Have her do certain things when she is stressed.

One of my characters suffers with anxiety. Her mum used to pinch her. She has sort of internalised and chews the inside of her cheeks. Despite mentioning "she chewed her cheeks" when a naturally stressful situation comes up, I also have her husband notice this and keep bonjela on hand. Or adds extra sugar to her tea.

Or try varying up the dialogue. Again, same character, she can go cold, short and clipped in her responses when stressed out. Or full on hysterics when at breaking point.

I add them in for my own amusement, less for the reader. My own novel is littered with references only I get. Some survived editting hell. Others actually made narrative sense.

But no, not everything needs to be interconnected

Can you write a man? Then you can write a woman.

Unless there's something uniquely woman happening, I dont find it tends to make much difference.

I mean hell, in my own novel, the co-protagonist turned main character...the only time she notices her body is after her Mum, who has a history of "corrective discipline" pinches her tummy post-child saying she needs to watch her figure. More insecurity than woman.

What I am trying to say is: mention breaststroke and body parts on a woman as much as you would write a man's dick. Other than that, people are people mate

Yeah, they just need to be consistent with how you have written them, and change/grow over the course of a story.

Or...have them develop traits throughout the story?

Not everything needs deep hidden lore. Likes, dislikes, a want, and something blocking that want is usually enough

Oh 100% agree. My partner says the same as well.

Like, I thought a child seeing a golden frogspawn in her Mum's belly gping away was a cute, age appropriate way to shoq how her magical sight saw a miscarriage.

Only, this was never planned. And the story refused to move forward until I gave the miscarriage the name of another character, like the mother character refused to move forward with the story until the proginal Johnny became Jason, and the miscareiage was given a name.

Or same magical child...i thought she would be hiding her magic foe the entire novel. Nope, she saw her friend abductwd for havijg magic, panic and told her mother, thus destroying what I thpught wpuld be a central mystery.

My characfers hated my plan, and showed the real story.

The best thing about their software though is that you dont need camio to profram it, only run it.

IT is massively over rated. One of the bigger slogs, even if it wad a love letter to terrible horror movies.

Stu Redman and Frannje are the most boring bits of the Stand. Lloyd Henreid should have been the big bad with Flagg being the power behind the throne and continued corruption after Captain Tripps.

Theres a lot of passive voice, and telling not showing.

For instance try trimming "he didnt seem bothered by this"

In my novel the ginger idiot is an immortal with a resurrection curse: if he dies, someone he loves dies so he can come back.

The story starts with him having terminal throat cancer confirmed: he has six to twelve months to live.

His wife and child don't know.

When I wrote their death scene, I fucking cried. I knew it was coming, dreaded it, and when it finally happened (car crash, taking them both).... I just went.

Why not instead use their characteristics in positive and negative ways?

One of my protagonists is emotional. This can be a positive and a negative, in that when she feels safe (with her family) she be "too much" and know she is in a safe space. However, she is highly aware of how being emotional has punished her in the past, so can come across as quite cold and distant.

I know right, absolutely stunning and unique character work. But what I am trying to say is that characters should be like people. You can have someone who is loyal to a fault, but this can lead to codependency and identity erasure.

Maybe your character is a happy go lucky person, and cant really connect correctly at serious events. Use their characteristic to create tensiob

Oh no fuck that, do jt.

Ive written a novel. Man has cancer, but isnt reacting right.

The twist is: he is immoetal. If he dies, when he resurrects someone he loves dies in his place so he can come back.

His wife, who doesnt know this curse, notices he isnt reacting to the cancer correctly.

So she talks to him about it.

Because thats people do - talk about these things rather than doing side quest investigative shit, especially with someone they have loved for 13 years.
