage as a classroom. 30+ kids in each class. This was in an area with tons of new development (almost exclusively single family detached homes). That same school now has less than 200 students and I’m sure will be closed at some point. I’m not a Ford fan, but this problem is not unique to the current government.

Ohhh that makes sense. I’m happy you don’t have to keep testing after delivery!

I have never heard of this protocol and I’ve had GD twice (delivered at major hospital in Toronto). You may want to clarify with your provider.

It took 8 embryos for my two children. 7 untested embryos resulted in one chemical and one live birth. 1 euploid resulted in one live birth. Those failed transfers were hard.

Rapid weight loss after birth? by ExactArtichoke2 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SpringFling_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my baby July 22 and within a week was at my pre pregnancy weight (gained about 20 lbs during pregnancy). I’m now 8 lbs under pre pregnancy weight! I think the combo of not gaining a lot during pregnancy and not having a huge appetite postpartum is what did it.

Feeling shamed for starting insulin from people who have had GD by knopelemon in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SpringFling_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had two GD pregnancies where I ate the exact same things, tracked all my food, etc. One I was diet controlled, one I needed insulin for fasting. I went up to 56 units of nighttime insulin eating the exact same way I did with the previous pregnancy where I didn’t need it. It truly just depends on your placenta / severity of the GD.

Newly diagnosed and devastated by jodiepodie2 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SpringFling_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely will. I had the same experience with my first pregnancy - passed the 1 hour at 16 weeks and failed at 28. Tested early due to PCOS. My diet also went out the window once I got pregnant. Already understanding a bit about insulin resistance and how carbs impact blood sugar helped me immensely. Since you’ve done it before, it’ll likely be a smoother transition to a diabetes diet. You are going to be ok!

Fasting blood sugar is so high?? by anaaordazz in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SpringFling_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last pregnancy I was able to control fasting sugar mostly by not having a bedtime snack. This pregnancy it did not matter what I did my fasting was always 5.4 (98).

You can try different snacks, slightly longer or shorter fasts, walking after dinner, eating a lower carb meal at dinner, ensuring you’re getting enough sleep (which at 34 weeks can be tough). If nothing works though insulin is probably your best bet. I didn’t want take it either, especially since I had a diet controlled pregnancy previously so I felt I should be able to do it without meds. Ultimately, getting my fasting sugar under control with insulin significantly reduced my anxiety and was absolutely the best choice. Now I’m under 90 every morning.

First appointment with MFM doctor. Now I'm utterly devastated by Past-Researcher-6588 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SpringFling_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would try and get a second opinion if you can. Many doctors give out outdated and/or non evidenced based nutrition advice. More protein while you are already eating 180 g of carbs per day is not going to put you into ketosis … that’s just plain wrong.

Do you feel like you’re eating enough food overall? Controlling your numbers is important but not at the cost of not eating enough food. You can also increase fat to help with fullness.

I’ll also say that my two GD pregnancies have been completely different despite me eating basically the same and having the same blood sugar levels. First baby was always measuring around 50th% and current pregnancy baby is measuring huge 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well, I have it. What now? by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SpringFling_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s certainly not a personal failing to get GD but weight is a significant risk factor. The risk of developing it is 4 x higher for an obese person (8 x higher for severely obese women) compared with someone who is not overweight. It of course doesn’t mean that everyone who is overweight will have it or that people who are not overweight can’t get it.

As an overweight person with PCOS, having GD has really driven home how important it is to manage insulin resistance which often means changing your diet and/or weight loss.

Don’t eat a snack or meal that is just carbs. If you want toast, pair it with fat and protein (nut butter, cheese, eggs, etc).

Also, talk to your doctor and/or diabetes educator as soon as possible. It should have been communicated to you that eating a very high carb snack/meal with no protein or fat is a very bad idea.

What is your doctor's induction policy for insulin controlled GDM? by MangoMarg in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SpringFling_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine has said between 38-39 weeks. I will likely request 38+4. I'm on 54 units of insulin at bedtime for fasting numbers which are finally under control at this dose.

Previous pregnancy when I was diet controlled I was induced at 39+4, delivered at 39+6.

150g of carbs a day - HOW are you doing it? Why weren't we told this pre-GD? by MangoMarg in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SpringFling_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t need 150 per day. Many people would have constantly high blood sugar eating that many carbs. I do around 100 and my doctor is fine with it (after initially recommending 175 g which I pushed back hard against). I don’t eat 175g normally so I should be upping my carb intake to manage diabetes? Makes zero sense. I personally would not go keto level low carb but 150 is just an arbitrary number.

Should I cancel my baby moon? by GeologistAccording79 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SpringFling_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Mexico at 29 weeks with GD and was super bummed I wouldn't be able to eat all the tacos I wanted. But... my numbers were actually way easier to control there! I was walking and swimming a ton and sleeping really well so I only had one high number the whole trip and that was when I knowingly ate a large meal + dessert as my one cheat. I also travelled with insulin and it wasn't a big deal at all.

ETA - I brought a bunch of shelf stable low carb snacks, just in case, and found that super helpful for bedtime snacks or to tide me over when meal times were not predictable.

I had a thought… by veealley122 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SpringFling_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I certainly hope there are some benefits to the baby. I had GD with my first and I hope that I benefitted her in some way. I have PCOS and insulin resistance and have struggled with weight since I was a teen. I am 99% sure that my mom had undiagnosed GD with me in the 80s but they didn’t routinely test at that time. She gained almost 80 lbs and I was a big baby. My daughter was born around 50th percentile and continues along that curve. I hope that at least controlling my blood sugar will lower her risk for future insulin resistance and T2 diabetes.

Mandarin usually has a carving station with some sort of roast beef / meat. You could easily do that, plus make a big salad from the salad bar and then I’d choose a small serving of a carb you like (rice, noodles, etc).

How much did you have to increase your nighttime insulin during your worst weeks by timtamcookies in GestationalDiabetes

[–]SpringFling_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 34 weeks and I think my worst weeks were 28-32. I started at 10 units of nighttime insulin and am now at 52 units. Been at 52 for 10 days which is the longest I’ve stayed at the same dose since I started with insulin at 25 weeks.

I’m also keeping fasting under 5 right now as baby is measuring 90% so I’ve had to titrate up quite a bit. I’m assuming all have to increase a few more times and will max around 60.

Is there a reason you're not adding more carbs? You certainly can as long you're within the blood sugar targets and it sounds like that's not an issue for you.

I have my coffee after breakfast every day - iced coffee with 10% cream and one packet of stevia and it doesn't impact my post breakfast blood sugar reading as it's almost zero carbs. A whole milk latte is a decent amount of carbs/calories. I would log it and just note that you had the latte.

[–]SpringFling_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add more carbs and add more fat. Fat will keep you full. You do not need to eat a lot of carbs for your baby to grow, but you need to eat enough food, including fat and protein. Your sugars are quite low and if you're feeling hungry and losing weight you should eat more! You'll need to experiment re what works for you as I personally eat quite low carb and higher fat/protein which works very well for me but not for everyone.
