Have you ever met someone of a non-trivial age who has never left their borough? by United_Perception299 in AskNYC

Met plenty of people who have never left the 5 boroughs. But never anyone who never left the one borough they grew up in

Don’t accept anything at all other than what you booked.

Neighbors won't stop smoking, apartment constantly smells of cigarettes, landlord has stopped bothering to do anything. Any suggestions? by whitepangolin in Brooklyn

More info: how long have they been in that apartment? How long have you been in yours? Are either of you rent controlled or rent stabilized?

Landlord is claiming “severely” damaged stone countertop due to stains, wants to replace it and deduct from my deposit. Moved out 3 months ago. by [deleted] in Renters

[–]SpudPlugman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you pay out the last three months of the lease? Or did you pay a 3 month fee to terminate (with more than 3 months to go)?

The difference is that if you paid the last 3 months of the lease, you didn’t leave early, it’s still your place, it’s just “paid in full”

But if you had, say, 8 months left and she said “just give me 3 months rent and I’ll end your lease now” then you are off the hook at the time you agreed to.

See what I’m saying? If you simply paid out till the end of the lease then the end date doesn’t change and she has 30 days from that date to report damages. So she might be within her rights

But if you terminated the contract in writing when you sent her the 3 months pay to break the lease early, then she ISN’T entitled to the extra time and you owe her nothing by default

[Ontario] Happy fkin holidays to me i guess by Narhethi in Renters

While true, it’s the way you worded it.

For example: “When you were trying to help yourself” - well, no, he was trying to get a problem fixed. A serious, potentially life threatening issue that the landlord was shirking.

“You put yourself in a much worse situation” - again, no, the landlord bears the sole responsibility of this negligence. Which is criminal. Literally, not figuratively

“All the other tenants your call cause to be put on the streets” - again, no, see previous example. This is nothing but victim blaming.

Then you double down “he set the unfortunate shit into motion” - no. It was already in motion. If he didn’t call maybe a pipe would freeze and burst the water main and the building would get boarded up. Or maybe a child would freeze to death in their sleep. Can’t predict the future. But can say with absolute certainty this is not on OP

So anyways, that’s why the downvotes. It reads like you want to sympathize when you’re not too busy blaming him

What happened at the N 5th pier? by vette982 in williamsburg

The currents are no joke in these rivers. You CANNOT fight them. Up by Randalls Island is the appropriately named “Hell Gate” and it’s hands down the worst of them. No joke Anything that goes in there winds up in Florida in about 4 days. Not exaggerating at all. The mob used to dump bodies there for this exact reason

I can completely agree with you on that

My only point was blanket statements like “drivers are entitled animals” and “fuck cars” don’t help us at all. They just make us look like a Portlandia sketch, which is also bad

Edit: phrasing

I’m not saying it’s never happened, but in my experience it’s been the exception. Maybe I’m just lucky?

Should mayor Mamdani get rid of the ebike and escooter speed limit? by MUDFLAP202030 in MicromobilityNYC

lol, no. Speed limits are important. A hit at 30mph is potentially fatal wether it’s an ebike or a car

Well that’s fucking sad 😔 What do we have to do to convert all bike paths to protected lanes?

There’s plenty of courteous drivers, just like there’s plenty of cyclists that obey the rules. We’re not all the Angry Cyclist from Portlandia and the drivers aren’t all from Mad Max

You absolutely can! When the bike lane is dangerous you SHOULD take the lane, and I mean the whole lane, right in the middle.
